A polysomnographic study of sleep disturbance in community elderly with self-reported environmental chemical odor intolerance.

Subjective sleep complaints and food intolerances, especially to milk products, are frequent symptoms of individuals who also report intolerance for low-level odors of various environmental chemicals. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the objective nature of nocturnal sleep patterns during different diets, using polysomnography in community older adults with self-reported illness from chemical odors. Those high in chemical odor intolerance (n = 15) exhibited significantly lower sleep efficiency (p = .005) and lower rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep percent (p = .04), with a trend t

Influence of intrathoracic vagotomy on the cough reflex in the anesthetized cat.

Recurrent laryngeal afferent fibers are primarily responsible for cough in response to mechanical or chemical stimulation of the upper trachea and larynx in the guinea pig. Lower airway slowly adapting receptors have been proposed to have a permissive effect on the cough reflex. We hypothesized that vagotomy below the recurrent laryngeal nerve branch would depress mechanically or chemically induced cough. In anesthetized, bilaterally thoracotomized, artificially ventilated cats, thoracic vagotomy nearly eliminated cough induced by mechanical stimulation of the intrathoracic airway, significant

A Pilot Study To Define Chemical Coping in Cancer Patients Using the Delphi Method.

BACKGROUND: "Chemical coping" is a commonly used term in the pain and palliative care literature, but is heterogeneously defined. We conducted a Delphi survey among palliative care and pain specialists internationally to identify a consensus definition for "chemical coping with opioids" and warning signs for chemical coping. METHODS: This Delphi survey consisted of two rounds on the following: (1) concepts and definition related to chemical coping, (2) warning signs for chemical coping, and (3) demographics. Consensus in this study was defined as agreement by a minimum of 70% of the experts.

"Medicine Is Awesome": A Critical Look at the Factors That Shape Thinking About Depression and Its Treatment.

No longer are prolonged sadness and despondency, with their effects on day-to-day functioning, conceived of as a response to someone's internal world or external environment. Instead, the syndrome has been elevated to a medical disorder-depression-explained as a chemical imbalance in the nervous system that requires medication to rebalance these chemicals. How did we arrive at this modern state of affairs? While the answer to this question is complex and has been hotly debated, one thing is certain: This relatively new explanation of depression as a neurochemical imbalance leads to the current

Inhibition of prolactin secretion by low-dose dopamine infusion in patients with hyperprolactinaemia.

Dopamine inhibits the secretion of prolactin from the pituitary. We have examined the relation between plasma dopamine and serum prolactin in 12 patients with hyperprolactinaemia during the infusion of dopamine at low doses (0.01, 0.1 and 1 microgram/kg/min). Plasma dopamine levels were raised from less than 100 pg/ml at the lowest rate of infusion to more than 20 000 pg/ml at the highest. Suppression of prolactin secretion was seen in some patients even at the lowest rate of infusion (0.01 microgram/kg/min); marked suppression of prolactin secretion (60%; 17--83%) was found at the intermediat

OBscure but not OBsolete: Perturbations of the frontal cortex in common between rodent olfactory bulbectomy model and major depression.

Olfactory bulbectomy (OBX) has been used as a model of depression over several decades. This model presupposes a mechanism that is still not proven in clinical depression. A wealth of clinical literature has focused on the derangements in frontal cortex (prefrontal, orbitofrontal and anterior cingulate cortices) associated with depression. In this comprehensive review, anatomical, electrophysiological and molecular sequelae of bulbectomy in the rodent frontal cortex are explored and compared with findings on brains of humans with major depression. Certain commonalities in neurobiological featu

Verbal and non-verbal recall by depressed and euthymic affective patients.

