OBJECTIVES: 10-Methacryloyloxy-decyl-dihydrogen-phosphate (10-MDP) is currently considered as one of the most effective functional monomers for dental bonding, this in part thanks to its long and relatively hydrophobic spacer chain, adequately separating the polymerizable from the phosphate functionalities. This study compared functional monomers with different spacer chains' length and hydrophilicity to 10-MDP on their dentin and enamel bonding performance.
METHODS: Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) was used to characterize the chemical interaction. Micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) and

The infectious disease dental caries results in lesions that may affect enamel, dentin, pulp, and cementum. If a caries lesion has progressed to the stage at which it requires restorative intervention, it is important that the clinician understand the tissue changes in the dentin that are likely to have taken place during lesion development. Until the present, no major distinction between the restorative treatment of active (rapidly progressing) and arrested (slowly progressing) lesions has been made, despite the fact that the two conditions exhibit major differences in tissue changes in the p

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the dentinal tubule-occluding efficacy of various desensitising toothpastes and a sodium fluoride varnish using a subnanolitre scaled fluid flow measuring device (NFMD).
METHODS: Bovine dentin specimens were treated with four desensitising toothpastes (Colgate, Median, Bamboo Salt, and Sensodyne), a 2.1% sodium fluoride professionally-deliverable varnish (Clinpro), and distilled water (DW). Real-time dentinal fluid flow (DFF) was measured under simulated pulpal pressure (32 cm H₂O) for 1000 seconds using the NFMD system. Each toothpaste was

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the combined occluding effects of fluoride-containing dentin desensitizer and neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd-YAG) laser irradiation on human dentinal tubules. All six of the groups of dentin samples (A-F) included in this study received applications of fluoride-containing dentin desensitizer. Groups B, D, and F also received Nd-YAG laser irradiation. Groups A and B served as controls, to allow observations of the occluding effects on the dentinal tubules before and after Nd-YAG laser irradiation. Groups C and D were treated with 0.5 M vit

Dentin has a relatively high water content due to its tubular structure. Once dentin is exposed, this intratubular water is free to move in response to thermal, osmotic, evaporative, or tactile stimuli. Fluid shifts across dentin are thought to cause sufficient shear forces on odontoblasts, nerve endings, nearby fibroblasts, and blood vessels to cause significant mechanical irritation, disruption, or damage, depending on the magnitude of the fluid shift. Even in the absence of fluid shifts, the water-filled tubules provide diffusion channels for noxious (i.e., bacterial products) substances wh

This bibliographic review provides a general view of the etiology, characteristics and treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity, so that professionals can use this information in the therapeutic management of this clinical condition. For this purpose, the authors have analyzed whole texts of relevant articles on the subject. This study showed that the predisposing factors associated with the causes of dentinal hypersensitivity must be controlled or eliminated, by educating the patient regarding the excessive intake of acidic food, as well as providing guidance on the proper tooth brushing techni

OBJECTIVE: Insufficient penetration of bonding agents into the demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) leads to a poor-quality hybrid layer and reduced bonding durability. We designed a pretreatment agent consisting of copper sulfate and dipotassium hydrogen phosphate to form amorphous copper phosphate nanoparticles (Nano-ACuP) in situ for improved dentin bonding.
METHODS: The effect of different concentrations of the pretreatment agent on the release of confined water was investigated. Moreover, the deposition and binding sites, hydrophilicity, surface charge, and mechanical properties were charac

Recent data have shown a correlation between pulp response and material biocompatibility when microleakage is prevented. Considering vital dentin, the dentist must keep in mind that it is an extension of the pulp, presenting the first line of response to the consequences of microleakage. Healing of the dental pulp is ensured when a clinical seal is provided to prevent bacterial microleakage. Microleakage is a biological phenomenon with several important clinical implications. The affective component clinically presents as dentin postoperative hypersensitivity due to the episodic hydrodynamic f

The concept of tubular occlusion as a method of dentine desensitisation is a logical conclusion from the hydrodynamic hypothesis put forth by Brannström. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate qualitatively by SEM whether a 3% potassium nitrate/0.2% sodium fluoride mouthwash occluded tubule orifices, and by x-ray microanalysis, to characterise the nature of the deposits if any, following application. Following the 'dentine disc model' methodology 1mm thick tooth sections from unerupted molars were obtained. These were treated with the test and control mouthwashes and subjected to s

