An orbital defect (congenital or acquired) causes severe facial asymmetry and disfigurement, which results in psychological and social disturbances to the patient. It becomes a challenging task for a maxillofacial prosthodontist to fabricate a prosthesis that replicates the healthy side of the face. Success of the prosthesis depends primarily on satisfactory retention of the same. This clinical report illustrates rehabilitation of a patient with an orbital defect by fabricating a hollow orbital prosthesis, utilizing anatomical undercuts for retention using an acrylic resin template relined by

Bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis of the jaws (BONJ) is reported frequently in patients receiving oral or intravenous bisphosphonates. To minimize potential complications, dental treatment must be performed with care. There are invasive and noninvasive treatment options for patients with active BONJ or a history of this complication. This clinical report describes the prosthodontic treatment of a patient who developed BONJ after receiving intravenous bisphosphonates (pamidronate). Because of the recurrent incidence of BONJ, noninvasive prosthetic therapy with telescopic overdentures and a h

BACKGROUND: Factors such as the manufacturing materials, shape or even the mechanical and thermal response of sitting Pressure Redistribution Support Surfaces (PRSS) can be potential contributors to pressure ulcers. However, few studies have compared a number of characteristics of the most frequently used devices.
OBJECTIVE: To compare three potential contributors to pressure ulcers in five commercial PRSS: pressure redistribution, temperature and perceived comfort.
METHOD: Study with a cross-over randomized design in healthy volunteer participants. Data was collected in a temperature and re

This study examined the intraoral changes of the elastic properties and roughness of a tissue conditioner after treatment with a fluorinated copolymer coating agent developed by the authors. The surface of the conditioner was treated with the agent on half of the internal surface of five maxillary complete dentures and was compared with the untreated half on the other side. The cushioning effects of the conditioners were evaluated by measuring the creep compliance strain-to-stress ratio. The value of compliance on the treated half was significantly greater than that on the untreated half. Ther

Lichen planus is a common inflammatory mucocutaneous disease that often manifests itself intraorally. Oral lichen planus can appear in many forms; the most significant form for the edentulous patient is the erosive variety. For the patient, wearing a complete denture is quite dramatic because of the friability of the tissue. Implant-supported overdentures are a predictable treatment for edentulous patients, but this has been discouraged for the patient with erosive lichen planus. This article describes 2 patients with oral erosive lichen planus who were successfully treated with implant-retain

This case report describes the oral rehabilitation of a patient with cleidocranial dysplasia who received a removable partial denture along with silicone-based permanent soft liner to improve esthetic and masticatory function. This patient was the candidate of neither implant nor orthodontic treatment due to medical conditions, history of mandible fracture, age, and risk of fracture after mandibular teeth extractions. Cone-beam computed tomography has made it possible to obtain comprehensive information regarding the morphology and positional relationship of impacted supernumerary teeth. Also,

Background and objective Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. The prevalence of mucormycosis, a progressive fungal infection affecting the nasal and paranasal sinuses, is also on the rise, especially in patients after COVID-19 treatment. Surgical resection frequently employed in these cases results in maxillary defects which lead to functional and aesthetic impairments. Obturator prostheses are used for the rehabilitation of these maxillofacial defects. However, the choice of material and design can have an impact on patient outcomes. The present study aims to compare the max

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Continuous bone resorption is the primary reason for complete denture relines. Because resorption rates vary, the frequency at which individuals require relines also varies. Currently, there are no predictors to identify individuals at risk of frequent relines or to guide clinicians in decisions related to relines.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this cross-sectional pilot study was to determine the utility of measuring bone metabolic markers (C-terminal telopeptide, osteocalcin, 25-OH hydroxy vitamin D) to predict the frequency of complete denture relines.

Oral submucous fibrosis is a premalignant condition in which rigidity of the lip, tongue, and palate results in reduced mouth opening and tongue movement. Limited mouth opening, mucosal rigidity, and reduced salivary flow makes prosthodontic procedures difficult in these patients and affects the stability, retention, and the support of removable prostheses. The burning sensation in the mouth that these patients experience reduces the tolerance to prostheses. We report a case of oral submucous fibrosis where the conventional neutral zone technique with certain modifications was utilized to reha

Rocatec, Kevloc and Siloc bonding systems were used to bond Molloplast-B silicone elastomer to a metal alloy denture base material. The mechanical strength of the bonds was examined using tensile tests. Two groups of tests were performed, 30 samples after one day storage in water and 30 samples after 6 months in water at 37 degrees C. At both testing times, the Rocatec system exhibited high reproducibility and the highest mean results. For the Kevloc system the values were lower while the Siloc system yielded the lowest values. The strength of samples, bonded with the Rocatec system, was impro

The hamster cheek pouch provides a suitable model system for the mucous-membrane irritation testing of dental materials. Poor retention of materials or difficulties in histopathological interpretation caused by surgical artifacts have been reported in published techniques. We describe a new "pouch-in-pouch" technique for mucous membrane irritation tests. The retention rate of polymer discs was 97% and 87% at 14 and 35 days, respectively. Clear differentiation was obtained between the tissue reaction to the test materials and the surgical procedure. Polymer discs containing dibutyltin diacetate

Zeolites and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are crystalline aluminosilicates with porous structure, which are closely linked with nanomaterials. They are characterized by enhanced ion exchange capacity, physical-chemical stability, thermal stability and biocompatibility, making them a promising material for dental applications. This review aimed to provide an overview of the application of zeolites and ZIFs in dentistry. The common zeolite compounds for dental application include silver zeolite, zinc zeolite, calcium zeolite and strontium zeolite. The common ZIFs for dental application