This study uses matched-tasks methodology in order to test memory function in depressed and euthymic patients with major affective disorder. Neither drug-free depressed patients nor lithium-treated euthymic patients show a differential deficit in verbal versus non-verbal recall. However, while euthymic patients show no memory impairment, drug-free depressives do show poor memory functioning. The results support the view that memory deficits observed in affective patients in the depressed state are transient, secondary manifestations of depression and are neither indicative of underlying organi

The activity of glutamatergic neurons in the dorsal-ventral poles of the dentate gyrus regulates distinct phenotypes of depression in mice.

Depression is a heterogeneous mental disorder. The dorsal and/or ventral dentate gyrus (DG) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of depression. However, it remains unclear whether the activities of glutamatergic neurons in the dorsal and ventral DG contribute to the heterogeneity of depression. In the present study, we conduct a series of depression-related behavior tests by activating or inhibiting the activity of glutamatergic neurons in the dorsal and ventral DG using chemical genetic methods. It is found that inhibiting the dorsal DG glutamatergic neurons induces social deficits, as

Pathogenesis of depression and the potential for traditional Chinese medicine treatment.

Depression is a prevalent mental disorder that significantly diminishes quality of life and longevity, ranking as one of the primary causes of disability globally. Contemporary research has explored the potential pathogenesis of depression from various angles, encompassing genetics, neurotransmitter systems, neurotrophic factors, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, inflammation, and intestinal flora, among other contributing factors. In addition, conventional chemical medications are plagued by delayed onset of action, persistent adverse effects, and restricted therapeutic efficacy. In li

Gut microbiota: Linking nutrition and perinatal depression.

Perinatal depression is a mood disorder that is reported in women during pregnancy (prenatal) and after childbirth (postnatal). The onset of perinatal depression is associated with changes in reproductive hormones, stress hormones and neurosteroids. These chemical compounds can be modulated by the gut microbiota, which may affect maternal mental health during the perinatal period via the gut-brain-axis. Recent studies suggest that nutritional and dietary interventions (vitamin D, ω-3 fatty acids, iron, and fiber) effectively prevent or mitigate maternal depression and anxiety, but their effica

[Mechanisms of action of class III anti-arrhythmia agents].

Vaughan-Williams class III antiarrhythmic agents act mainly by prolonging the duration of the cardiac action potential and, thus, the refractory period. This effect may be obtained: 1) by increasing the inward sodium or calcium currents, which may lead to an intracellular calcium overload and induce a very proarrhythmic situation, or 2) by decreasing the outward potassium currents, the objective of the new class III antiarrhythmic drugs under development. They selectively block one or several potassium channels regulated by the membrane potential (transient outward current Ito, delayed rectify

Prenatal exposure to a mixture of organochlorines and metals and internalizing symptoms in childhood and adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Although prenatal chemical exposures influence neurobehavior, joint exposures are not well explored as risk factors for internalizing disorders through adolescence. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate associations of prenatal organochlorine and metal exposures, considered individually and as a mixture, with mid-childhood and adolescent internalizing symptoms. METHODS: Participants were 468 children from a prospective cohort recruited at birth (1993-1998) in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Methods and clinical significance of studying chemical drives.

Studying chemical control of ventilation implies evaluation of both chemoreceptor functions taken into account however the mechanical factors influencing the effector organs. The role of abnormal chemical drives has been demonstrated in COPD patients. More recently the role of abnormal chemical drives was studied during sleep. Absent or severely depressed drives may facilitate the development of central apneas and hypoventilation. High drives may lead to periodic breathing eventually with central apneas as well. Most intriguing therefore is the role of chemical drives in the pathogenesis of th

INTRODUCTION: Cinnarizine is a calcium-entry blocker drug used in vertiginous disorders; among its most rare adverse effects appear extrapyramidal symptoms and depression, these effects can persist during weeks, months or years after the withdrawal of the drug and have been explained by the inhibition of the passage of calcium in striatal neurons and a direct antidopaminergic features because of the similar chemical structure with neuroleptic drugs. Clinical case. A case of cinnarizine-induced akathisia, parkinsonism and depression in a 25 years-old patient after 11 days of treatment is descri
