Auditory brain oscillatory responses in drug-naïve patients with Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder affecting the function of dopaminergic cells in basal ganglia. Besides the motor symptoms, tremor, and dysfunction of sensory systems. In the literature, there was limited studies which investigates the basic sensorial processing in PD. Therefore, we aimed to establish the sensorial processing of simple auditory stimulations in naïve PD comparing to healthy controls (HC) via delta, theta, and alpha brain oscillatory responses. 12 naïve PD and 12 HC participated to the study. Brain responses recorded via the 64-channel electroencep

Quantified EEG in different G situations.

The electrical activity of the brain (EEG) has been recorded during parabolic flights in trained astronauts and non trained volunteers as well. The Fast Fourier analysis of the EEG activity evidenced more asymmetry between the two brain hemispheres in the subjects who suffered from motion sickness than in the others. However, such a FFT classification does not lead to a discrimination between deterministic and stochastic events. Therefore, a first attempt was made to calculate the dimensionality of "chaotic attractors" in the EEG patterns as a function of the different g-epochs of one parabola

[Electroencephalographic characteristics of cerebral atherosclerosis in patients of different ages].

On the basis of clinical and EEG studies of 500 patients from the age of 45-105 with diffuse cerebral atherosclerosis the author comes to the following conclusion. With an intensification of atherosclerosis there is an increase of alpha-rhythm disorganization, a slowing down of the frequency, a drop in the amplitude and index of alpha-rhythms, a decrease in the electrical brain reactivity with an increase of delta-and theta-waves. It is shown that the EEG changes are to a greater extent determined by the severity of cerebral atherosclerosis than by age factors. Normal variants of the EEG in pa

Inappropriate defibrillator discharge despite evident atrial flutter on stored device electrogram having significant RR variability - What is the mechanism?

It is crucial to analyze device stored electrograms (EGMs) to decipher whether the therapies were appropriate or inappropriate. We report a case of an inappropriate defibrillator therapy delivered during an obvious atrial tachyarrhythmia despite the dual chamber SVT discriminators being appropriately programmed for underlying rhythm abnormality. The therapy was delivered even though the tachycardia clearly satisfied V < A rate branch along with significant RR interval variability. The morphology match was misleading possibly due to malalignment of the peaks. On the other hand, the Abbott algor

Cortical tracking of natural speech by children with developmental language disorder (DLD): An EEG speech decoding investigation.

The sensory/neural Temporal Sampling (TS) theory of developmental language disorder (DLD) is based on the sensory and linguistic impairments in rhythm processing that are found in children with both developmental dyslexia (DD) and DLD. These sensory/linguistic impairments include decreased sensitivity to amplitude rise times (ARTs, the sensory triggers related to automatic cortical speech tracking), syllable stress patterns and speech rhythm. At the neural level TS theory predicts impairments in the cortical tracking of different rates of amplitude modulation (AM) in the speech signal <10 Hz.

Reduced fronto-cortical brain connectivity during NREM sleep in Asperger syndrome: an EEG spectral and phase coherence study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether sleep macrostructure and EEG power spectral density and coherence during NREM sleep are different in Asperger syndrome (AS) compared to typically developing children and adolescents. METHODS: Standard all night EEG sleep parameters were obtained from 18 un-medicated subjects with AS and 14 controls (age range: 7.5-21.5years) after one adaptation night. Spectral, and phase coherence measures were computed for multiple frequency bands during NREM sleep. RESULTS: Sleep latency and wake after sleep onset were increased in AS. Cross-frequency coupling between slow harmonics via the real brainstem oscillators: An in vivo animal study.

Brain waves of discrete rhythms (gamma to delta frequency ranges) are ubiquitously recorded and interpreted with respect to probable corresponding specific functions. The most challenging idea of interpreting varied frequencies of brain waves has been postulated as a communication mechanism in which different neuronal assemblies use specific ranges of frequencies cooperatively. One promising candidate is cross-frequency coupling (CFC), in which some neuronal assemblies efficiently utilize the fastest gamma range brain waves as an information carrier (phase-amplitude CFC); however, phase-phase

Regional differences of the temporal EEG dynamics during the first 30 min of human sleep.

The analysis of the time-course of different EEG bands during the first sleep cycle has up to now taken into account mostly central derivations. In the present study, we assessed the topographical differences of the time-course of different EEG bands during the first 30 min of sleep, by analysing the EEG power from four different scalp locations along the antero-posterior axis. Correlation of EEG bands time courses within and between each derivation has also been evaluated. Delta-theta (1-6.75 Hz) and alpha (7-10.75 Hz) activities exhibited an antero-posterior gradient with maximal power on th

Quantitative electroencephalographic profile of 3-(4-hydroxy-1-piperidinyl)-6-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-pyridazine (SR 41378) in the rat.

Quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) analysis was performed in rats following the oral administration of SR 41378 [3-(4-hydroxy-1-piperidinyl)-6-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-pyridazine], a novel aminopyridazine derivative, which has been shown to possess anticonvulsant, antianxiety and hypnotic activities in mice and rats. The EEG effects of SR 41378 (10, 30 and 100 mg/kg) were compared to those of secobarbital (30 and 60 mg/kg) and diazepam (1, 3 and 10 mg/kg). SR 41378 and secobarbital increased the power of the middle-frequencies (8-16 Hz) of the EEG, reduced that of 4-8 Hz (theta) activitie

Antiretroviral therapy affects the z-score index of deviant cortical EEG rhythms in naïve HIV individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Here we tested the effect of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) on deviant electroencephalographic (EEG) source activity in treatment-naïve HIV individuals. METHODS: Resting state eyes-closed EEG data were recorded before and after 5 months of cART in 48 male HIV subjects, who were naïve at the study start. The EEG data were also recorded in 59 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects as a control group. Frequency bands of interest included delta, theta, alpha1, alpha2 and alpha3, based on alpha frequency peak specific to each individual. They also included beta1 (13-20 Hz) and be

Diurnal variations of EEG power in healthy adults.

