Comparisons of tooth sizes, dental arch dimensions, tooth wear, and dental crowding in Amazonian indigenous people.

INRODUCTION: Our objective was to assess tooth wear, arch dimensions, tooth sizes, and dental crowding in 4 remote indigenous villages on the Xingu River in Brazil. These populations have similar patterns of dietary habits and practice exclusive breast-feeding, whereas studies in human genetics show large intertribal genetic distances and low intratribal variations. METHODS: Dental casts of 107 subjects in the permanent dentition were evaluated. Tooth wear, arch dimensions, mesiodistal tooth widths, and the irregularity index of the incisors were obtained and compared using analysis of varian

Dental arch shape in twins: A morphometric study of genetic influences.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to assess the relative contribution of genes to shape variation in the permanent dental arches in individuals of Western European descent. METHODS: The dental casts from 64 monozygotic and 38 dizygotic twins, housed in the Adelaide Dental School's twin record collection, Australia, were assessed. The subjects were of Western European descent, with a mean age of 19.4 ± 5.4 years. Dental casts were scanned using a 3-dimensional scanner (3Shape E4, 3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark), and landmarks were placed on incisal edges and cusp tips of canines, prem

Three-Dimensional Evaluation of Dental Arches in Individuals with Syndromic Craniosynostosis.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with syndromic craniosynostosis present alterations in the dental arches due to anomalies caused by the early fusion of the craniomaxillary sutures. This study aimed to compare intradental and interdental dimensions between individuals with Apert and Crouzon syndromes and nonsyndromic controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Digital models were obtained from the archive of a public tertiary care hospital. The sample consisted of 34 patients (Apert n = 18, Crouzon n = 16) and 34 nonsyndromic controls matched for gender and age. Measurements of perimeter, length, intercanine and

Effects of force magnitude on dental arches in cervical headgear therapy.

AIM: To study the influence of different force magnitudes on dental arches in cervical headgear (CHG) treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this controlled clinical trial, patients (n = 40) were treated with CHG with light (L, 300 g, n = 22) or heavy force (H, 500 g, n = 18) magnitude. Subjects were asked to use CHG for 10 hours a day for 10 months. The outer bow of the CHG facebow was raised 10-20 degrees and the inner bow expanded 3-4 mm. Adherence to instructions and force magnitude were monitored with an electronic module (Smartgear, Swissorthodontics, Switzerland). Impressions for study mo

Dental arches in inherited severe isolated growth hormone deficiency.

OBJECTIVES: The growth of the dental arches depends on GH and insulin-like growth factor type 1 (IGF1), but the consequences of GH deficiency (GHD) on their growth are still unclear, probably due to the acquired etiology of GHD in most described series, often associated with additional pituitary deficits (thyrotrophic, corticotrophic and gonadotrophic hormones), and imperfections of related replacement therapies, which may affect the dental arch growth. To avoid these limitations, we took advantage of a unique cohort of subjects with isolated GH deficiency (IGHD) due the same mutation in the G

Evaluation of conformity of preformed orthodontic archwires and dental arch form.

INTRODUCTION: The alterations in the arch form during treatment are dictated by the dimensions of the archwires. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the mean arch dimensions of a sample of Pakistani subjects and to evaluate the conformity of preformed archwires with mandibular arch form. METHODS: The dental records of 1,500 adult subjects were evaluated. The mandibular casts of 42 subjects (males = females = 21) with balanced facial profile, Class I occlusion, ideal overjet and overbite were included. Brackets were bonded on all teeth. Arch dimensions were evaluated at canines, first pr

Influence of third molar space on angulation and dental arch crowding.

