Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by chronic hyperglycaemia due to an absolute or relative lack of insulin. The disease mainly affects the nervous system, and the urological complications themselves develop on the basis of these disorders. Urological patients with diabetes present in ambulance with manifestations of common urological diseases, but also suffer from complications of the urinary system or genital organs that are specific for diabetic patient. Usually, these complications go unrecognized for a long time or manifest only non-specifically. But they are often life-threaten

Diabetes mellitus (DM) in pregnancy imposes increased risks for the pregnant person, fetus, and infant, which includes miscarriage, congenital anomalies, accelerated fetal growth, iatrogenic prematurity, preeclampsia, delivery-related trauma, cesarean section, neonatal hypoglycemia, and respiratory distress syndrome. Preconceptual counseling for people with type 1 or type 2 DM who are contemplating pregnancy includes education about these risks, and optimization of glucose control. Fetal screening early in pregnancy in persons with type 1 or type 2 DM allows for early diagnosis and therapy opt

Peripheral artery occlusive disease is a prevalent but underdiagnosed manifestation in patients with diabetes and also in patients with diabetic foot ulceration. There is insufficient awareness of its clinical manifestations, including intermittent claudication and critical limb ischemia and of its risk of adverse limb outcomes. This review aims to highlight essential elements of the prevalence of peripheral artery disease in patients with diabetes and the the pathway of clinical diagnosis. We report the actual standards and evidence based, interdisciplinary management including conservative,

It has been shown that diabetic patients have bone fragility independent of bone mineral density. Recently, diabetes-related bone disease is recognized as one of diabetic complications. It is reported that advanced glycation end products(AGEs)collagen cross-links, low bone turnover with osteoblastic dysfunction, and abnormality of microarchitectures such as cortical porosity and deterioration of trabecular bone structure are involved in diabetes-related bone disease. AGEs and homocysteine directly and negatively affect osteoblasts and osteocytes. Moreover, anti-diabetic drugs also affect bone

Diabetes mellitus, particularly type 2 diabetes, is a risk factor for dementia and this holds true for incident vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Cerebrovascular complications of diabetes and chronic mild inflammation in insulin resistant states partly account for this increased risk. In addition, cellular resistance to the trophic effects of insulin on neurons and glial cells favor the accumulation of toxic metabolic products, such as amyloid and hyperphosphorylated tau protein (pTau). Weight loss frequently precedes overt cognitive symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. This results in an

INTRODUCTION: Transplant physicians have tried to avoid graft rejection and early graft loss for many years. However, physicians are now aware about improving long-term kidney and patient survival, a challenge that needs to focus on cardiovascular risk management. One major contributor of this risk is the development of posttransplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM).
AREAS COVERED: We performed a literature search based on PubMed, covering prevalence, risk factors, prevention and treatment of PTDM.
EXPERT OPINION: We need good quality clinical trials on PTDM prevention and management. In addition,

Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been proposed as a risk factors for the development of vascular dementia (VaD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). We characterized a new clinical entity of a dementia subgroup associated with specific DM-related factors rather than with AD pathology or vascular disease. This type of dementia, not showing hypoperfusion in the parietotemporal lobe on SPECT or cerebrovascular lesions on MRI, was characterized by old age, high hemoglobin A1c level, long duration of diabetes, high frequency of insulin therapy, low frequency of apolipoprotein E 4 carrier, less severe medial tem

Growing epidemiologic evidence has suggested that people with diabetes mellitus are at an increased risk for the development of dementia. However, the results for the subtypes of dementia are inconsistent. This review examines the risk of dementia in people with diabetes mellitus, and discusses the possible mechanism underpinning this association. Diabetes mellitus is associated with a 1.5- to 2.5-fold greater risk of dementia among community-dwelling elderly people. Notably, diabetes mellitus is a significant risk factor for not only vascular dementia, but also Alzheimer's disease. The mechan

Neonatal diabetes mellitus is a rare condition (1/90,000 to 1/260,000 live births) defined as mild-to-severe hyperglycemia within the first year of life. Permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus requires lifelong therapy, whereas transient form resolves early in life but may relapse later on. Two main physiopathological mechanisms may explain this disease: β cell functional impairment or absence (pancreas agenesis or β cells destruction). The main genetic causes of β cells impairment are 6q24 abnormalities and mutations in ABCC8 or KCNJ11 potassium channel (KATP channel) genes. Compared to the KAT

