An investigation of potential desensitizing agents in the dentine disc model: a scanning electron microscopy study.

Cervical dentine sensitivity (CDS) may be defined as pain arising from exposed dentine. The prefix cervical indicates the location of the sensitivity and/or its subsequent treatment. Currently the most accepted mechanism of intradental nerve activation associated with dentine sensitivity appears to be hydrodynamic in nature. The concept of tubule occlusion as a method of dentine desensitization is a logical conclusion of the hydrodynamic theory. The authors employed the dentine disc model, qualitative scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray microanalysis to investigate whether selected de

[Dentinal hypersensitivity].

Dentinal hypersensitivity is defined as short and transient painful response of exposed dentin, usually cervical, to different stimuli, such as thermal, mechanical osmotic or chemical. The etiology of dentinal hypersensitivity is open tubules (because of enamel loss or gingival recession), allowing painful stimulus to reach the pulp. The hydrodynamic theory explains the mechanism through which pain is aroused. When treating dentinal hypersensitivity, dentists always have to rule out other pathologies, such as carries, leakage, postoperative sensitivity, cracked tooth etc., and only then assess

Dentin bonding-variables related to the clinical situation and the substrate treatment.

The wetness of dentin surfaces, the presence of pulpal pressure, and the thickness of dentin are extremely important variables during bonding procedures, especially when testing bond strength of adhesive materials in vitro with the intention of simulating in vivo conditions. The ultimate goal of a bonded restoration is to attain an intimate adaptation of the restorative material with the dental substrate. This task is difficult to achieve as the bonding process is different for enamel and for dentin-dentin is more humid and more organic than enamel. While enamel is predominantly mineral, denti

Intrapulpal temperatures during pulsed Nd:YAG laser treatment of dentin, in vitro.

Lasers are being used for soft tissue removal, caries removal, and treatment of root surface sensitivity. One concern for laser safety is that the heat produced at the irradiated root surface may diffuse to the pulp causing irreversible pulpal damage. To test this heat diffusion, copper-constantan thermocouples were inserted into the radicular pulp canals of extracted teeth. Simulating direct exposure which might occur during gingival excision, superficial caries removal, and modification of the dentin surface for treatment of root surface sensitivity, a 2 mm2 area of the external root surface

Effect of composite radiopacity and margin location of the restoration on the diagnosis of secondary caries.

This research aimed to evaluate the effect of the radiopacity of a Bulk-Fill composite (X-TraFil, VOCO, Germany) and a Conventional composite (P60, 3M ESPE, USA) and assessment of the margin location in the enamel and dentin on the diagnosis of secondary caries. 76 intact premolars with MOD preparation were divided into two equal groups and filled with the conventional and bulk-fill composite. Four regions were considered to simulate carious lesions (two regions in enamel and two regions in dentin). In each group, half of the regions in the dentin and half in the enamel were randomly selected

Constructing the Enamel-Like Dentin Adhesion Interface to Achieve Durable Resin-Dentin Adhesion.

Enamel adhesion is acknowledged as durable; however, achieving long-lasting dentin adhesion remains a formidable challenge due to degradation of exposed collagen matrix after acid-etching of dentin. The idea of developing an enamel-like adhesion interface holds great promise in achieving enduring dentin adhesion. In this study, we constructed an enamel-like adhesion interface using a rapid remineralization strategy comprising an acidic primer and a rapid remineralization medium. Specifically, the acidic primer of 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate

Sensory transduction in human teeth with inflamed pulps.

The effects of pulpal inflammation on the sensitivity of dentin to cold (5°C) and negative hydrostatic pressure (-300 mm Hg) stimuli in man were compared, since recent evidence suggests that these stimuli excite different classes of sensory receptors. Dentin was exposed in premolars in 14 participants aged 15-25 years. Stimuli were applied to etched dentin immediately after cavity preparation and after the cavity had been filled with gutta percha for 7 days. This treatment increased significantly the intensity of pain produced by cold, and at the same time decreased that evoked by negative pre

Zn-containing Adhesives Facilitate Collagen Protection and Remineralization at the Resin-Dentin Interface: A Narrative Review.

This is a narrative review of the literature assessing the potential effectiveness of doping dentin polymeric adhesives with zinc compounds in order to improve bonding efficacy, remineralization and protection against degradation. A literature search was conducted using electronic databases, such as PubMed, MEDLINE, DIMDI and Web of Science. Through our search, we found literature demonstrating that Zn-doped dentin adhesives promote protection and remineralization of the resin-dentin interfaces. The increased bioactivity has also facilitated dentinal tubules' occlusion by crystals' precipitati
