Dental Manifestations of Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes: A Systematic Review.

Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of inherited connective tissue disorders characterized by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and variable tissue fragility. However, there are limited published data on the dental manifestations of EDS. This review systematically assessed the spectrum of published dental anomalies in various types of EDS. Twenty-four individual case reports/series and 3 longer case-control studies, reporting on a total of 84 individuals with a clinical diagnosis of EDS, were included in the data analysis. The main dental features listed in classical EDS were

Pulp vitality and histologic changes in human dental pulp after the application of moderate and severe intrusive orthodontic forces.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic forces produce a series of changes in dental pulp. However, no one has attempted to investigate the incidence of pulp necrosis after orthodontic therapy in the clinic. In this study, we aimed to investigate pulp vitality and histologic changes after the application of moderate and severe intrusive forces. METHODS: Twenty-seven adolescent patients were assigned to 1 of 3 groups: the control group of 3 subjects; the moderate-force group, with 12 subjects who received a 50-g force to the first premolars bilaterally; and the severe-force group, with 12 subjects who recei

Association of sickle cell haemoglobinopathies with dental and jaw bone abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between sickle cell anaemia and trait with dental and jaw bone abnormalities. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Subjects (n = 369) were allocated to three groups: sickle cell anaemia, trait and control. Dental shape, number, size and position and changes in pulp chamber, root and periapex were analysed by intra-oral periapical radiographs. Integrity of lamina dura, quality of cancellous bone and bone trabeculation were also evaluated. Prevalence ratios (PR) were calculated (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Sickle cell anaemia had higher prevalence (PR:8.31) and number of teeth

Is hard tissue formation in the dental pulp after the death of the primary odontoblasts a regenerative or a reparative process?

OBJECTIVES: Conceptually, two types of tertiary dentine may be produced in response to caries and environmental irritations: "reactionary dentine" that is secreted by existing primary odontoblasts and "reparative dentine", formed after the death of the odontoblasts by proliferation and differentiation of progenitor cells into odontoblast-like cells. Because histologic evidence for tubular dentine generated by newly differentiated odontoblast-like cells is lacking in human teeth, the present study examined pulpal cellular changes associated with caries/restorations, in the presence or absence o

A Cross-Sectional Cohort Study of the Effects of FGF23 Deficiency and Hyperphosphatemia on Dental Structures in Hyperphosphatemic Familial Tumoral Calcinosis.

Hyperphosphatemic familial tumoral calcinosis (HFTC) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in FGF23, GALNT3, KLOTHO, or FGF23 autoantibodies. Prominent features include high blood phosphate and calcific masses, usually adjacent to large joints. Dental defects have been reported, but not systematically described. Seventeen patients with HFTC followed at the National Institutes of Health underwent detailed clinical, biochemical, molecular, and dental analyses. Studies of teeth included intraoral photos and radiographs, high-resolution μCT, histology, and scanning electron mi

Clinical aspects of pulp stones: A case report series.

Pulp stones (PSs) are calcified masses that can be found in the pulp cavity of any deciduous or permanent tooth. They can be observed in healthy, diseased, and even unerupted or impacted teeth. Calcifications within the pulp may lead to a poorer outcome of a root canal procedure, as they can block access to the root canals, and hinder their subsequent cleaning and shaping. The paper describes 4 clinical cases of denticles located in the coronal and radicular pulp. Therapeutic methods of PS removal with different techniques and instruments are discussed. Specialist root canal treatment (RCT) wa

Reaction of the dental pulp to hydroxyapatite.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the action of hydroxyapatite (HA) (Osteogen HA Resorb, GBD Marketing Group Inc., Valley Stream, N.Y.) on the dental pulp of rats. Four upper molar pulps in 45 rats were exposed and capped with synthetic HA (Osteogen) with a stereoscopic microscope. Pulps capped with calcium hydroxide (Dycal, L.D. Caulk Co., Milford, Del.) served as controls. The cavities were filled with amalgam, and the molars on each side of the maxilla were protected by the placement of a pedodontic steel crown. Pulp inflammation and dentin repair were compared by histologic observa

Electron microscope characteristics of dentin repair after hydroxylapatite direct pulp capping in rats.

