BACKGROUND: Medical nutrition therapy is first-line treatment for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). The high popularity of low carbohydrate diets may impact on the acceptability of the diet recommended by dietitians for management of GDM.
AIMS: This study assessed the experience of women prescribed the Standardised Gestational Diabetes (SGD) diet (45%-50%, 25%-30%, 15%-20% from carbohydrate, fat and protein, respectively).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of women with GDM was undertaken to collect viewpoints on the SGD diet. Pregnant women with pre-gestational diabetes, tw

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer in men. Its incidence varies widely and is influenced by geographic location, race, ethnicity, lifestyle factors, and diet. The purpose of this review is to discuss the association between prostate cancer and diet and outline the impact of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and phytonutrients on the pathogenesis of disease.
RECENT FINDINGS: Although conclusive evidence is limited, current data is indicative that a diet low in particular fats, animal proteins, dairy products and high in vegetables and fruits can b

INTRODUCTION: Pompe disease (PD) is a lysosomal storage disorder characterized by progressive glycogen accumulation leading to cardiomyopathy and motor decline. Despite the survival benefits of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), the long-term clinical course is often complicated by persistent skeletal muscle pathology, necessitating effective adjunctive interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of a high fat, high protein, carbohydrate-restricted dietary intervention in patients with PD.
METHODS: Data collected included the initial and duration of dietary treatment, tota

A 27-yr-old woman with the myopathic form of acid maltase deficiency (AMD) developed severe respiratory insufficiency after a crash diet resulting in a 6-kg weight loss. While being maintained on home ventilation, an hypercaloric high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet (1800-2000 cal; 28% carbohydrates, 55% fat, 17% protein with 1.7 g protein/kg body weight) was instituted. This ameliorated her condition up to a level where useful life was possible and ventilation could be diminished.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Low birth weight is associated with an increased incidence of adult glucose intolerance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in humans. In pregnant rats, dietary calorie or protein deprivation results in growth retarded pups, which become glucose intolerant adults with abnormal hepatic glucose metabolism and gluconeogenic enzyme activities. However, whether these abnormalities are present before birth remain unknown.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This study examined the effects of manipulating dietary protein and carbohydrate intake during rat pregnancy on the fetal and mate

Ketogenic diet, a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet, is an established treatment for patients with severe epilepsy. We have previously reported a moderate reduction in seizure frequency after treatment with a modified Atkins diet. This study aimed to see whether dietary therapy impacts patients' health-related quality of life (HRQOL). In a randomized controlled design, we compared the change in self-reported HRQOL among adults with difficult-to-treat epilepsy after a 12-week diet intervention. Thirty-nine patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy (age = 16-65 years) were randomized to eat a mo

BACKGROUND: North Sea Progressive Myoclonus Epilepsy is a rare and severe disorder caused by mutations in the GOSR2 gene. It is clinically characterized by progressive myoclonus, seizures, early-onset ataxia and areflexia. As in other progressive myoclonus epilepsies, the efficacy of antiepileptic drugs is disappointingly limited in North Sea Progressive Myoclonus Epilepsy. The ketogenic diet and the less restrictive modified Atkins diet have been proven to be effective in other drug-resistant epilepsy syndromes, including those with myoclonic seizures. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy of

Ketogenic diet therapy (KDT), particularly modified Atkins diet (MAD), is increasingly recognized as a treatment for adults with epilepsy. Women with epilepsy (WWE) comprise 50% of people with epilepsy and approximately one in three have catamenial epilepsy. The purpose of this study was to determine whether adding a medium chain triglyceride emulsion to MAD to target catamenial seizures was feasible and well-tolerated. This was a prospective two-center study of pre-menopausal WWE with a catamenial seizure pattern on MAD. After a 1-month baseline interval with no changes in treatment, particip

There is evidence in the general population that adhering to a high protein and low carbohydrate diet may help in losing weight. However, there is little evidence among postpartum women. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of a high protein diet on weight loss among postpartum women. A parallel-randomized controlled trial with 94 postpartum women was conducted in a maternity ward in Mesquita county (recruitment from February 2009 to December 2010) and in a polyclinic in Rio de Janeiro city (recruitment from December 2010 to December 2011). Women were randomized to the intervention

To evaluate the effects of feeding frequency (FF) and dietary protein/carbohydrate (P/CH) ratios on appetite regulation of gilthead seabream, two practical diets were formulated to include high protein and low carbohydrate (P50/CH10 diet) or low protein and high carbohydrate (P40/CH20 diet) content and each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish until visual satiation each meal at a FF of 1, 2, or 3 meals per day. Feed intake and feed conversion ratio were higher in fish fed 2 or 3 meals than 1 meal per day and in fish fed the P40/CH20 than the P50/CH10 diet. The specific growth rate was on

