[Dynamics of various blood electrolytes in patients with Menière's disease after desiccation].

The serum concentrations of Na, K, Ca, and Cl were measured in 25 patients with Meniere's disease. In the patients with hydrops, the concentrations of K, Ca, and Cl were initially increased and during dehydration slightly decreased. In the patients without hydrops, the concentration of K and Ca was near the upper limit and that of Cl was within normal limits. No specific patterns of variations of C, Ca, Cl concentrations were detected in the patients without hydrops. The K:Cl, Ca:Cl and K:Ca ratios were stable in the patients without hydrops and unstable in the patients with hydrops. They depe

A desiccation compound as a biofilm- and necrosis-removing agent: a case series.

OBJECTIVE: A new compound, Debrichem (DEBx Medical BV, the Netherlands), a topical desiccation agent (TDA), is an active gel that contains an acidic species with a potent hygroscopic action. When in contact with microorganisms and necrosis, rapid desiccation and carbonisation of the proteins in these microorganisms, as well as of the extracellular matrix of biofilms and necrosis, occurs. The resulting 'precipitate' rapidly dislodges from the wound bed, resulting in a clean wound which granulates, which is a prerequisite for healing by secondary intention. METHOD: In a retrospective study, a s

Factors predicting the ocular surface response to desiccating environmental stress.

PURPOSE: To identify factors predicting the ocular surface response to experimental desiccating stress. METHODS: The ocular surfaces of both eyes of 15 normal and 10 dry eye subjects wearing goggles were exposed to a controlled desiccating environment (15%-25% relative humidity and 2-5 L/min airflow) for 90 minutes. Eye irritation symptoms, blink rate, tear meniscus dimensions, noninvasive (RBUT) and invasive tear break-up time, and corneal fluorescein and conjunctival lissamine green-dye staining were recorded before and after desiccating stress. Pre- and postexposure measurements were compa

The role of active oxygen in the response of plants to water deficit and desiccation.

Water deficits cause a reduction in the rate of photosynthesis. Exposure to mild water deficits, when relative water content (RWC) remains above 70%, primarily causes limitation to carbon dioxide uptake because of stomatal closure. With greater water deficits, direct inhibition of photosynthesis occurs. In both cases limitation of carbon dioxide fixation results in exposure of chloroplasts to excess excitation energy. Much of this can be dissipated by various photoprotective mechanisms. These include dissipation as heat via carotenoids, photorespiration, CAM idling and, in some species, leaf m

ESKAPE Gram-negative bacteria escape culture-based detection upon desiccation on abiotic surfaces.

ESKAPE bacteria, namely Enterococcus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp., are leading causes of hospital-acquired infections and a major therapeutic challenge due to multidrug resistance. Hospital surfaces and medical devices are critical reservoirs for the transmission of these pathogens to patients. Standard methods for detecting microorganisms in the hospital environment are culture-based, so they cannot identify bacteria in the viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state. VBNC bacteria remain metabolically ac

CYP4G100 contributes to desiccation resistance by mediating cuticular hydrocarbon synthesis in Bactrocera dorsalis.

The oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) is expanding its distribution to higher latitudes. Our goal in this study was to understand how B. dorsalis adapts to higher latitude environments that are more arid than tropical regions. Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) on the surface of the epicuticle in insects act as a hydrophobic barrier against water loss. The essential decarbonylation reaction in CHC synthesis is catalysed by CYP4G, a cytochrome P450 subfamily protein. Hence, in B. dorsalis it is necessary to clarify the function of the CYP4G gene and its role in desiccation resistance.

Hemolysin III drives neuroinvasion and meningitis while impacting desiccation resilience in Cronobacter sakazakii.

UNLABELLED: Cronobacter sakazakii is an emerging pathogen associated with severe neonatal diseases, including meningitis. Its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is critical for meningitis development, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigates the role of Hemolysin III (Hly III), encoded by the ESA_00432, in neuroinvasion and environmental resilience. A markerless deletion of ESA_00432 (ΔESA_00432) revealed that the mutant exhibited unaltered biofilm formation, increased hydrophilicity, and enhanced desiccation resistance compared to the wild type, sugges

Poly 2-methacryloyloxyethyl Phosphorylcholine Protects Corneal Cells and Contact Lenses from Desiccation Damage.