In order to study the osteogenic action of hydroxylapatite (HA) on the dental pulp, a pulp capping experiment was designed using the rat upper molar. Under general anesthesia, molar teeth in 14 male Sprague-Dawley rats were pulp capped with Osteogen (HA) or with Dycal as a control material. After pulp capping, the maxillary molars cavities were restored with amalgam and a pedodontic steel crown was adjusted and sealed over the molar teeth on either side of the maxilla. After 7 days, the areas of necrosis and acute inflammation were more evident in the pulps treated with Dycal than with Osteoge

Evaluation of the effect of delayed management of traumatized permanent teeth.

This investigation studied the complication that could arise from delayed management of traumatized permanent teeth. Patients reported to the primary care clinic at the College of Dentistry, King Saud University, seeking treatment of traumatized anterior teeth were evaluated. Esthetic consideration (64 patients) and pain, swelling, or discomforts (50 patients) were the main reasons the patients came to the clinic. Clinical and radiographic examinations, as well as history of the trauma, were recorded. It was found that most of the patients had a treatment delay exceeding 1 month. Initial pulp

Life cycles of traumatized teeth: long-term observations from a cohort of dental trauma victims.

Life cycles of dental trauma victims can provide important clinical information, especially when viewed over many years. In this first series of life cycles, the pulp and periodontal responses to traumatic injuries of four patients are documented over periods varying from 26 to 51 years. The dynamics of pulp survival following an intrusive luxation and two avulsions are followed, with particular reference to pulp canal calcification to which a new term, root canal stenosis, has been proposed. The life cycles include the successful management of inflammatory root resorption in a replanted tooth

Generalized "complete" calcific degeneration or pulp obliteration.

Extensive calcification of the pulp is a pathologic condition that occurs as an answer to various factors (trauma, caries, periodontal disease). The increase in the amount of calcification may lead to partial or complete radiographic, but not microscopic, obliteration of the pulp chamber and root canals. Complete calcific degeneration (pulpal obliteration) may be found in two forms, generalized or localized. The generalized form which is presented in the present case report is probably part of the aging process.

Pulpal response to intrusive orthodontic forces.

Many studies have examined the effect of orthodontic forces on supporting tissue. However, their effect on dental pulp has not been sufficiently studied. The aim of the present study was to evaluate, histologically, the pulpal response to the action of intrusive orthodontic forces. The study was performed on 40 first premolars which had to be extracted for orthodontic reasons from 11-17 year-old patients. The twenty teeth of the experimental group received, prior to extraction, an intrusive force with an initial load of 150 g over a period of 15 to 20 days. The control group comprised the 20 h

Abrasion and dental pulp morphological changes in occlusal dysfunction.

AIM: The authors set out to assess if the presence and the degree of severity of the abrasion, as a consequence of the occlusal dysfunction, determine further morphological changes in the dental pulp. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Study group included teeth dental pulp from 45 cases with occlusal dysfunction, subsequently divided into two subgroups: 24 cases with abrasion (AB) and 21 cases without abrasion (NONAB). The set of morphological parameters of dental pulp were thicknesses of the outer layer, inner layer and entire peripheral pulp zone, the presence of pulpal calcifications and their extent

Radicular Cyst Associated with Type 3B Dens Invaginatus in a Permanent Maxillary Lateral Incisor.

Dens invaginatus (DI) is a developmental abnormality of the tooth resulting in the invagination of the enamel organ into the dental papilla before the calcification of dental tissues. DI is one of the common dental deformities, but its association with the radicular cyst (RC) is still very uncommon. Oehler's Type 3B DI has a deep invagination that extends apically communicating with the apical area. This allows the entry of irritants predisposing for dental caries, periapical lesions, and pulp pathology if there is a communication with pulp. The sequelae of undiagnosed and untreated coronal in