Overweight women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) were randomized to a high protein (HP; 40% carbohydrate and 30% protein; n = 14) or a low protein (LP; 55% carbohydrate and 15% protein) diet (n = 14). The intervention consisted of 12 wk of energy restriction (approximately 6000 kJ/d), followed by 4 wk of weight maintenance. Pregnancies (two HP and one LP); improvements in menstrual cyclicity, lipid profile, and insulin resistance (as measured by the homeostasis model); and decreases in weight (7.5%) and abdominal fat (12.5%) occurred independently of diet composition. Improvements in men

SUMMARY: A 17-year-old girl presented with recurrent attacks of acute pancreatitis, associated with severe hyperglycemia and hypertriglyceridemia, despite being on intensive insulin therapy for the last 10 years. She had severe acanthosis nigricans, generalized loss of subcutaneous fat and prominent veins over extremities. The serum levels of glucose and triglyceride did not reduce significantly, even with maximally tolerated doses of metformin (2 g), pioglitazone (45 mg) and fenofibrate (160 mg), not uncommonly seen in poor rural families in West Bengal, India. A detailed dietary recall revea

Training with low carbohydrate availability (LCA) has been proposed as an independent determinant of physiological perturbations commonly attributed to low energy availability (LEA) and to increase skeletal muscle oxidative machinery, yet the effects of LCA in isolation from LEA remain unclear. We examined whether short-term carbohydrate restriction under energy balance alters endocrine and metabolic markers associated with LEA and skeletal muscle proteomic response. In a randomized crossover design, eight trained males completed 4 days of either a low-carbohydrate high-fat diet (LOW; 12% carb

A significant contribution could be made to patient care if nutritional biochemists, basic and clinical toxicologists, and pharmacologists in the various fields were to mount the studies needed to understand the nature of food-drug interactions. If only a small fraction of the 120 billion dollars per year spent for food or the 10 billion dollars expended for drugs were allocated for research in this area, advances might be made for the health of the nation. Changes in man's diet produce marked effects on drug metabolism. We know that changing a customary diet to one high in protein and low in

A patient with liver dysfunction following small-bowel bypass for obesity was treated successfully with intravenous hyperalimentation. The hepatic steatosis and dysfunction were most likely caused by the preferential absorption of carbohydrate in the remaining small bowel, with resulting relative protein starvation. Routine use of high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets postoperatively until weight stabilization has occurred may prevent this complication.

OBJECTIVE: One of the goals in treating patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who suffer from hypoxemia, hypercapnia, and malnutrition is to correct the malnutrition without increasing the respiratory quotient and minimize the production of carbon dioxide. This 3-wk study evaluated the efficacy of feeding a high-fat, low-carbohydrate (CHO) nutritional supplement as opposed to a high-carbohydrate diet in COPD patients on parameters of pulmonary function.S METHODS: Sixty COPD patients with low body weight (<90% ideal body weight) were randomized to the control group, which r

We examined the effects of high-carbohydrate and high-fat diets on the serum lipid levels of distance runners. For seven days before each study, subjects consumed a diet containing 15% protein, 32% fat, and 53% carbohydrate. During 14-day experimental periods, a control group (n = 10) continued the same diet while two other groups consumed 69% of their calories as either carbohydrate (n = 13) or fat (n = 14). High-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol decreased 9% during the high-carbohydrate diet because of a 26% fall in the HDL2 fraction (1.063 to 1.125 g/mL). These changes were not accompan

The most appropriate type of diets to maintain or lose body weight over the medium to long term has been a matter of controversy and debates for more than half a century. Both voluntarily and coercive food restriction, resulting in negative energy and macronutrient balance and hence weight loss, have not been designed to be maintained for the long term. By contrast, when a classical and traditional type of alimentation is consumed in ad lib conditions (e.g., the Mediterranean "diet"), it generally provides an appropriate nutritional density of essential macronutrients and micronutrients; it is

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Strong evidence supports the importance of diet and other lifestyle factors in preventing T2DM. Among individuals with T2DM, low-carbohydrate diets lead to decreases in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). However, research on the effects of low-carbohydrate diets on glycemic outcomes among individuals not currently on glucose-lowering medications who have elevated HbA1c is limited.
METHODS: The objective of this randomized controlled trial is to study the effect of a healthy low-carbohydrate diet achieved th

High and low protein diets fed to pregnant adolescent sows led to intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR). To explore underlying mechanisms, sow plasma metabolite and hormone concentrations were analyzed during different pregnancy stages and correlated with litter weight (LW) at birth, sow body weight and back fat thickness. Sows were fed diets with low (6.5%, LP), adequate (12.1%, AP), and high (30%, HP) protein levels, made isoenergetic by adjusted carbohydrate content. At -5, 24, 66, and 108 days post coitum (dpc) fasted blood was collected. At 92 dpc, diurnal metabolic profiles were determi
