Dentoalveolar abscess are localized infections within the tooth or the surrounding alveolar bone, often resulting from untreated dental caries or dental trauma causing alveolar bone resorption or even loss. Serious consequences arising from the spread of a dental abscess can often lead to significant morbidity and mortality. The acute dentoalveolar abscess is a polymicrobial infection comprising strict anaerobes, such as anaerobic cocci i.e., Prevotella fusobacterium species, and facultative anaerobes i.e., Streptococci viridians and Streptococcus anginosus. Moreover, inappropriately managed d

Background Nitrous oxide (N2O), used in dentistry for inhalation sedation, is a greenhouse gas. Advice on how to mitigate the environmental harm in healthcare settings is not dental-specific.Aim The aim was to quantify the environmental impact of N2O used in UK dentistry, and make recommendations to reduce the environmental harm, while maintaining patient care.Method This study followed quality improvement project methodology. Following a pilot at the Eastman Dental Hospital in London, a national protocol was devised and advertised through the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry in 2022. P

INTRODUCTION: The proper classification of sharp and infectious waste in situ by the healthcare workers is an important measure of prevention of sharps and other exposure incidents in non-healthcare workers, who handle such waste. The aim was to examine the practice of classifying sharp and infectious waste in family and dental practices.
METHODS: An analysis of 50 bags of infectious and 50 bags of municipal waste from five family and five dental practices for five days in October 2016 at the Health centre Osijek.
RESULTS: Healthcare workers in 70% of the practices deposited sharps in infect

The publication of the Five Year Forward View promoted a drive within the NHS to improve access to care for all patients, across all specialties. This article describes what would be expected of a general dental practitioner (GDP) when treating patients with a cleft lip and/or palate in primary care and when it would be appropriate to refer and work alongside specialist services at the hospital. The inspiration for this article began after an audit investigating the complexity level of treatment need of patients with a cleft lip and/or palate referred into the Adult Restorative Clinic at Guy's

BACKGROUND: Because heavy drinking is a risk factor for oral cancer, dentists should screen patients for alcohol use. The authors investigated heavy drinking in dental patients and patients' attitudes about alcohol screening.
METHODS: A convenience sample of 408 patients attending an emergency walk-in dental clinic served as subjects. Patients completed the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-C (AUDIT-C), a three-item alcohol screening test, and an opinion survey regarding attitudes about the acceptability of alcohol screening and counseling by dentists.
RESULTS: One in four patients h

To determine the incidence of delayed healing after dental extractions in men with HIV infection, a retrospective audit was conducted of all extractions performed in a dedicated dental clinic over a 26-month period. The incidence of delayed healing in patients with HIV was compared with the incidence in those patients without HIV. Eighty men with HIV had 163 teeth extracted, which resulted in five dry sockets (3.01%). Thirty-six men thought not to have HIV had 70 extractions and three dry sockets (4.28%). All three dry sockets in the control group occurred in men who had tested negative for HI

Available data suggest that the provision of periodontally related services in general dental practices is low. However, studies indicate that the employment of dental hygienists is associated with increased provision. One method of measuring is by examination of notations in patient treatment records. As part of a project assessing the effectiveness of professional education in changing the provision of periodontal services, 2280 records, comprising 60 randomly selected records of dentate adult patients who had received a dental examination in the previous 6 months were audited in each of 38

Root canal treatment techniques probably develop and change more frequently than any other area of dental practice and it can be hard for the busy general dental practitioner to keep up to date. The aim of this series of five papers is to give a thorough review of current teaching and practice. This will encompass the rationale of root canal treatment, guidance on the latest technical procedures for preparation and obturation of the entire root canal system, and consideration of how these principles may contribute to successful treatment. The series will address the following issues: diagnosis

Aim To determine the prevalence of restoration overhangs in a general dental practice and investigate if these are associated with an increase in the rate of alveolar bone loss locally. Methods Historical dental records were randomly and anonymously selected from the records of patients in a general dental practice. The most recent bitewing radiographs were examined and any overhangs were recorded along with location. Sequential bitewing radiographs were examined so that the restored tooth with an overhang could be compared over time with a similar but unrestored tooth which acted as a control.

UNLABELLED: Peri-radicular surgery is a valuable treatment modality allowing thorough treatment of chronic infection of the peri-radicular tissues. It is important that this treatment option is prescribed appropriately and steps are taken to help improve outcomes of surgery. We discuss the indications for peri-radicular surgery, considerations when planning treatment for teeth where orthograde endodontics has failed and present the findings of an audit into the appropriateness of referrals for peri-radicular surgery to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at a District General Hosp

This study presents a proof-of-concept deep learning approach for automated detection and classification of restorative dental instruments on standardized trays, aiming to support workflow automation and infection control in dental supply units. A dataset comprising 1,000 images and 14,000 annotated instances of restorative dental instruments across 14 categories was developed. The YOLOv8 model was trained and evaluated on this dataset using standard object detection metrics, including precision, recall, and mean average precision at IoU thresholds 0.5 (mAP@0.5) and 0.5:0.95 (mAP@[0.5:0.95]).
