Effect of probiotics on biomarkers of cardiovascular disease: implications for heart-healthy diets.

The objectives of this article are to review clinical trials that have examined the effects of probiotics on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and to assess the potential of probiotic intake as a therapeutic lifestyle change (TLC) dietary option. Twenty-six clinical studies and two meta-analyses are reviewed. Significant LDL-C reductions were observed for four probiotic strains: Lactobacillus reuteri NCIMB 30242, Enterococcus faecium, and the combination of Lactobacillus acidophilus La5 and Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12. Two synbiotics, L. acidophilus CHO-220 plus inulin and L. acidoph

Could the Wheel of Cardiovascular Health Diet Be a Tool for Diet Quality in Nutritional Counseling? Comparison with Healthy Eating Index-2020.

OBJECTIVE: The Wheel of Cardiovascular Health Diet was recently elaborated based on current nutritional recommendations for healthy eating and was made for person-centered nutritional counseling, thus it may be an interesting tool to improve food awareness. However, its validity is yet to be tested. We hypothesized that the self-perception of patients diagnosed with chronic diseases, evaluated by the Wheel of Cardiovascular Health Diet, is satisfactory in assessing the quality of their diets, compared with the Healthy Eating Index-2020. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional analysis of adults wi

Healthy Plant-Based Diet, Genetic Predisposition, and the Risk of Incident Venous Thromboembolism.

BACKGROUND: Plant-based dietary patterns are becoming increasingly popular due to environmental and health impacts, yet there are few studies exploring the relationship between plant-based dietary patterns and venous thromboembolism (VTE) in different genetic backgrounds. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate how plant-based dietary pattern and genetic susceptibility independently or jointly affect VTE and its subtypes of pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. METHODS: A total of 183,510 participants who were White British ethnicity background and free of VTE at baseline

Evaluating the diet quality of elderly Japanese using the Healthy Eating Index-2020.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Globally, efforts are underway to evaluate foods and meals by their nutritional value. In Japan, however, there is no comprehensive system for evaluating overall diet quality. The aim of this study is to use the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2020, which is based on the American Dietary Guidelines, to evaluate the diet quality of independent elderly Japanese people to consider appropriate methods for evaluating the Japanese diet. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: The subjects were 71 individuals aged 60 years or older who participated in a health examination. HEI-2020 was used

Relationship between microplastics in stool, diet, and inflammatory markers in healthy Japanese individuals.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to microplastics (MPs) can have adverse gastrointestinal effects by inducing inflammation and oxidative stress. The types of MPs in stool vary with the dietary intake. However, how MPs in the intestinal tract influence the inflammatory cytokine levels in the gastrointestinal tract in healthy individuals remains unclear, particularly in Japan, characterized by a high intake of vegetables and seafood. In this study, we investigated the relationship between food intake, stool MPs, and inflammatory markers in healthy Japanese individuals, and estimated the sources of the stool

Western diet given to healthy rats mimics the human phenotype of diabetic cardiomyopathy.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major problem worldwide. Within this patient group, cardiovascular diseases are the biggest cause of morbidity and mortality. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is defined as diabetes-associated structural and functional changes in the myocardium, not directly attributable to other confounding factors such as coronary artery disease or hypertension. Pathophysiology of DCM remains unclear due to a lack of adequate animal models reflecting the current pandemic of diabetes, associated with a high increased sugar intake and the 'Western' lifestyle. The aim of this study was

Diet effect on short- and long-term glycaemic response in adult healthy cats.

In the paper the short- and long-term glycaemic response after 4 diet programmes was evaluated. Each diet programme was alternatively administered to 6 healthy cats for 30 days. At the end of each period cats were weighed and underwent blood sampling for glucose and fructosamine determination. Glycaemia was measured every 2 hours for 24 hours using an automated glucometer. Very high protein level and low starch (VHP÷LS) and high protein and moderate starch level (HP÷LS) diets showed glucose (Mean and Peak) and fructosamine values signi cantly lower compared to the moderate protein and high sta

Amaranth, the ancient pseudocereal: a promising crop for climate-resilient agriculture and healthy diets.

Amaranthus spp. are plant species native to America. They are widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Some species in this genus are considered dual-crops. Their seeds and leaves can be used for both human and animal consumption. Grain and leafy amaranth are gluten-free and rich in protein, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and low glycemic index carbohydrates. Traditionally, it was grown as a pseudocereal grain, especially in Central and North America. However, cultivated amaranth species still show semidomesticated traits. These traits need to be improved

Early Biomarkers, Risk Factors, and Functional Indicators of Healthy Longevity and Their Relationship with Diet.