The influence of the third molars on mandibular incisor crowding has been extensively studied but remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether, in Mongolian subjects, the lower third molar can affect anterior crowding and/or the inclination of teeth in the lower lateral segments. Panoramic radiographs, 45° oblique cephalograms, and dental casts were taken from Mongolian subjects (age range 18.3-24.1 years, mean 21.0 years) exhibiting impaction of all four third molars and an Angle Class I molar relationship. The Ganss ratio was calculated using panoramic radiograph

Effect of the lower third molars on the lower dental arch crowding.

Increasing lower dental arch crowding with the age is a recognized clinical problem, and one that has become more apparent in recent years as more adults retain their teeth longer. One of the theories is that the erupting third molars push anterior teeth forward and cause their crowding. On the other hand, a number of studies found no correlation between lower third molars and lower incisor crowding. Because of all these contrasting findings this study was started to re-evaluate correlation between third molars presence and lower dental arch crowding. The study group consisted of 91 subjects w

[The classification of defects in the dental arches of children and orthodontic treatment methods].

Dentition defects occurring in children are classified into 6 classes with subclasses in some of them. Class I includes dentition with defects in the frontal part, class II includes dentitions with distal defects. Both classes include special subclasses for dentition with defects of deciduous teeth, of permanent teeth with underdeveloped roots, and of permanent teeth with mature roots. Non-distal dentition defects (class III) are divided into two subclasses: unilateral and bilateral. Class IV includes dentition with multiple defects in various age groups. Dentition defects combined with maxill

The effects of infraocclusion: Part 3. Dental arch length and the midline.

The third and final article in this series examines the effect of infraocclusion on the midline of the mandibular dental arch. From clinical observation, a shift in the dental midline to the side affected by infraocclusion seemed very common, and this could be explained within the terms of the hypothesis proposed in the first article. A method was devised on a panoramic radiograph to define and to distinguish the anatomic (skeletal) midline and the dental midline. This confirmed the existence of a dental shift to the affected side. The hemiarch length of each side was measured on the film, fro

[A study on interdental spaces of the deciduous dental arch in Indian sample].

The primate spaces are described as a genetic characteristic of all primate dentitions. In homo sapiens, they are limited to the deciduous dentition. We have now investigated the prevalence of primate spaces and interdental spaces in the deciduous dentition by sex and arch in samples from Indian children and the relationship between these spaces and other morphological characteristics of the deciduous dental arches. The samples were taken from 55 school children, 26 males and 29 females aged 5-7 years, belonging to the middle class of socio-economic status and living in New Delhi. The samples

The importance of casting an eye beyond the dental arch: A case report.

Study models are frequently used in orthodontics and are a key part of both initial assessment and treatment planning. They are an important part of comprehensive orthodontic records; furthermore, study models are an essential diagnostic aid that can be studied in detail without the patient being present. We present a case of a 14-year-old boy with an abnormal palatal swelling detected by his specialist orthodontist after review of study models taken at the initial appointment. At the assessment alone, the significance of the abnormality was not recognised and without the help of study models,

Dental Arch Development of Chinese Adolescents: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Understanding the patterns of dental arch development is crucial for precise diagnosis and management of malocclusion in adolescents. However, large-scale, region-specific analyses based on big data are scarce. This study aimed to identify the dental arch growth patterns of Chinese adolescents to refine early orthodontic treatment strategies. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was conducted using 3D digital impressions from 5951 Chinese adolescents, collected between July 2020 and June 2021. AI-assisted measurements delineated dental arch dimensions, which

Relationship between dental and basal arch forms in mandibular anterior crowding.

INTRODUCTION: Positive correlations between the mandibular dental and basal arch forms in patients with minimum crowding have been observed; however, the relationship in orthodontic patients with mandibular anterior crowding (MnAC) remains unclear. Therefore, we evaluated this relationship in patients with MnAC requiring premolar extraction. METHODS: Thirty women with normal occlusion (mean age, 20.6 ± 2.5 years) and 30 women with Class I MnAC (mean age, 20.3 ± 2.9 years) were selected as control and MnAC groups, respectively. The widths and depths of the mandibular dental and basal arches at
