High cysteine diet reduces insulin resistance in SHR-CRP rats.

Increased plasma total cysteine (tCys) has been associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome in human and some animal studies but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we aimed at evaluating the effects of high cysteine diet administered to SHR-CRP transgenic rats, a model of metabolic syndrome and inflammation. SHR-CRP rats were fed either standard (3.2 g cystine/kg diet) or high cysteine diet (HCD, enriched with additional 4 g L-cysteine/kg diet). After 4 weeks, urine, plasma and tissue samples were collected and parameters of metabolic syndrome, sulfur metabolites and h

Mediterranean diet reduces endothelial damage and improves the regenerative capacity of endothelium.

BACKGROUND: Endothelial dysfunction is a fundamental step in the atherosclerotic disease process. Activation or injury of the endothelium leads to a variety of inflammatory disorders, including the release of microparticles. Endothelial progenitor cells may contribute to the maintenance of the endothelium by replacing injured mature endothelial cells. OBJECTIVE: We studied the influence of dietary fat on the release of endothelial microparticles (EMPs) and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in elderly subjects. DESIGN: Twenty healthy, elderly subjects (10 men and 10 women) consumed 3 diets

Comparison of 0.46% calcium diets with and without added anions with a 0.7% calcium anionic diet as a means to reduce periparturient hypocalcemia.

Most studies demonstrating that diets with low dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) reduce hypocalcemia in cows add enough anions to the diet to reduce urine pH below 7.0. One objective of these experiments was to determine whether there is any benefit to periparturient plasma Ca concentration if diet anion addition results in a lesser degree of acidification of the cow and urine pH does not go below 7.0. Another method for reducing hypocalcemia involves feeding a prepartal diet that is Ca deficient. This places the cow in negative Ca balance before calving, stimulating parathyroid hormone (

Depletion of ApoA5 aggravates spontaneous and diet-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease by reducing hepatic NR1D1 in hamsters.

Background: ApoA5 mainly synthesized and secreted by liver is a key modulator of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity and triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs). Although the role of ApoA5 in extrahepatic triglyceride (TG) metabolism in circulation has been well documented, the relationship between ApoA5 and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains incompletely understood and the underlying molecular mechanism still needs to be elucidated. Methods: We used CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to delete Apoa5 gene from Syrian golden hamster, a small rodent model replicating human metabolic features. Th

PPARα suppresses growth of hepatocellular carcinoma in a high-fat diet context by reducing neutrophil extracellular trap release.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The role of infiltrating neutrophils in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is modulated by cellular metabolism, specifically lipid homeostasis. Throughout the progression of HCC, alterations in lipid metabolism are intricately linked with regulation of neutrophil function and the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). However, how much the protumor effect of a high-fat diet (HFD) depends on NETs and the potential interplay between NETs and other leukocytes in HCC remains uncertain. METHODS: In this study, the molecular mechanism of NET release and the potential benef

Enhancing insulin sensitivity by reducing adipocyte senescence using uPAR-targeted nanoparticles in high-fat-diet-induced obese mice.

The urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored membrane protein that regulates fibrinolysis, cell adhesion, migration, and intracellular signaling. Elevated uPAR expression is linked to numerous pathological conditions, including cancer, inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction. In obesity and aging, increased uPAR levels are associated with chronic inflammation, adipose tissue impairment, and systemic metabolic disturbances. uPAR also modulates adipocyte differentiation and contributes to the progression of inflammatory obesity, while servin

ZBED6 counteracts high-fat diet-induced glucose intolerance by maintaining beta cell area and reducing excess mitochondrial activation.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: ZBED6 (zinc finger, BED-type containing 6) is known to regulate muscle mass by suppression of Igf2 gene transcription. In insulin-producing cell lines, ZBED6 maintains proliferative capacity at the expense of differentiation and beta cell function. The aim was to study the impact of Zbed6 knockout on beta cell function and glucose tolerance in C57BL/6 mice. METHODS: Beta cell area and proliferation were determined in Zbed6 knockout mice using immunohistochemical analysis. Muscle and fat distribution were assessed using micro-computed tomography. Islet gene expression was asse

Effect of garden cress in reducing blood glucose, improving blood lipids, and reducing oxidative stress in a mouse model of diabetes induced by a high-fat diet and streptozotocin.

BACKGROUND: A mouse model in which diabetes mellitus was induced by low-dose streptozotocin (STZ) injection combined with a high-fat diet was used to study the effect of two water cress (Lepidium savitum) preparations. Diabetic mice were treated with dried cress powder or with water-soluble extracts (tested at two doses), together with proper control groups. The mice were evaluated after 4 weeks of continuous intervention for type 2 diabetic and associated markers. We determined blood glucose, body weight, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density l

D-Psicose mitigates NAFLD mice induced by a high-fat diet by reducing lipid accumulation, inflammation, and oxidative stress.

