Desmoid tumor after resection of cerebellar hemangioblastoma.

Desmoid tumors are histologically benign but locally invasive tumors that rarely can occur in the head and neck. In this article, we illustrate a rare case of desmoid tumor formation in intracranial posterior fossa after suboccipital craniotomy for hemangioblastoma. A 43-year-old woman presented with headaches, dizziness, equilibrium disorders, nausea, and vomiting due to a hemangioblastoma in posterior fossa. A gross total resection was achieved. Three years postoperatively, the patient developed a growing mass at the intracranial intradural regions in posterior fossa near the previous incisi

Reporting an unusual case of mesenteric desmoid tumor.

A 51-year-old male patient with no history of medical illnesses presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain and a temperature of 39 degrees Celsius. His condition deteriorated rapidly within a few hours. Clear signs of acute abdomen, raised white blood cell count and small gas-fluid levels on abdominal X ray prompted an urgent CT scan of the abdomen. The latter revealed a space occupying lesion arising from the central mesentery containing gas-fluid levels measuring approximately 9 x 9 cm. An urgent exploratory laparotomy was performed. This revealed a mesenteric mass measuring 1

[A case of desmoid tumor involving the posterior mediastinum].

A 36-year-old woman visited our department because of back pain. Chest CT showed the 35 x 20 mm mass to be located in the left posterior mediastinum. Neurogenic tumor or pulmonary sequestration was suspected. We followed the tumor for 2 years, chest CT revealed an increase in size. En bloc resection of the tumor was performed. The tumor originated in the posterior mediastinum, protruded into the thoracic cavity and adhered to the left lower lobe and invaded the diaphragm, measuring 65 x 50 x 25 mm in size. This tumor was diagnosed pathologically as desmoid tumor which showed proliferation of s

Graft pseudoaneurysm simulating desmoid tumor recurrence.

A desmoid tumor is a rare neoplasm of soft tissues and, although benign, is locally invasive and tends to recur. We report a case of suspected recurrence of a supraclavicular desmoid tumor that had been resected 2 years earlier. Computed tomography suggested the correct diagnosis of a pseudoaneurysm of a venous graft that had been placed during the resection.

[Extra-abdominal desmoid tumor--report of a case].

A case of an extra-abdominal desmoid tumor in a 17-year-old female is reported. At the time of the first examination, the tumor was found to already involve the floor of the mouth, the submandibular region, both sides of the neck, the anterior chest wall and the mediastinum and hence was considered inoperable. The patient was treated by external irradiation and interstitial irradiation (Ir and Au). The therapeutic response was very slow, becoming noticeable 4 months after completion of the therapy and lasting for more than a year. Experience in this case indicates that in order for radiotherap

Intrathoracic Desmoid Tumor Presenting as Multiple Lung Nodules 13 Years after Previous Resection of Abdominal Wall Desmoid Tumor.

Desmoid tumors are rare soft tissue tumors considered to have locally infiltrative features without distant metastasis until now. Although they are most commonly intraabdominal, very few cases have extra-abdominal locations. The origin of intrathoracic desmoid tumors is predominantly the chest wall with occasional involvement of pleura. True intrathoracic primary desmoid tumors with no involvement of the chest wall or pleura are extremely rare. We recently experienced a case of true intrathoracic desmoid tumor presenting as multiple lung nodules at 13 years after resection of a previous intraa

Breast Sarcomas, Phyllodes Tumors, and Desmoid Tumors: Epidemiology, Diagnosis, Staging, and Histology-Specific Management Considerations.

Breast sarcomas arise from connective tissues of the breast and account for fewer than 1% of all breast malignancies. They can be subclassified as primary breast sarcomas, which arise de novo and are histologically diverse, and secondary breast sarcomas, which arise as a result of radiation or lymphedema and are most commonly angiosarcomas. Two other connective tissue neoplasms that occur within the breast include phyllodes tumors and desmoid tumors, which exhibit a spectrum of behaviors. Malignant phyllodes tumors are biologically similar to primary breast sarcomas, whereas desmoid tumors are

Disease and economic burden of surgery in desmoid tumors: a review.

INTRODUCTION: Desmoid tumors (DT) are soft-tissue tumors that infiltrate into surrounding structures with ill-defined margins. Although surgery is a potential treatment option, complete excision with negative margins is not often possible, the postsurgery recurrence rate is high, and surgery can result in disfigurement and/or loss of function. AREAS COVERED: We conducted a literature review to assess the burden of surgery in patients with DT, focusing on recurrence rates and functional deficits resulting from surgeries. Since economic data related to DT surgery is lacking, reviews of surgery

Multimodality imaging features of desmoid tumors: a head-to-toe spectrum.

Desmoid tumors (DTs) are a rare and biologically heterogeneous group of locally aggressive fibroblastic neoplasm: their biological behavior spectrum ranges from indolent to aggressive tumors. DTs are classified as intra-abdominal, extra-abdominal, and within the abdominal wall lesions. It is well known that abdominal and extra-abdominal DTs are associated with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and Gardner syndrome. Possible risk factors are prior trauma/surgery, pregnancy, and oral contraceptives. There was a real revolution in the management of DT: from aggressive first-line approach (surger

Old Drug, New Data: Broadening the Therapeutic Armamentarium for Desmoid Tumors.