PURPOSE: To assess the relationship between age and the incidence and severity of pinguecula in patients with diabetes mellitus, and to compare the grade of pinguecula between control subjects and patients with diabetes.
METHODS: A total of 160 patients with type 2 diabetes aged 31 to 70 years (DM group) and 160 control subjects aged 31 to 70 years (control group) were enrolled. The grade of pinguecula at 2 locations (nasal and temporal) was assessed in all subjects by a grading system.
RESULTS: There was an age-related increase in the grade of pinguecula in both the DMgroup (r = 0.52; P < 0

To determine the prevalence of post-kidney transplantation diabetes (PTDM) and to assess its risk factors, we retrospectively studied 92 non-diabetic kidney transplant patients. The immunosuppressive drugs used to prevent rejection included prednisone, a calcineurin inhibitor (cyclosporine or tacrolimus) and an antimetabolite (azathioprine or mycofenolate mofetil). Diabetes was defined according to the WHO criteria and the American Diabetes Association. The mean age of our patients was 35.8 ± 10.5 years, and there was a clear male predominance (56 men and 36 women). The graft was from living r

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, sexual dysfunction and periodontal disease. Improvements in glycaemic control may help to reduce the risk of these complications. Several animal studies show that cinnamon may be effective in improving glycaemic control. While these effects have been explored in humans also, findings from these studies have not yet been systematically reviewed.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of cinnamon in patients with diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal diabetes is a rare cause of hyperglycemia, affecting 1: 500,000 births, with persistent hyperglycemia occurring in the first months of life lasting more than 2 weeks and requiring insulin. This condition in infants less than 6 months of age is considered as permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus.
CASE REPORT: A rare case of permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus presented with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR; birth weight: 1460 grams; female), hyperglycemia, glycosuria, and mild dehydration, a normal Apgar score of 8 and 9 at 1 and 5 minutes, respectively. The parents,

Most studies, which are retrospective, show contradictory results regarding the incidence of road traffic accident among diabetic patients. The most frequent cause of accident is hypoglycemia. One should also consider impaired vision (retinopathy, maculopathy), neuropathy (feet insensitivity) and sleep apnoea in overweight patients. Hypoglycemia not only leads to impaired judgement during driving, but also to a reduction in performances, frequent hypoglycemias impair symptom recognition and increase the risk of loss of consciousness. Patients should benefit from teaching about hypoglycemia, i.

The clinical and epidemiological importance of cardiovascular diseases, has increased rapidly in recent years. Diabetes mellitus which serves as a basis for the development of atherosclerosis, are induced by a genetic predisposition coupled with environmental factors. Hypernutrition and insufficient exercise lead to diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, obesity, and insulin resistance in individuals genetically predisposed to these disorders, which eventually produce ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. The report of the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial (MRFIT)

Diabetes mellitus is the most common medical complication of pregnancy and it carries a significant risk to the foetus and the mother. Congenital malformations and perinatal morbidity remain common compared with the offspring of non diabetic pregnancies. Diabetic mothers are at risk of progression of microvascular diabetic complications as well as early pregnancy loss, pre-eclampsia, polyhydramnios and premature labour. Glycaemic control before and during pregnancy is critical and the benefit may result in a viable, healthy off spring. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) which manifests for th

Patients in various clinical states of diabetes mellitus (according to the recommendation of the American Diabetes Association) as a primary diagnosis were examined for fungal infections by Candida species. Candida spp. were detected in urine, in the material taken from the mouth cavity, nails, skin lesions, ears and eyes, by cultivation on the Sabouraud agar, CHROMagar Candida, and by saccharide assimilation. In the group of diabetics with symptoms of oral candidiasis and denture stomatitis C. albicans was identified in 8 cases, C. tropicalis in 3, C. parapsilosis in 2; 1 strain of C. guillie

Post-transplantation diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is defined as sustained hyperglycemia developing in any patient without history of diabetes before transplantation, that meets the current diagnostic criteria by the American Diabetes Association or the World Health Organization. Several risk factors have been identified: age, nonwhite ethnicity, and glucocorticoid therapy for rejection and chronic immunosuppression with cyclosporine and especially tacrolimus. The pathophysiology of this condition resembles that of type 2 diabetes mellitus: pretransplantation end-stage liver/renal and heart disease