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate dentinal fluid flow reduction following brushing with desensitizing toothpastes using a sub-nanoliter fluid flow measurement system, and to determine the relationship between formulation viscosity and permeability reduction. METHODS: Bovine dentin specimens (n = 10) were subjected to standardized brushing with six toothpaste slurries (Bamboo salt sensitive, Bamboo salt medicare, Colgate, Sensodyne, Median, and Reference slurry) for cumulative counts of 5,000 and 10,000 strokes under simulated pulpal pressure. The percent reduction in dent

The structure and permeability of cementum are changed during the course of periodontal disease. In this study, the transport of water-soluble, spin-labelled molecules through cementum was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Cementum samples cut from different parts of the root were classified into four different groups: (A) samples exposed to the oral environment, (B) samples exposed to the periodontal-pocket environment; (C) samples cut from periodontally involved teeth but not exposed to saliva or periodontal pocket and (D) samples from sound young teeth extracted for orthodon

Sensitivity after cementation of a crown with glass-ionomer cement is often attributed to an adverse effect on the pulp by the luting agent. Most permanent restorative materials in common use today do not tend to irritate the pulp; the main cause of pulpal damage is infection, the bacteria originating in the smear layer or deep in the dental tubules, inaccessible to caries-excavating procedures. A poorly fitting provisional crown may expose cut dentin to the oral fluids, and mechanical trauma caused by frictional heat during preparation may also damage the pulp. The following precautions are r

Dentin hypersensitivity is a common clinical condition characterized by short, sharp pain arising from exposed dentin in response to thermal, evaporative, tactile, osmotic, or chemical stimuli, in the absence of any other dental pathology. Despite its high prevalence, dentin hypersensitivity remains diagnostically challenging due to its multifactorial etiology, overlap with other dental pain conditions, and variable response to treatment. An electronic literature search of major biomedical databases and relevant dental journals was undertaken, supplemented by hand-searching reference lists, wi

This study evaluated the effect of solvent-based dentin pretreatments containing dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and/or ethanol on trans-dentinal cell viability of bioactive materials in simulated deep clinical cavities. Dentin discs (300 μm) were prepared, balanced among groups according to dentin permeability and autoclaved. Three-dimensional cultures of odontoblast-like cells were transferred to the pulpal aspect of dentin discs inside perfusion split-chambers designed for trans-dentinal cytotoxicity test following ISO 7405 standards. Dentin pretreatments were composed of ethanol (EtOH), DMSO, th

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this work was to develop a method of quantifying the levels and source of calcium and phosphate deposited on dental hard tissue from a novel calcium phosphosilicate (NovaMin) material using neutron activation analysis (NAA). A second objective was to explore the utility of radiotracing to determine dentin porosity following exposure to calcium phosphosilicate.
METHODS: Neutron activation was used to create isotopes of Ca and P in the calcium phosphosilicate particles. Gamma radiation emitted from these isotopes was used to identify and measure their uptake

OBJECTIVES: Amalgam restorations are replaced by adhesively placed composite resin restorations at an increasing rate. After the removal of amalgam dentine often shows marked dark discoloration that is attributed to the penetration of corrosion products from overlying amalgams. It is questioned whether penetration of metals into dentine affects the dentine as a substrate for adhesive procedures. This study has been performed to clarify the origin of dark discoloration of dentine by metals from amalgam with special regards to corrosion products.
METHODS: A review of the literature has been per

Bacterial invasion of dentinal tubules commonly occurs when dentin is exposed following a breach in the integrity of the overlying enamel or cementum. Bacterial products diffuse through the dentinal tubule toward the pulp and evoke inflammatory changes in the pulpo-dentin complex. These may eliminate the bacterial insult and block the route of infection. Unchecked, invasion results in pulpitis and pulp necrosis, infection of the root canal system, and periapical disease. While several hundred bacterial species are known to inhabit the oral cavity, a relatively small and select group of bacteri

These consensus recommendations for the diagnosis and management of dentin hypersensitivity were developed by a broadly constituted board of dentists and dental hygienists drawn from general dental practice, specialist practice, academia and research from across Canada, joined by 2 international dentists with subject matter expertise. The need for consensus recommendations was made evident by the lack of clear and robust evidence in the dental literature, as well as confusion about diagnosis and management demonstrated by an educational needs assessment survey. High prevalence of the condition