Desmoid tumors are a locally invasive neoplasm that can exhibit unpredictable clinical behavior. Although treatment options are numerous, few are supported by level 1 evidence. A recent phase III trial evaluated the efficacy of long-used pegylated liposomal doxorubicin in patients with progressive desmoid tumors. See related article by Xu et al., p. 2198.

Reexamining Multisystem Desmoid Tumors Linked to Gardner's Syndrome: A Clinical Case.

A variation of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), known as Gardner's syndrome (GS), can manifest as extraintestinal tumors, such as desmoid tumors (DTs). A key part in the diagnosing process is played by the clinician. Because DT frequently occurs before intestinal polyposis develops, doctors can identify the underlying illness early by looking for DT's telltale signs. Nevertheless, in this instance, the patient's failure to recognize the illness promptly following the excision of the tumor in the abdomen wall caused a delay in the diagnosis and impacted the disease's course.

Desmoid Tumors of the Foot: A Retrospective Study of Four Patients.

BACKGROUND: Desmoid-type fibromatosis (DF) is an aggressive (myo)fibroblastic neoplasm with an infiltrative growth pattern and a tendency for local recurrence. It is rarely seen at the foot. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze clinical presentation, therapy, and outcomes in a consecutive series of four patients with DF at the foot. METHODS: From 1994 to 2014, four patients had been surgically treated. The resection margin was marginal or even intralesional in all. One patient already had local recurrence at first presentation. The end point was either local recurrence or progre

Radiofrequency ablation: another treatment option for local control of desmoid tumors.

Desmoid tumors are fibrous neoplasms that are infiltrative and locally aggressive. Although they are histologically benign with negligible metastatic potential, recurrence after surgical resection is common. Pharmacotherapy and radiation treatment have been utilized when surgery has been considered unsuitable. Since April 2003, we have used radiofrequency ablation to treat five desmoid tumors in four patients. Complications were seen in two patients; one patient had cellulitis and another had soft tissue necrosis. Clinical follow-up was available for all four patients and ranged from 4-68 mont

Desmoid tumors of the right rectus abdominus muscle in postpartum women.

BACKGROUND: Desmoid tumors are benign neoplasms that most often arise from muscle aponeurosis and have been associated with both trauma and pregnancy. The etiology of desmoids has not been determined. CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS: We present here four almost identical cases with desmoids occurring in the same location, the right rectus abdominus muscle in young post partum females. All were over the age of 30 at the time of diagnosis. Three of them had previously used oral contraceptive agents for an average of 3 years. None had a history of trauma to the area of involvement. Three had early surg

CT of intraabdominal desmoid tumors: is the tumor different in patients with Gardner's disease?

OBJECTIVE: A retrospective study of abdominal CT scans of patients with proved intraabdominal desmoid tumors was done to determine if any objective characteristics exist to differentiate desmoids related to Gardner's syndrome from isolated desmoids. Because the desmoid tumors of Gardner's syndrome can predate the diagnosis of Gardner's syndrome, it would be helpful to know which patients with desmoids need careful follow-up studies as well as initial workup for Gardner's syndrome and all its ramifications. Also, it would be important to differentiate benign from malignant desmoids associated w

[A case of abdominal desmoid tumor that was difficult to differentiate from urachal tumor].

A 76-year-old male patient complained of frequent urination. Computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging scans revealed a heterogeneous mass involving his bladder, prostate and Sigmoid colon. He was diagnosed with an invasive urachal tumor and surgery was performed due to severe tumor adhesion to adjacent organs. Partial resection of the tumor was performed with partial cystectomy and sigmoidectomy. A post-operative pathological diagnosis revealed the tumor was a desmoid abdominal wall tumor. The desmoid abdominal wall tumor was not easily differentiated preoperatively from an urachal

Breast Sarcomas, Phyllodes Tumors, and Desmoid Tumors: Turning the Magnifying Glass on Rare and Aggressive Entities.

Breast sarcomas (BSs), phyllodes tumors (PTs), and desmoid tumors (DTs) are rare entities that arise from connective tissue. BSs can be classified as either primary or secondary, whether they develop de novo or after radiation exposure or lymphedema. PIK3CA seems to play an important common role in different BS. Malignant PTs show similar behavior to BSs, while DTs are locally aggressive but rarely metastasize. BSs usually present as unilateral, painless, rapidly growing masses with rare nodal involvement. The diagnosis should be based on magnetic resonance imaging and a core needle biopsy. St

Postoperative thoracic paraspinal desmoid tumor: illustrative case.

BackgroundDesmoid-type fibromatosis is a rare soft tissue tumor characterized by invasive growth within deep connective tissue without metastasis. The etiology is largely unknown, but several cases have been reported in the postoperative setting. The management is multidisciplinary and largely dependent on individual presentation. Here the authors report a postoperative case of a rapidly progressive and symptomatic paraspinal desmoid tumor (DT).ObservationsA 51-year-old female with a history of familial adenomatous polyposis and a previous L3-5 decompressive laminectomy and fusion presented to

Giant desmoid tumor of the abdominal wall: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Desmoid tumors are a rare type of benign fibromatosis. Patients often present with a painless abdominal mass. Here, we report a case of a giant desmoid tumor of the abdominal wall that was successfully treated with wide local excision. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 48-year-old female who developed an abdominal mass over the past year. Imaging revealed a well-circumscribed mass on the left side of the abdomen, which was treated with wide local excision. Immunohistochemical analysis of the specimen confirmed the diagnosis of a desmoid tumor. The patien