Background/Objectives: Healthy longevity depends on not only lifespan but also the maintenance of physiological, metabolic, physical, and cognitive functions throughout aging. Identifying early determinants of health is crucial for preventing age-related decline. This narrative review aims to synthesize current evidence on how diet and specific nutrients relate to these early risk factors and indicators of healthy longevity. Methods: A review was performed to identify the links between dietary factors, energy balance, and gut microbiota composition and normal body weight; blood cholesterol, pr

Exploring the Immunomodulatory Effects of Fasting-Mimicking Diet in Healthy Individuals: A Pilot Study.

Background: Fasting-mimicking diets (FMDs) induce metabolic changes associated with immunomodulation in preclinical studies, yet little is known about the effects of FMD on the human circulating immune system. Methods: In the single-arm FIND pilot study (NCT04833439), six of nine healthy participants completed two cycles of a 4-day FMD separated by 3 weeks of regular diet in a repeated-measures design. Blood samples were collected at baseline, after an overnight fast, and the morning after completion of the second FMD cycle. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were analyzed by transcrip

The Gut Microbiome as a Mechanistic Link Between the Planetary Health Diet and Healthy Aging.

Population aging, the rising burden of chronic non-communicable diseases, and environmental degradation are increasingly recognized as interconnected global challenges, underscoring the need for integrated strategies that simultaneously promote human and planetary health. The Planetary Health Diet (PHD), originally proposed to address these challenges, has emerged as a promising dietary framework for supporting healthy aging. Although its health benefits are increasingly supported by epidemiological and clinical evidence, the biological mechanisms underlying these effects remain incompletely u

Indices of healthy and unhealthy plant-based diets and the risk of selected digestive cancers.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The relation between various types of plant-based diets and cancer risk is still unclear. We examined the association of the overall plant-based diet index (PDI) and healthy (hPDI) and unhealthy plant-based diet indices (uPDI) with the risk of selected digestive cancers. METHODS: We used data from a network of hospital-based case-control studies including 942 oral/pharyngeal, 304 esophageal, 230 stomach, 1953 colorectal, and 326 pancreatic cancer cases. We calculated PDI, hPDI, and uPDI from a validated food frequency questionnaire. We used multivariable logistic regression

The iron content of healthy diets for one day for breastfed babies and young children.

AIMS: Early childhood anaemia due to iron deficiency is widespread in remote communities across northern Australia. Current recommendations for healthy food to complement breastfeeding at age 6 to 23 months include iron-rich and iron-enriched foods. An electronic nutrient analysis was undertaken to assess the iron content of hypothetical healthy diets for breastfed babies and young children aged 6 to 23 months in Australia, in comparison with their estimated requirements. METHODS: Hypothetical diets for 1 day were developed that were consistent with the Foundation Diets for breastfed infants

Barriers to Healthy Eating and Diabetes Diet Education: Divergent Perspectives of Patients and Their Providers.

Patients report that adhering to diet is the most challenging aspect of diabetes management. Provision of diet education is often delegated to health care providers, despite a lack of nutrition education and training and limited awareness of environmental and cultural challenges faced by patients. Aim. We examined perceived barriers to diet self-management among low-income minority patients with type 2 diabetes and their health care providers within a single ecosystem, to test whether providers understood patient barriers. Method. We surveyed 149 members of a safety-net clinic (99 patients, 50

Development of exchange lists for Mediterranean and Healthy Eating diets: implementation in an intervention trial.

BACKGROUND: There has been little research published on the adaptation of diabetic exchange list diet approaches for the design of intervention diets in health research despite their clinical utility. The exchange list approach can provide clear and precise guidance on multiple dietary changes simultaneously. The present study aimed to develop exchange list diets for Mediterranean and Healthy Eating, and to evaluate adherence, dietary intakes and markers of health risks with each counselling approach in 120 subjects at increased risk for developing colon cancer. METHODS: A randomised clinical

The fecal microbiota of healthy dogs fed extruded and raw meat-based diets.

Conventional dog diets, such as extruded diets, remain common. The popularity of unconventional options, particularly raw diets, has increased over time and may differentially influence the gut microbiota. Raw diets inherently harbor higher bacterial loads, including potentially pathogenic microorganisms, raising concerns from a One Health perspective due to the close interaction among pets, humans, and the environment. The study aims were to characterize the nutritional profiles of extruded and raw diets, compare the fecal microbial composition of dogs fed extruded diets with that of dogs fed

Impacts of climate-driven yield changes on the affordability of healthy diets: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Food security is central to global nutrition improvement and public health goals, and healthy diets represent a higher-level aspiration beyond merely avoiding hunger. Climate change poses an increasing threat to food systems by affecting crop yields and food prices. Although climate change-driven risks to hunger have been widely studied, the extent to which climate change undermines the affordability of healthy diets while accounting for socioeconomic responses and regional inequalities remains insufficiently understood. This study aimed to quantify the effects of climate change on
