Primary tuberculosis of the diaphysis of long bones is extremely rare. In the last 27 years (1955-1982) we observed one female patient with this infection in the shaft of the right femur and one male patient with symmetrical involvement of the tibiae in our Clinic. In both cases, the diagnosis was confirmed by histological examination of the lesions. The relevant literature is reviewed concerning the frequency, age incidence, localisation, clinical features, treatment, prognosis and differential diagnosis of tuberculosis of the diaphysis.

A 14-yr-old white male with a severe form of progressive diaphyseal dysplasia (Engelmann-Camurati disease) was referred to our institution for evaluation of splenomegaly, which is not usually associated with the disease. Our studies included bone-marrow, and liver-spleen scans. These scintigraphic findings, along with the probable cause for splenomegaly, are discussed.

X-ray observations of bone lesions produced by Syphilis Connata Praecox have been reviewed. 15 cases of this condition are presented of which six show mucous and cutaneous lesions. One planus condylomata; three cases of pemphigus, one with paronychia; one perionixis and one rhinitis. Bone lesions appeared in X-ray observations in all cases excepting one in which lesions had already reacted to therapy. Diaphyseal femur fractures are common injuries globally and range in complexity. The most common mechanism worldwide is motor vehicle accidents. Initial evaluation should include Advanced Trauma Life Support protocol and evaluation of the soft tissues, neurovascular examination, and associated injuries. We reviewed 25 patients with tibial diaphyseal fractures which had been complicated by an acute compartment syndrome. Thirteen had undergone continuous monitoring of the compartment pressure and the other 12 had not. The average delay from injury to fasciotomy in the monitored group was 16 hours and in the non-monitored group 32 hours (p < 0.05).
