Mandibular Contouring in Subjects With Class II or Class III Dentofacial Deformities and Treatment Needs.

Facial contouring relates to hard and soft structures that make up the face. Skeletal class II and III subjects present bone structure and position changes, significantly impacting the soft tissues. This study aims to analyze the morphology of the mandible at mandibular ramus and angle level in subjects with skeletal facial deformity class II and III who are candidates for orthognathic surgery and to define implications in facial contour. A cross-sectional study used cone beam computed tomography to compare the mandibular contour (mandibular angle and ramus region) in orthognathic surgery cand

The prevalence of facial asymmetry in the dentofacial deformities population at the University of North Carolina.

In a retrospective survey of 1,460 patients evaluated in the Dentofacial Clinic at the University of North Carolina, 495 (34%) were found to have clinically apparent facial asymmetry. When present, asymmetry affected the upper face in only 5% (n = 23), the midface (primarily the nose) in 36% (n = 178), and the chin in 74% (n = 365). The occlusal plane was canted, indicating vertical asymmetry, in 41% (n = 201). Patients with Class II problems, whether or not due to mandibular deficiency, had a 28% prevalence of asymmetry; those with other types of problems (e.g., Class III, long face, Class I)

Problematic internet use among people with dentofacial deformity: a preliminary study.

OBJECTIVE: Class III malocclusion represents one type of anterior malocclusions, characterised by a longer face and a more prominent chin. Class III malocclusions are a type of malocclusion related to the relationship between the maxilla and mandible. They are often characterized by mandibular protrusion relative to the maxilla, and in some cases, features such as elongation of the lower facial third or a more prominent chin may also be present. Due to their appearance, patients experience a range of psychosocial and emotional difficulties, which have also been identified as risk factors for p

Combined or Staged Temporomandibular Joint and Orthognathic Surgery for Patients with Internal Derangement and Dentofacial Deformities.

Patients with internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint and dentofacial deformities need appropriate evaluation for both conditions. Correct diagnosis of internal derangement is vital in determining the correct orthognathic surgery plan, and it is particularly important to differentiate between myofascial dysfunction and intra-articular joint problems. Depending on the stage of internal derangement, patients may need treatment for temporomandibular dysfunction symptomatically, staged, or concurrently with orthognathic surgery.

Review of the studies on the relationship and treatment of anterior disk displacement and dentofacial deformity in adolescents.

Anterior disk displacement (ADD) is a common type of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangement. In adolescents, the relationship between ADD and dentofacial deformities are brought into focus. Whether treatment is needed, or what kind of treatment are effective are still without a consensus. From the literature review, the consequences of ADD without treatment and the effect on disk repositioning were summarized. The results showed that after ADD, condylar height was prone to reduce that may lead to or aggravate dentofacial deformities in adolescents. Disk repositioning could promote