SIGNIFICANCE: Contact lens (CL) wearing may cause discomfort and eye dryness. We describe here the efficacy of a synthetic polymer in protecting both the corneal epithelial cells and the CL from desiccation damage. Artificial tears containing this polymer might be helpful to treat or prevent ocular surface damage in CL wearers. PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the protective effects of the synthetic polymer 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (poly-MPC) on corneal epithelial cells and CLs subjected to desiccation damage. METHODS: The interaction of poly-MPC with the cell membrane was ev

Growing Safe: Acute Size Escape from Desiccation in Juvenile Crepipatella peruviana (Mollusca: Gastropoda).

Desiccation is an important limiting factor in the intertidal zone. Generally decreasing seaward, desiccation stress can also be alleviated in wet microhabitats. Juvenile snails are generally more susceptible to desiccation than adults, and, for some species, juveniles must therefore hide in microhabitats to survive emersion. The transition from hiding in safe microhabitats to being able to survive fully exposed for the duration of low tide is not well documented. In this study, we investigated the influence of size on desiccation tolerance in juveniles of the calyptraeid gastropod Crepipatell

Listeria monocytogenes ability to survive desiccation: Influence of serotype, origin, virulence, and genotype.

Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that is responsible for listeriosis, is a very diverse species. Desiccation resistance has been rarely studied in L. monocytogenes, although it is a stress that is largely encountered by this microorganism in food-processing environments and that could be managed to prevent its presence. The objective of this study was to evaluate the resistance of 30 L. monocytogenes strains to moderate desiccation (75% relative humidity) and evaluate the correlation of such resistance with the strains' virulence, serotype and genotype. The results showed a great heterogene

The desiccation tolerant secrets of Selaginella lepidophylla: what we have learned so far?

Selaginella lepidophylla is a desiccation tolerant plant able to survive complete vegetative tissue dehydration and revive ('resurrect') in water conditions. Vegetative desiccation tolerance is an adaptive feature acquired by S. lepidophylla to withstand the long dry periods in its natural habitat, the Chihuahuan desert. Understanding the molecular basis of its drought stress tolerance may be of great benefit to help in developing novel strategies for improvement of drought stress tolerance in crops. Ecophysiological Responses of the Lesser Mealworm Alphitobius diaperinus Exposed to Desiccating Conditions.

In order to improve predictions of the impacts of climate change on insects, this study aimed to uncover how exposure to dry conditions can affect the biology of the invasive pest beetle Alphitobius diaperinus in terms of longevity, activity, water content, metabolic profiles, and fecundity. We measured desiccation resistance in adults of A. diaperinus by recording the time the beetles could survive desiccation stress. We found that the species was highly desiccation resistant, with about 50% of the insects exposed to desiccation being able to survive for 30 days, and some individuals even sur

Desiccation tolerance as a driver of environmental persistence and transmission in nosocomial bacterial pathogens.

Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) represent a major global health burden, leading to increased patient morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. These infections frequently occur following patient contact with microbial pathogens persisting on indwelling devices and other abiotic surfaces in the hospital environment. A key driver of this persistence is the ability to survive the total loss of water, a phenomenon known as desiccation tolerance. While desiccation tolerance has been studied across various kingdoms of life, comparatively little is known about the molecular mechanisms that enab

Survival of Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is Enhanced Under Desiccated Culture Conditions.

Streptococcus pyogenes or Group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections are the leading cause of bacterial tonsillopharyngitis. The bacterium can survive and persist within the human host for a long time as it is observed in up to 40% of the population who are considered as carriers. Recurrent tonsillopharyngitis is a particular problem in children which is caused either by relapses due to failed bacterial clearance or by reinfection. A prolonged survival in tonsillar crypts or on inanimate surfaces might be sources for reinfection. We therefore examined 64 clinical GAS isolates from children with to