EEG power variations were evaluated in 9 healthy young adults from 8.45 a.m. to 9 p.m. and at 7 a.m. the next day. EEG signals were obtained from 16 electrodes in closed eyes and open eyes situations. Diurnal power variations were calculated for each frequency component, according to the recording situation (RS) and to the scalp site. Regarding values in the early morning on the first day, the power of almost all the frequency components showed an important diurnal increase. It came back close to initial values at 7 a.m. on the second day, which is in agreement with the existence of EEG circad

Comparison of power spectra from overnight electroencephalography between patients with Down syndrome and matched control subjects.

Electroencephalograms can capture brain oscillatory activities during sleep as a form of electrophysiological signals. We analysed electroencephalogram recordings from full-night in-laboratory polysomnography from 100 patients with Down syndrome, and 100 age- and sex-matched controls. The ages of patients with Down syndrome spanned 1 month to 31 years (median 4.4 years); 84 were younger than 12 years, and 54 were male. From each electroencephalogram, we extracted relative power in six frequency bands or rhythms (delta, theta, alpha, slow sigma, fast sigma, and beta) from six channels (frontal

Antegrade and retrograde decremental conduction properties of an accessory pathway associated with the coronary sinus musculature.

A 32-year-old man underwent catheter ablation of an orthodromic atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia. The sinus rhythm electrocardiogram exhibited a normal PQ interval and no delta waves, but atrial pacing produced a prolonged PQ interval and wide QRS morphology with right bundle-branch block due to antegrade accessory pathway (AP) conduction. During the tachycardia, atrial double potentials consisting of the coronary sinus musculature (CSM) and left atrial (LA) potentials were observed. Ventricular extrastimulation exhibited retrograde decremental conduction with an identical atrial activat

[The electroencephalographic correlates of a disorder in higher cortical functions in local lesions of the hypothalamic area].

In order to reveal correlations between disturbances in higher cortical functions and characteristics of electrical activity 70 patients with pathological foci in the hypothalamic regions were examined using computer data processing. Destruction of the normal intercentral relations between EEG rhythms develops under the influence of the hypothalamic focus. The process builds up with the aggravation of cortical disorders (mnestic, emotional-affective, consciousness oppression with sleep inversion). General decrease of EEG coherence is observed with the highest destruction of correlations in the

Electroencephalography Changes During Cybersickness: Focusing on Delta and Alpha Waves.

Virtual reality (VR) is an immersive technology capable of simulating alternate realities, however, it often leads to cybersickness, causing discomfort for users. We conducted an experiment using a group of 30 participants (aged 25 ± 2.1 years) to see the alpha and delta wave changes for three conditions: Blank, Video, and Video Pause, with electroencephalography (EEG) recordings. The experiments were repeated three times (Trial 1, Trial 2, and Trial 3). The results showed a significant increase in delta wave power for Video compared with the Blank (p < 0.05). Video Pause showed a significant

Nucleus Reuniens-Elicited Delta Oscillations Disable the Prefrontal Cortex in Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a severe mental disorder associated with an array of symptoms characterized as positive, negative and cognitive dysfunctions. While SZ is a multifaceted disorder affecting several regions of the brain, altered thalamocortical systems have emerged as a leading contributor to SZ. Specifically, it has been shown that: (1) the thalamus is functionally disconnected from the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in SZ; (2) neural activity and blood flow to the PFC are greatly diminished in SZ (hypofrontality); and (3) delta oscillations are abnormally present in the PFC during the waking sta

Atypical EEG pattern in children with absence seizures.

We studied four children with diagnosis of absence seizures (generalized primary epilepsy), and with a generalized delta activity on the EEG during clinical attacks provoked by hyperventilation. The lack of ictal generalized spike-and-wave discharges with a frequency of 3 Hz in our patients, makes this an atypical pattern. All children had complete control of their seizures and disappearance of the EEG changes with valproate. We concluded that generalized delta activity observed on EEG during the hyperventilation in children should not always be considered as a normal finding for age, since it

The Role of Low-frequency Neural Oscillations in Speech Processing: Revisiting Delta Entrainment.

Studies that use measures of cerebro-acoustic coherence have shown that theta oscillations (3-10 Hz) entrain to syllable-size modulations in the energy envelope of speech. This entrainment creates sensory windows in processing acoustic cues. Recent reports submit that delta oscillations (<3 Hz) can be entrained by nonsensory content units like phrases and serve to process meaning-though such views face fundamental problems. Other studies suggest that delta underlies a sensory chunking linked to the processing of sequential attributes of speech sounds. This chunking associated with the "focus o

Phase coupling of a circadian neuropeptide with rest/activity rhythms detected using a membrane-tethered spider toxin.

Drosophila clock neurons are self-sustaining cellular oscillators that rely on negative transcriptional feedback to keep circadian time. Proper regulation of organismal rhythms of physiology and behavior requires coordination of the oscillations of individual clock neurons within the circadian control network. Over the last decade, it has become clear that a key mechanism for intercellular communication in the circadian network is signaling between a subset of clock neurons that secrete the neuropeptide pigment dispersing factor (PDF) and clock neurons that possess its G protein-coupled recept
