The Annals of otology, rhinology, and laryngology2003eng
In order to differentiate the features of dysphagia that occur after supraglottic horizontal laryngectomy from those that occur during neurologic diseases, we divided 38 subjects into 3 groups and submitted them to oropharyngoesophageal scintigraphy. Group 1 (control group) included 15 healthy volunteeers; group 2 comprised 8 patients who had residual dysphagia at least 1 year after supraglottic laryngectomy; and group 3 included 15 patients with various neurologic and neuromuscular disorders. In group 1, the mean values (+/- 2 SD) of selected semiquantitative parameters were consistent with t

BACKGROUND: Hyperkinetic dysarthria is characterized by abnormal involuntary movements affecting respiratory, phonatory, and articulatory structures impacting speech and deglutition. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play an important role in the evaluation and management of dysarthria and dysphagia. This review describes the standard clinical evaluation and treatment approaches by SLPs for addressing impaired speech and deglutition in specific hyperkinetic dysarthria populations.
METHODS: A literature review was conducted using the data sources of PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Schol

Botulinum toxin is known as a relatively safe and efficacious agent for the treatment of various neurologic and ophthalmologic disorders. Since dysphagia and deglutition problems combined with aspiration are often caused by spasticity, hypertonus, or delayed relaxation of the upper esophageal sphincter (UES), conventional treatment including lateral cricopharyngotomy was replaced by localized injections of botulinum toxin into the cricopharyngeal muscle (CM) in a series of 7 patients. The study comprised patients with slight dysphagia caused by isolated hypertonus of the UES, as well as patien

The otolaryngologist has a multifaceted role on the craniofacial anomalies team. The diagnosis and treatment of hearing disorders, both congenital and acquired; maintenance of communication through adequate speech and hearing; management of the airway and deglutition; and reconstructive surgery of the head and neck are the primary responsibilities to children and adults with craniofacial anomalies. The complete evaluation and treatment of these disorders can be both very challenging and very rewarding.

Disorders of the palatal uvula is one of the least highlighted areas of medical literature, inspite the fact that uvula is a key organ in functions like speech, deglutition and mastication. The aim of this paper is to present a series of cases of wide range of uvular deformities ranging from bifid uvula to absence of uvula.

So-called "primary" or "infantile" forms of deglutition, also termed lingual dyspraxia, are treated in different ways by orthodontists using various appliances to correct the condition and are also managed by speech-therapists and physiotherapists. The results obtained are often unstable. We have developed a more holistic approach to this disorder by attempting to grasp the underlying mechanisms in order to achieve more satisfactory correction. By establishing normal salivary deglutition more rapidly, this manual osteopathic technique complements the methods which use voluntary rehabilitation

Earlier studies have shown that the cross-sectional area of the deglutitive upper esophageal sphincter (UES) opening in healthy asymptomatic elderly individuals is reduced compared with healthy young volunteers. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a head-raising exercise on swallow-induced UES opening and hypopharyngeal intrabolus pressure in the elderly. We studied a total of 31 asymptomatic healthy elderly subjects by videofluoroscopy and manometry before and after real (19 subjects) and sham (12 subjects) exercises. A significant increase was found in the magnitude of the a

Parkinson's disease (PD) patients show a high prevalence of swallowing disorders and tracheal aspiration of food. The videofluoroscopic study of swallowing (VFSS) allows clinicians to visualize the visuoperceptual and temporal parameters associated with swallowing disorders in an attempt to predict aspiration risk. However, this subject remains understudied in PD populations. Our aim was to identify the predictors of penetration-aspiration in PD patients using the VFSS. Consecutive patients were evaluated using VFSS with different consistencies and volumes of food. A speech-language pathologis

The physiology of swallowing has been extensively investigated by a number of researchers with the use of various techniques. These studies contributed greatly to our understanding of human deglutition. However, in order to provide better treatment to the patients with swallowing disorders, certain areas of swallowing need further research and/or objective measures to quantify data. This article discusses the controllable aspects of the swallowing evaluation, including the materials to be given to the patients and the measures useful in diagnosis and treatment of swallowing disorders.

Moebius syndrome is a congenital, nonprogressive disorder clinically characterized by loss of facial expression, impaired stomatognathic system functions, incapacity to close the eyelids, and several oral impairments. The purpose of this paper was to present the clinical manifestations and the dental treatment in a 5-year, 2-month-old male Moebius syndrome patient. The child presented with facial asymmetry, difficulty performing facial mimic movements and pronouncing some letters, and compromised suction, mastication, breathing, and deglutition. An intraoral examination revealed hypofunction o

Functional evaluation of swallowing disorders requires rapid imaging modalities. Videofluorography and cinematography are the gold standard, but they have their limitations: no transverse plane imaging is achieved and structural resolution for exact topographic analysis is limited. Three cases preselected by videofluorography were studied to evaluate whether electron beam tomography (EBT) permits more detailed dynamic imaging of swallowing disorders focusing on the mesonasopharyngeal segment, the hypopharynx and the upper esophageal sphincter (UES). Immediately after videofluorographic examina

We report seemingly unique craniofacial malformations and deglutition dysfunction in a sib pair. The boy had right maxillomandibular alveolar synechae, ankylosis of right temporomandibular joint, hypoplasia of the zygomatico-maxillary region, nasal deviation to the left, choanal stenosis, and exophthalmos due to shallow orbita. His ears were apparently low-set with prominent lobules. He had severe gastroesophageal reflux and increasing respiratory problems and died at age 11 months. Psychomotor development was normal. His 10-year-old sister had similar craniofacial malformations and a cleft so

In the light of the literature the authors discuss the case of a 66 year-old hypertensive patient presenting headaches, disorders of gait and deglutition, dysphonia and urinary incontinence. A CAT scan showed dilatation of the entire ventricular system. Anatomo- pathological investigation showed a voluminous bisaccular aneurysmal malformation in the basilar artery. By deforming the pons and the medulla oblongata, the aneurysm had compressed the fourth ventricle and cerebral aqueduct, thus causing hydrocephalus. (Acta neurol. belg., 1980, 80, 80-85).

Disorder of deglutition is one of the severest signs in postoperative or posttraumatic paresis of the caudal cranial nerves. The main problem in these cases is aspiration. It is a serious disorder with potentially life-threatening pulmonary sequelae. In cases with unilateral paresis of the vagus and glossopharyngeal nerve we can consider the problem of surgical rehabilitation of swallowing as to be solved very well, as described in the present paper. However, in cases with bilateral vagus paresis we are faced with many more problems especially in the high-grade aspiration syndrome. The surgica
