Muscle atrophy as a consequence of rotator cuff tears: should we compare the muscles of the rotator cuff with those of the deltoid?

PURPOSE: The quantitative assessment of muscle atrophy has a degree of importance in prognosticating rotator cuff treatment. However, it has been conjectured that muscle fat increases with aging. Therefore, we thought that the quantitative assessment of the supraspinatous would be better if made in comparison with a standard of reference such as the deltoid. Consequently, we performed a two-part study, first evaluating supraspinatous changes compared with the deltoid in "normals" with aging, and second, determining if in patients with cuff tears the supraspinatous fat exceeds that of the delto

Latissimus dorsi muscle transfer for reconstruction of traumatic deltoid deficiency: a report of two cases.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Traumatic deltoid muscle deficiency results in significant impairment of shoulder function despite preserved distal upper-limb mobility. The pedicled latissimus dorsi muscle transfer (LDT) is a promising reconstructive option; however, its application in traumatic deltoid loss remains underreported, particularly in resource-limited and conflict-affected settings. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of traumatic deltoid deficiency managed with pedicled LDT. Case 1 involved a 23-year-old male with deltoid and supraspinatus avulsion following a projectile injury.

A case of sub-acute compartment syndrome of bilateral pectoralis major, deltoid and triceps muscles.

A 19-year-old healthy bodybuilder presented to the emergency department with gradually worsening pain in both his upper arms and shoulders and inability to fully flex his elbows. The haematological investigations revealed a markedly raised Creatinine Kinase (74,400 U/L) and myoglobinuria. The patient required an emergency surgical decompression of the pectoral and the anterior and posterior compartments of arms of both upper limbs with secondary closure after 48 h. The patient had an uneventful post-op and recovery of his functions with some initial restriction of full flexion of his left elbo

[Pediculated deltoid muscle flap: an alternative for coverage of chronic radionecrotic lesions in the shoulder region].

Soft tissue lesions in the clavicular region may be the result of trauma, infections or oncological resection and necessitate plastic surgery coverage. A case of an 85-year-old woman is presented with non-union of the mid-portion of the left clavicle with an overlying skin defect and a brachial plexus lesion after radiation therapy for breast cancer. The left arm was functionless so after partial resection of the medial part of the clavicle coverage of the defect was conducted by a proximally pediculated anterior part of the deltoid muscle with a split thickness skin graft.

Quantitative evaluation of the posterior deltoid to triceps tendon transfer based on muscle architectural properties.

The architectural properties of the posterior deltoid muscle and the 3 heads of the triceps were measured using microdissection techniques to determine whether substitution of triceps function by the posterior deltoid is architecturally appropriate. Muscles from 10 fresh cadaver specimens were fixed by high-pressure perfusion using buffered formaldehyde. Muscle architectural properties, including pennation angle, fiber bundle length, sarcomere length, and physiologic cross-sectional area, were determined. Fiber bundle length varied significantly among the deltoid (123.1 +/- 7.8 mm), medial (64

[The anterolateral deltoid muscle flap-plasty: the procedure of choice in large rotator cuff defects].

We analysed the results of shoulder reconstruction using an anterolateral deltoid muscle flap plasty in 101 patients with large rotator cuff lesions. This method was first described in Apoil and Augereau in 1985. We modified and extended their technique. Regular follow-up examinations were possible in 100 patients (27 females, 73 males, age 61.3 +/- 8.7 years). One patient died of sepsis of unknown aetiology during the hospital stay. All patients suffered from severe pain and sleepless nights prior to the operation. They also had long histories of unsuccessful and frustrating treatment. The ro

Bilateral Myositis Ossificans of the Deltoid Muscle Secondary to the COVID-19 Vaccine: A Case Report.

Shoulder injuries related to COVID-19 vaccines presented in the literature include many forms that occurred either early in the first days after injection or late, after weeks or months, but not all have convincingly demonstrated a cause-and-effect relationship. We present and illustrate a unique case to our knowledge of late-onset bilateral myositis ossificans of the deltoid muscles and spontaneous stabilization of evolution, without functional impairment of the shoulders, after the correct administration of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 mRNA vaccine. This case highlights the possibility of di

Idiopathic myositis ossificans of the deltoid muscle: A case report with unique presentation and MRI findings.

INTRODUCTION: Myositis ossificans of the deltoid muscle is extremely rare. We present a case with unique presentation and MRI findings. CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old female presented with a 3-month history of a swelling in lateral aspect of the right arm. There was no history of trauma, injection, or surgery to the area. Examination showed a 3 × 3 cm firm mass in the deltoid muscle. MRI findings were suggestive of myxoma. Surgical excision was done and histopathology showed the classic features of myositis ossificans. There was no recurrence at the final follow-up 7 months later. DISCUSSION: My

Degenerative changes of the deltoid muscle have impact on clinical outcome after reversed total shoulder arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Despite a high complication rate, subjective and objective results of reversed shoulder arthroplasty for severe rotator cuff lesions associated with osteoarthritis, fracture sequelae, or revision of hemiarthroplasty are favorable. However, whether the changes in biomechanics of the joint may lead to structural changes in the remaining rotator cuff and the deltoid muscle, and may thereby alter the clinical result, has rarely been described. This study investigates the context between postoperative fatty infiltration of the remaining rotator cuff and the deltoid muscle, and the cli

Changes in muscle fiber cross-sectional area and concentrations of Na,K-ATPase in deltoid muscle in patients with impingement syndrome of the shoulder.

