Primiparous women's knowledge of diastasis recti abdominis, concerns about abdominal appearance, treatments, and perceived abdominal muscle strength 6-8 months postpartum. A cross sectional comparison study.

BACKGROUND: Diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) is a prevalent condition in the postpartum period. To date, there is scant knowledge on how DRA influences physical, mental, and emotional health. This study investigates primiparous women`s knowledge about DRA, concerns about abdominal appearance, and perceived abdominal muscle strength, comparing women with and without reported DRA. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional comparison study. Data were collected by a web-based questionnaire, mainly through social media in Norway. To be included in the study women had to be primiparous 6-8 months postpart

Relationship between Preoperative Abdominal Wall Strength and Bulging at the Abdominal Free Flap Donor Site for Breast Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal bulging at the donor site of free abdominal flaps for breast reconstruction is a common postoperative complication. In addition to the thickness of abdominal muscles, the authors identified the rectus abdominis diastasis as an important factor that compromises abdominal wall strength. This study aimed to assess the relationship between preoperative abdominal wall strength and postoperative abdominal bulging. METHODS: A total of 224 patients were enrolled in this study. Patient demographics, the rectus and lateral abdominis muscle thicknesses, and the rate of rectus abdom

Abdominal Wall Plication and Correction of Deformities of the Myoaponeurotic Layer: Focusing on Materials and Techniques Used for Synthesis.

The different types of sutures utilized in plications and for correction of diastasis during abdominoplasty are reviewed and discussed. Because correction of abdominal deformities also involves fascia and muscle advancement, this review also covers the suture materials used in muscle advancement. The selection of specific techniques to treat different types of abdominal wall deformity is also considered. This is important, because the outcome when correcting these deformities depends not only on suture materials but also on employing the optimum technique. A PubMed/Medline search was performed

Diagnostic techniques for diastasis recti.

Diastasis recti (DR) is an abnormality of the anterior abdominal wall, characterized by a separation of the rectus abdominis muscles along the linea alba. A thorough history and physical exam can diagnose most cases of diastasis recti. Classification schemes for diastasis recti have been created based on inter-rectus distance and location of the defect, which can help with management decisions. Imaging modalities such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can aid in the classification of diastasis recti and guide surgical planning. Planning is most impor

Severe Irreversible Diastasis Recti Abdominis and Abdominal Hernia in Postpartum Women: Rare Case Report.

Diastasis recti abdominis is a condition defined as the separation between the rectus abdominis and the linea alba, which leads to weakness in the abdominal muscles. Diastasis may be slight or severe, sometimes resulting in herniation of the abdominal viscera. Following childbirth, most women develop some extent of muscle separation in the postpartum period. However, if the diastasis recti abdominis in the postpartum period remain severe, it should be corrected to prevent concurrent abdominal hernia, strangulation or incarceration. We herein present two Korean cases of postpartum women with se

Immediate Effect of Kinesio Taping on Lumbopelvic Stability in Postpartum Women With Diastasis Recti: A Review.

Diastasis of abdominal muscles is defined as a gap of more than two finger breadths between two rectal abdominal muscle bellies, above or below the umbilicus. According to the literature, female diastasis recti is more common in women who have recently given birth although it also occurs in the male population. Lower back pain is the most prevalent reason for postpartum women to restrict their everyday activities. Women's mobility, discomfort, and typical activities are all concerns for postpartum women, all of which change a person's quality of life. During pregnancy, diastasis of the rectus

Effect of Electrical Stimulation Followed by Exercises in Postnatal Diastasis Recti Abdominis via MMP2 Gene Expression.

Since abdominal muscle training is one of the most important ways to treat rectal diastasis, it is necessary to design and provide appropriate exercises to treat this problem. One of the complementary methods to achieve higher intensity training is the use of electrical muscle stimulation along with voluntary activity, which causes maximum recall in muscle units. Therefore, in the current study, the effect of electrical stimulation followed by exercises was evaluated in postnatal diastasis recti abdominis via MMP2 gene expression. For this purpose, we studied on thirty-two women who had rectal

Should diastasis recti be corrected?

The plication of the anterior rectus sheath is a procedure that is performed by most surgeons during abdominoplasty. A main concern is whether the correction of recti diastasis is really effective and if it is stable. In order to verify the position of the rectus muscle, a CT-scan was used in 14 patients who underwent abdominoplasty with rectus plication to compare the preoperative situation of these muscles with their position 3 weeks and 6 months postoperatively. None of these patients had had previous abdominal surgery. The recti diastasis was corrected with a two-layer 2-0 Nylon suture. A

Nipple invagination: the umbrella effect.

The authors present their technique for correction of invaginated nipple, a procedure used for the past 20 years. Most often, this condition is a consequence of a subareolar muscle diastasis associated with short fibrous septa as well as short and fibrotic ducts. The correction technique specifically divides the fibrous tracts and corrects the diastasis of the subareolar muscle. The procedure was performed for healthy patients as well as for patients with mastitis sequel treatment and surgical reduction or augmentation mammaplasty.

Urinary Incontinence and Abdominal Diastasis: A Detailed Analysis and Surgical Outcome in 100 Patients Undergoing Abdominoplasty.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI), particularly stress urinary incontinence (SUI), is a prevalent condition that significantly impacts the quality of life, especially in women. Abdominal diastasis recti, a separation of the rectus abdominis muscles, have been increasingly recognized as a contributing factor to UI due to its impact on core stability and intra-abdominal pressure regulation. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the pathophysiological connection between diastasis recti and UI and to evaluate the effectiveness of diastasis correction during abdominoplasty in alleviating UI sy
