Sweating away depression? The impact of intensive exercise on depression.

BACKGROUND: In periods of prolonged stress and pain the body produces endorphins to help endure pain. The PANIC system is built on the same pathways as the pain system and is characterized by behaviour that looks like depression. The term 'mental pain' in the context of feelings of loss is arguably justified in light of this relationship between the physical pain and social loss systems. It is reasonable to expect that endorphin release ameliorates depression. METHODS: Moderately depressed males (n=30) were randomly assigned to one of three groups of varying exercise intensity. Each underwent

[Effect of Postpartum Depression on Adolescent Depression of Mice Offspring].

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of postpartum depression (PPD) on adolescent depression of mice offspring. METHODS: Totally 48 Balb/c female mice were equally randomized into control group and stress group. Control group was not given any stress, whereas stress group were given chronic stress: constraining (6 h/d) combined with light stimulation for 24 hours (twice a week). The stress group was divided into 3 groups to measue the animals' behaviors immediately after modeling, three weeks after modeling, and three weeks after delivery to test whether the PPD models were successfully constructed

Differences between unipolar depression and bipolar II depression in women.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder II (BPII) and unipolar depression (UD) are both characterized by episodes of major depression (MDE), however DSM-IV criteria for MDE are identical, regardless of diagnosis. As a result, misdiagnosis of BP II and UD is common, leading to inappropriate treatment. Because women are twice as likely as men to experience MDE, differentiating UD from BP II in the context of depression is especially important for women. We examined symptoms and clinical features of MDE in women with UD and BPII to compare presentations of the two disorders in women. METHODS: We compared c

The Newcastle Child Depression Project. Diagnosis and classification of depression.

A total of 275 successive referrals to a university child psychiatry unit out-patient department were examined using the Child Depression Inventory. Of these, 95 children were examined further by a structured clinical interview, and the relationship between different instruments for the assessment of depression in childhood was investigated. Just over one-third of the children (35%) had significant depression, and it was found that depression may be missed unless children with other psychiatric diagnoses are examined closely. Multivariate analyses of the clinical data provided factorial valida

Primary non-endogenous depression and features attributed to reactive depression.

Primary non-endogenous depression was examined with respect to preceding life stress and instability of personality. A sample of 146 hospitalized patients suffering from primary endogenous depression, primary non-endogenous depression or depression secondary to a neurosis was interviewed for preceding personal loss and completed the Eysenck Personality Inventory after recovery. Presence of a preceding personal loss did not discriminate between the three types of depression. Only in personality patterns did primary non-endogenous depressives show features that have been attributed to reactive d

Differentiating anxiety and depression: the State-Trait Anxiety-Depression Inventory.

The differentiation of trait anxiety and depression in nonclinical and clinical populations is addressed. Following the tripartite model, it is assumed that anxiety and depression share a large portion of negative affectivity (NA), but differ with respect to bodily hyperarousal (specific to anxiety) and anhedonia (lack of positive affect; specific to depression). In contrast to the tripartite model, NA is subdivided into worry (characteristic for anxiety) and dysthymia (characteristic for depression), which leads to a four-variable model of anxiety and depression encompassing emotionality, wor

The vascular depression hypothesis: mechanisms linking vascular disease with depression.

The 'Vascular Depression' hypothesis posits that cerebrovascular disease may predispose, precipitate or perpetuate some geriatric depressive syndromes. This hypothesis stimulated much research that has improved our understanding of the complex relationships between late-life depression (LLD), vascular risk factors, and cognition. Succinctly, there are well-established relationships between LLD, vascular risk factors and cerebral hyperintensities, the radiological hallmark of vascular depression. Cognitive dysfunction is common in LLD, particularly executive dysfunction, a finding predictive of

Risk factors for antenatal depression, postnatal depression and parenting stress.

BACKGROUND: Given that the prevalence of antenatal and postnatal depression is high, with estimates around 13%, and the consequences serious, efforts have been made to identify risk factors to assist in prevention, identification and treatment. Most risk factors associated with postnatal depression have been well researched, whereas predictors of antenatal depression have been less researched. Risk factors associated with early parenting stress have not been widely researched, despite the strong link with depression. The aim of this study was to further elucidate which of some previously ident

A different depression: clinical distinctions between bipolar and unipolar depression.

Delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis can prolong the suffering of patients with bipolar disorder. Accurate early diagnosis is sometimes difficult, however, particularly because patients often present in the depressive phase, which can easily be mistaken for unipolar depression. Unfortunately, therapy appropriate for unipolar depression can increase the risk of manic switch or cycle acceleration in bipolar disorder, especially in those with a family history of bipolarity and suicide, although some antidepressants may be useful in some bipolar patients. In addition, most currently available mood st

Social adjustment in dysthymia, double depression and episodic major depression.