Disturbances of the stabilizing musculature are an important factor in painful shoulders. The important changes in the rotator cuff muscles are well established, but less attention is put on possible disturbances of the deltoid muscle. This study investigated the effect of shoulder impingement on muscle fiber cross-sectional area and the Na,K-pump concentration of the deltoid muscle. The study included six patients with impingement syndrome. Biopsies were taken from the affected and unaffected sides. The muscle fiber cross-sectional area and the Na,K-ATPase concentration was measured. There we

The effect of reverse shoulder arthroplasty design and surgical indications on deltoid and rotator cuff muscle length.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in surgical planning, technique, and prosthesis design have improved adaptation to patient anatomy in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA). Postoperative changes in deltoid and rotator cuff muscle length are important and may vary based on preoperative indications and prosthesis selection. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the changes in deltoid and rotator cuff muscle length for planned rTSA using the spectrum of prosthesis configurations in both glenohumeral arthritis (GHOA) and rotator cuff tear arthropathy (RCA). METHODS: Ten shoulder arthroplasty

Movement compensation is driven by the deltoid and teres minor muscles following severe rotator cuff tear.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tears are common in older adults, negatively affecting function. Previous simulation-based studies reported more posterior and superior oriented glenohumeral loading with increased cuff tear severity and task performance, although corresponding muscle compensation strategies are unclear. Our objective is to determine how shoulder muscle forces change with increased rotator cuff tear severity during functional task performance. METHODS: Eight musculoskeletal models of increasing tear severity were developed to represent no rotator cuff tear to massive three-tendon tear

Anatomical basis of the variable aspects of injuries of the axillary nerve (excluding the terminal branches in the deltoid muscle).

The course of the axillary n. is complex with three points of angulation that may be used to delineate four segments and a fifth segment that corresponds to the intramuscular ending of the nerve in the deltoid m. The purpose of this study was to determine the precise anatomy of the nerve and of its branches, and some morphologic features for each segment. Thirty-two shoulders from embalmed adult cadavers have been studied. The axillary n. was divided in five segments: 1) from its origin to the inferior border of the subscapularis m., 2) from the subscapularis m. to the anterolateral border of

[Ultrastructure of the deltoid muscle in wrestlers with habitual shoulder dislocation and during rehabilitation after surgical treatment].

Electron microscopical investigation of the musculus deltoideus bioptates has been performed in wrestlers with a habitual shoulder-slip (7 persons). In the same persons contralateral muscle of the healthy arm has been studied (4 persons) and state of the muscle after operative treatment of the shoulder-slip (4 persons) has been analysed. At repeated shoulder-slips signs of the muscle atrophy are noted; this is clear from destructive changes of myofibrils, appearance of a great number of necrotized fibers, outgrowth of the connective tissue. In two cases ectopic formation of the bone in the mus

Coaptation/elevation role of the middle deltoid muscle fibers: a static biomechanical pilot study using shoulder MRI.

PURPOSE: It is generally recognized that the middle deltoid muscle fibers (MDMF) have an elevating effect on the humeral head at small abduction angles. These forces are normally counterbalanced by the coaptation effect of the rotator cuff (RC) muscles to maintain shoulder stability. With RC tears, this balance may be jeopardized leading to shoulder dysfunction. Conversely, not all patients with RC tears develop shoulder dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the coaptation/elevation forces (CEF) ratio of the MDMF in RC tears subjects and in volunteers, using magnetic resona

Electrophysiological assessment of the deltoid muscle after minimally invasive treatment of proximal humerus fractures - a clinical observation.

The minimal anterolateral acromial approach offers a less invasive access to the proximal humerus. Functional impairment following this procedure may be caused by paresis of the deltoid muscle as a result of iatrogenic injury to the axillary nerve. It was addressed whether electromyography (EMG) of the deltoid muscle gives evidence for an axillary nerve lesion in association with the minimal anterolateral acromial approach.Twenty-three patients (14 men, 9 women; average age 58 years) with proximal humerus fractures were included in this clinical observation. Follow-up was performed 6 weeks (6w

Larger muscle mass of the upper limb correlates with lower amplitudes of deltoid MEPs following transcranial stimulation.

To perform spinal surgery safely, it is important to understand the risk factors, including factors that negatively influence intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM). Transcranial motor evoked potentials (TcMEPs) are important in IONM. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether muscle mass affects the waveforms of TcMEPs to understand the risk factors influencing TcMEPs. We enrolled 48 patients with thoracolumbar spinal diseases who underwent surgery at our facility between April 2015 and March 2018. Before surgery, the body composition, including muscle mass and fat mass, of all patients was me
