The present study was designed to investigate the effect of surgical trauma on pulp tissue. Two-walled osseous defects were surgically created at the mesial sides of the bilateral mandibular second bicuspids of four Taiwan monkeys. The cementum and partial thickness of dentin were removed with diamond bur. At one side of the mandible, the perforation was made at the midpoint of the root surface facing the created osseous defect to allow the pulp tissue to communicate the defects. The flaps were readapted. The monkeys were sacrificed 6 months postoperatively and prepared for the histologic eval

One hundred fifty cases of endodontic treatment failures were studied clinically, radiographically, and histologically. Fifty-seven percent of the teeth were asymptomatic. Pain alone and/or associated with swelling was present in 21% of the teeth. There was no correlation between the size of periradicular rarefaction and the occurrence or severity of clinical signs and/or symptoms. Stainable bacteria were demonstrated in 69% of the teeth and were present mostly in the canal. The severity of periradicular inflammation was related to presence of stainable bacteria in the canal. Swelling and pain

OBJECTIVE: To develop an evidence-based S3-level clinical practice guideline for the management of deep and extremely deep caries in vital permanent teeth.
METHODS: An evidence-based medical guideline based on systematically searched and appraised evidence as well as a structured consensus (S3-level) was jointly developed by the European Federation of Conservative Dentistry (EFCD), the European Society of Endodontology (ESE), the Organization for Caries Research (ORCA) and the German Society of Conservative Dentistry (DGZ), following the methodological framework of the Association of Scientif

This article describes the relationship between the carious process and pulp-dentine complex reactions. Where the balance between the two is in favour of the carious process and where conventional cavity preparation leads to a direct pulp exposure, the direct pulp cap technique is described. The success of the technique is addressed and more importantly an alternative technique for caries removal, namely stepwise excavation, is described which may lead to a reduced risk of carious exposure and the need for the direct pulp cap technique.

Indirect pulp treatment is a conservative vital pulp procedure performed in deep carious lesion approximating the pulp, but without signs or symptoms of pulp degeneration. Removing the carious biomass along with sealing the residual caries from extrinsic substrate and oral bacteria makes residual caries after the first excavation less active. This allows time for pulpo dentinal complex to form tertiary dentine so that at the second excavation, there is less likelihood of pulpal exposure. It has also been suggested that by changing the cavity environment from an active lesion into a more slowly

The current diversity of opinions in endodontic diagnosis has been a source of interest and academic debate by clinicians and researchers. Currently, no single pulp testing technique can reliably diagnose all pulpal conditions neither it has been proven to be superior in all aspects. Despite improvements of various aspects of this process, there are no historically dramatic changes, or consensus for pulpal status in health or disease in addition to a lack of relative systematic reviews. In this review, the past, present and future most debated and critically questioned issues of endodontic dia

PURPOSE: To evaluate the pulp response following direct pulp capping with an adhesive system (Prime & Bond 2.0 - PB 2.0) and a zinc-oxide eugenol cement (ZOE) on pulp exposures in rat molar teeth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight Class I cavities were prepared on the occlusal surface of molar teeth of rats (Rattus Norvegicus, Holtzman). Pulp exposures performed on the cavity floor were capped either with the adhesive system P&B 2.0 or ZOE. After 7, 15, 30, and 60 days, the specimens were processed through H & E and Brown & Brenn staining techniques.
RESULTS: Both pulp capping materials all

Dental sepsis or periapical abscess formation constitutes a large percentage of dental conditions that afflict horses. Dental sepsis occurs when the pulp chamber of the tooth is exposed to the oral cavity or external environment, allowing bacterial localization with resulting infection. Although acute, primary, septic pulpitis in horses is rare, dental sepsis often results from colonization of the pulp chamber with pathogenic bacteria secondary to maleruption or impaction of teeth with secondary alveolar bone lysis, primary fractures of the tooth, mandible, or maxilla, periodontal disease, or

This study presents a histological analysis through optical microscopy of primary teeth with physiological and pathological resorptions to outline the histological profile of resorptions. Sixty teeth were examined: 19 primary teeth with physiological resorption and 41 primary teeth with pathological resorption. To analyze the histological conditions of the pulp, periradicular tissue, and the resorption areas, and to investigate the presence, intensity, and location of bacteria, slides were prepared using the hematoxylin-eosin and the Brown-Brenn techniques. For the teeth with physiological res

The systematic analysis of museum collections can provide important insights into the dental and skeletal pathology of wild mammals. Here we present a previously unreported type of dental defect and related skull pathology in five juvenile Baltic grey seals that had been collected in the course of a seal culling program along the Danish coast in 1889 and 1890. All five skulls exhibited openings into the pulp cavities at the crown tips of all (four animals) or two (one animal) canines as well as several incisors and (in one animal) also some anterior premolars. The affected teeth showed wide pu

BACKGROUND: A pulp stone is a calcified mass that develops in the dental pulp of any tooth. Despite many studies examining the relationship between pulp stone formation and non-oral factors, the methods used in these studies have been unable to explain the exact role of these factors alone as distinct from probable effects within the oral cavity environment. Considering that totally unerupted (impacted or developing) teeth are unexposed to the oral cavity's environmental and functional conditions, they provide a more suitable material for studying the effects of these non-oral factors on pulp

Regenerative endodontic procedures are undertaken on permanent teeth with necrotic pulps and open apices in an attempt to resolve symptoms, to allow the continued development of the root(s), and to reestablish vitality. The available histologic analysis of these teeth has, in the majority of studies, shown that true regeneration of the pulp-dentin complex is not achieved. A recent investigation using an animal model outlined a procedure wherein pulpal amputation a few millimeters short of the apex followed by evoked bleeding allowed the complete regeneration of the normal pulp-dentin complex i

Infection of the root canal system following dental trauma induces pulp and periapical disease and prevents healing of previously healthy pulp. A clinical goal in treating trauma is the maintenance of pulp vitality, and clinicians should be aware of factors that influence pulp healing. The learning objective of this article is to review the factors and techniques that influence pulp vitality and examine the influence pulp has on the healing of adjacent tissues. The potential routes for bacterial infection of the root canal system are discussed, with the clinical crown as the primary portal of

Deep cavities were prepared on rats' molars, and fresh carious dentin was enclosed in to establish animal pulpitis model. Immunohistochemical method was used to observe the distribution of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) positive nerve fibers in rats' normal dental pulps and inflammatory pulps at 4d, 8d, 14d respectively. CGRP positive fibers were found throughout the normal pulps, a large number of fibers penetrated into dentinal tubules. In 4d group, CGRP positive fibers became denser and the number of fibers penetrating into dentinal tubules also increased. In 8d group, a necrotic zo