We contrasted the overall social functioning of pure dysthymics, double depressives, episodic major depressives and normal controls using both interview and self-report measures of social functioning and depression. In addition, we used hierarchical multiple regression to assess the differential impact of several variables (comorbid personality, anxiety and substance use disorders, life stress, duration of dysthymia and severity of depressive symptomatology) on social functioning in the dysthymics and double depressives. Participants included 41 outpatients with early-onset dysthymia alone, 56

[Depression and anxiety--a study for validating subtypes of depression].

Psychopathological analysis of the patterns of symptoms in 176 depressive in-patients disclosed in 73.3% of all patients the presence of anxiety symptoms: of these, 38.6% merely had diffuse anxiety, whereas 34.7% showed either additionally or alone specific anxiety symptoms such as phobias and panic attacks. Similar to the results obtained by dividing the patients into an "endogenous" and "neurotic" group, namely, that there was no difference between the subtypes in respect of triggering the depressive episodes by life events, or in respect of the suicide rate 30 months after discharge and in

Screening for depression in primary care. Development and validation of the Depression Scale, a screening instrument for depression.

Depression is a common mental disorder; effective methods for treating it are also available. Its recognition and diagnosis are prerequisite to effective treatment. A majority of depressed patients are generally managed in the primary care setting; only a half of the cases, however, are identified at their first visit. Screening instruments to improve recognition of depression have therefore been developed. The Depression Scale (DEPS), consisting of 10 items, was developed and tested in primary care patients aged 18 to 64 years. Clinical assessments were made on the basis of Present State Exam

Obesity and Depression.

Obesity and depression are common chronic conditions that have profound impacts on physical and mental health worldwide. Epidemiological studies increasingly demonstrate that these disorders frequently co-occur, and their comorbidity amplifies the risk of other chronic diseases. This comorbidity has a potential bidirectional relationship, and various psychological, sociodemographic, and lifestyle factors contribute to the association between obesity and depression. The first part examines how each condition may act as a risk factor for the other and explores methodological issues in existing r

Is Depression Dialyzable?

Depression is a common and debilitating comorbidity in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly those with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD, CKD stage 5). This association stems from a complex interplay of biological and psychosocial factors, including the accumulation of uraemic toxins such as middle molecules, chronic inflammation, and the psychological burden of disease progression. Initiation of dialysis has been observed to alleviate depressive symptoms through multiple mechanisms: removal of uraemic toxins, improvement in physical health, and reduction in psychosocial stres

Neuroimmunology of depression.

Depression is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and a major contributor to the global burden of disease, yet the cellular and molecular etiology of depression remain largely unknown. Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is associated with a variety of chronic physical inflammatory and autoimmune disorders, and mood disorders may act synergistically with other medical disorders to worsen patient outcomes. Here, we outline the neuroimmune complement, explore the evidence for altered immune system function in MDD, and present some of the potential mechanisms by which immune cells and m

Postpartum Respiratory Depression.

Postpartum respiratory depression is a complex, multifactorial issue that encompasses a patient's baseline preexisting conditions, certain pregnancy-specific conditions or complications, as well as the iatrogenic element of various medications given in the peripartum period. In this review, we discuss many of these factors including obesity, sleep-disordered breathing, chronic lung disease, neuromuscular disorders, opioids, preeclampsia, peripartum cardiomyopathy, postpartum hemorrhage, amniotic fluid embolism, sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and medications such as analges

Magnesium and depression.

Magnesium is one of the most important elements in the human body and is involved in a number of biochemical processes crucial for the proper functioning of the cardiovascular, alimentary, endocrine, and osteoarticular systems. It also plays a vital modulatory role in brain biochemistry, influencing several neurotransmission pathways associated with the development of depression. Personality changes, including apathy, depression, agitation, confusion, anxiety, and delirium are observed when there is a deficiency of this element. Rodents receiving a diet deficient in magnesium displayed depress

[Depression and burnout].

Burnout is not a psychiatric diagnosis but a concept of the occupational psychology concerning the impact of working conditions on the psyche of affected persons. Burnout can be a mediator for clinical depression. Severe burnout fulfills mostly the criteria for an adjustment disorder. The treating physician is supposed to clarify the causes of a burnout. In addition to the causes related to working conditions, the role of certain personality traits should be elucidated. Psychological/psychotherapeutic approaches preferably focus on stress reduction. Empirical evidence for these approaches is r
