Effect of acid type on kinetics and mechanism of dental enamel demineralization.

The influence of acid type (pKa effects) of weak organic acid buffers on dissolution kinetics of dental enamel was critically examined for rigorous testing of the behavioral validity of the physical model of Patel et al. (1987). Quantitative evaluation of this model indicated that monitoring initial dissolution rates was a viable approach to critical testing of the model. Initial dissolution rates were determined in 0.1 mol/L acetate (pKa = 4.77), benzoate (pKa = 4.20), and salicylate (pKa = 2.98) buffers (pH = 4.50, mu = 0.50), with ground bovine enamel blocks of known surface area mounted in

Thermo stable ZnO NPs/Asiatic acid nanocomposites for acidogenic neutralization, anti-biofilm, and enamel protection in dental enamel reinforcement.

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries, a pervasive oral health issue, is driven by Streptococcus mutans-mediated biofilm formation and acidogenesis, culminating in enamel demineralization and structural degradation. This study evaluates the efficacy of thermostable ZnO NPs/AA nanocomposites in suppressing S.mutans acid production, disrupting its biofilm matrix, and strengthening enamel integrity, with an emphasis on its potential as a novel dental healthcare material. METHODS: This study encompassed the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles functionalized with Asiatic acid (ZnO NPs/AA) using a co-precipi

Tetracycline Enables Visualization of Remineralization Induced by Agents Penetrating Dental Enamel.

The demineralization of tooth enamel caused by acid attack in dental biofilms is a significant challenge in dentistry. While fluoride varnishes are widely used to protect and restore the enamel surface, their actual ability to penetrate and treat the enamel in depth remains poorly understood. This study proposes an innovative in vitro approach to visualize the diffusion of remineralizing agents into enamel depth using by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Four commercial fluoride varnishes (MI Varnish®, Duraphat®, FluoroCal®, Clinpro Clear Fluoride®) were applied to artificially demine

Morphology and structure of polymer layers protecting dental enamel against erosion.

OBJECTIVES: Human dental erosion caused by acids is a major factor for tooth decay. Adding polymers to acidic soft drinks is one important approach to reduce human dental erosion caused by acids. The aim of this study was to investigate the thickness and the structure of polymer layers adsorbed in vitro on human dental enamel from polymer modified citric acid solutions. METHODS: The polymers propylene glycol alginate (PGA), highly esterified pectin (HP) and gum arabic (GA) were used to prepare polymer modified citric acids solutions (PMCAS, pH 3.3). With these PMCAS, enamel samples were treat

Dental radiography: tooth enamel EPR dose assessment from Rando phantom measurements.

Electron paramagnetic resonance dosimetry of tooth enamel is now established as a suitable method for individual dose reconstruction following radiation accidents. The accuracy of the method is limited by some confounding factors, among which is the dose received due to medical x-ray irradiation. In the present paper the EPR response of tooth enamel to endoral examination was experimentally evaluated using an anthropomorphic phantom. The dose to enamel for a single exposure of a typical dental examination performed with a new x-ray generation unit working at 65 kVp gave rise to a CO2- signal o

Dental enamel defects in first-degree relatives of coeliac disease patients.

To find out whether dental changes can be used to screen for coeliac disease among apparently healthy relatives of patients with the disorder, 56 healthy first-degree relatives of such patients were subjected to dental examination and small bowel biopsy. 25 had coeliac-type general permanent-tooth enamel lesions. All 7 who had histological evidence of coeliac disease also had enamel lesions. The finding that enamel defects may occur without small bowel changes must be borne in mind in screening. The coeliac-type enamel changes were strongly associated with HLA-DR3, and most of the DR3 alleles

The craniofacial, dental and systemic manifestations of Enamel Renal Syndrome: A Scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Enamel Renal Syndrome (ERS) (OMIM 204690) is a rare genetic condition characterised by a distinct oral profile and sometimes nephrocalcinosis. This autosomal recessive condition, caused by pathogenic variants in the FAM20A gene, is linked to ectopic mineralisation in tissues such as dental pulp, follicles, gingiva, and kidneys. Although the oral phenotype has been well-characterised, less common features have been described, highlighting possible gaps in the literature on the phenotypic variability of the condition. METHODS: This scoping review follows PRISMA-ScR guidelines and

Enamel protein regulation and dental and periodontal physiopathology in MSX2 mutant mice.

Signaling pathways that underlie postnatal dental and periodontal physiopathology are less studied than those of early tooth development. Members of the muscle segment homeobox gene (Msx) family encode homeoproteins that show functional redundancy during development and are known to be involved in epithelial-mesenchymal interactions that lead to crown morphogenesis and ameloblast cell differentiation. This study analyzed the MSX2 protein during mouse postnatal growth as well as in the adult. The analysis focused on enamel and periodontal defects and enamel proteins in Msx2-null mutant mice. In

Dental tissue proportions and enamel thickness in Neandertal and modern human molars.

The thickness of dental enamel is often discussed in paleoanthropological literature, particularly with regard to differences in growth, health, and diet between Neandertals and modern humans. Paleoanthropologists employ enamel thickness in paleodietary and taxonomic studies regarding earlier hominins, but variation in enamel thickness within the genus Homo has not been thoroughly explored despite its potential to discriminate species and its relevance to studies of growth and development. Radiographic two-dimensional studies indicate that Neandertal molar enamel is thin relative to the thick