D-Psicose (DPS) serves as an optimal sucrose substitute, providing only 0.3% of sucrose's energy content, while exhibiting anti-inflammatory properties and inhibiting lipid synthesis. However, its efficacy in managing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. This study employed network pharmacology and molecular docking to identify potential DPS targets for NAFLD treatment. A high-fat diet was used to induce a NAFLD mouse model, with DPS administered in drinking water at 5% (high dose DPS group, DPSH group) and 2.5% (low dose DPS group, DPSL group) concentrations. Liquiritigenin alleviates high-salt diet-induced heart damage by inhibiting TGF-β1/Smad signaling and reducing inflammation and fibrosis.

Excessive dietary salt intake is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, immune dysregulation, and metabolic syndrome, representing a growing global health challenge. A high-salt diet (HSD) induces oxidative stress, inflammation, and myocardial fibrosis, ultimately leading to cardiac injury. Nevertheless, effective preventive interventions remain limited. Liquiritigenin (LG), a natural flavonoid isolated from liquorice, possesses potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. However, its cardioprotective potential in the context of HSD-induced damage has not been fully elucidate

Effects of reducing growth rate via diet dilution on bone mineralization, performance and carcass yield of coccidia-infected broilers.

Coccidiosis and rapid growth rate (GR) compromise bone mineralization in modern broilers. We tested the hypothesis that reducing GR via diet dilution during peak bone development will improve bone mineralization in both infected and uninfected broilers. A total of 384 male Ross 308 chicks were allocated to a basal grower diet (3,107 kcal/kg ME and 19.4% CP) diluted with 0, 5, 10, or 15% lignocellulose (n = 12 pens/treatment, 8 birds/pen) at day 10 of age. Prior to this, birds in each group received half the intended diet-dilution levels (day 8 to 10 of age) and a common starter diet (day 1 to

Overexpression of irisin reduces embryonic and diet-induced hepatic lipid accumulation in chickens.

Excessive lipid accumulation in the liver can lead to fatty liver disease, which causes substantial economic losses in the poultry industry. To investigate whether irisin could alleviate hepatic lipid accumulation in 19-day-old chicken embryos or in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced models, we constructed transgenic chimeric chickens overexpressing irisin by embryonic injection of lentiviral or adenoviral vectors. The results showed that these chickens exhibited stable and sustained high-level expression of irisin in vivo, which significantly improved lipid content and liver injury markers in both s

Reduced Sulfur Diet Reshapes the Microbiome and Metabolome in Mild-Moderate Ulcerative Colitis.

This pilot study investigated the effects of a reduced sulfur (RS) diet on the gut microbiome composition and fecal metabolome in individuals with remitted or active ulcerative colitis (UC). Thirteen participants maintained their habitual diet (control), while nine followed an RS diet for eight weeks (Wk8). Stool and plasma samples were collected at the baseline and Wk8. The sulfur intake decreased in the RS group (-28 g/1000 kcal) versus the control group (-1.7 g/1000 kcal; p < 0.001). The RS group exhibited a significant decrease in lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (-5280 ng/mL), while the

Effects of Reduced Dietary Sodium and the DASH Diet on GFR: The DASH-Sodium Trial.

KEY POINTS: Sodium reduction over a 4-week period decreased eGFR. Combining sodium reduction with the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet resulted in larger reductions in eGFR. Changes in diastolic BP seem partially responsible for the observed dietary effects. BACKGROUND: A potassium-rich Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet combined with low sodium reduces BP. However, the effects of sodium reduction in combination with the DASH diet on kidney function are unknown. We determined the effects of sodium reduction and the DASH diet, on eGFR using cystatin C. METHODS: DA

Effects of a gluten-reduced or gluten-free diet for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a major cause of disability and the leading cause of death worldwide. To reduce mortality and morbidity, prevention strategies such as following an optimal diet are crucial. In recent years, low-gluten and gluten-free diets have gained strong popularity in the general population. However, study results on the benefits of a gluten-reduced or gluten-free diet are conflicting, and it is unclear whether a gluten-reduced diet has an effect on the primary prevention of CVD. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of a gluten-reduced or gluten-free diet for

A ketogenic diet reduces mechanical allodynia and improves epidermal innervation in diabetic mice.

Dietary interventions are promising approaches to treat pain associated with metabolic changes because they impact both metabolic and neural components contributing to painful neuropathy. Here, we tested whether consumption of a ketogenic diet could affect sensation, pain, and epidermal innervation loss in type 1 diabetic mice. C57Bl/6 mice were rendered diabetic using streptozotocin and administered a ketogenic diet at either 3 weeks (prevention) or 9 weeks (reversal) of uncontrolled diabetes. We quantified changes in metabolic biomarkers, sensory thresholds, and epidermal innervation to asse
