Dietary Fiber Alleviates Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis Caused by High Bile Acids.

Abnormal bile acid (BA) levels often accompany rising nutritional chronic metabolic diseases (hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and obesity). BAs regulate glucose, lipid, and energy metabolism, and gut microbiota mediate their metabolism, so aberrant BAs disrupt microbiota and impair health. To avoid time-consuming and complex animal/human trials, this study used the in-vitro colonic simulation system to focus on dietary fiber and gut microbiota. The research results show that high BA (4.64 g/L) reduced microbial alpha diversity, enriched opportunistic pathogens (e.g., Escherichia-Shigella, Klebsiella

Dietary fiber intake and risk of gallstone: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Gallstone disease (GSD) and its complications are major public health issues globally. Although many community-based studies had addressed the risk factors for GSD, little is known about the associations between dietary factors and risk of disease. The present study aimed to investigate the potential associations between dietary fibers with the risk of gallstone disease. METHODS: In this case-control study, 189 GSD patients with less than one month of diagnosis and 342 age‑matched controls were enrolled. Dietary intakes were assessed using a 168-item semi-quantitative validated fo

Current Understanding of Dietary Fiber and Its Role in Chronic Diseases.

Dietary fiber (DF) is an essential, albeit under-consumed, component in the North American diet. DF is thought to have anti-inflammatory disease-modifying effects via DF-related gut microbiota degradation products called short chain fatty acids. Thus far studies have shown the greatest associations between DF intake and risk reduction in obesity, improved weight loss outcomes, and risk reduction of cardiovascular disease (CVD). There is weak evidence associating DF intake and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) risk, IBD remission, reduced risk of Crohn's disease (CD flares, and no evidence showi

Sex-Dependent Efficacy of Dietary Fiber in Pediatric Functional Abdominal Pain.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs) are more prevalent in female patients. Dietary fiber may alleviate FAPD symptoms; however, whether this effect is sex dependent remains unclear. We investigated the sex dependency of dietary fiber benefit on abdominal pain in children with FAPDs and explored the potential involvement of the gut microbiome. METHODS: In 2 cross-sectional cohorts of children with FAPDs (n = 209) and healthy control individuals (n = 105), we correlated dietary fiber intake with abdominal pain symptoms after stratifying by sex. We also performed sex-st

Gut Microbiota Modulate Rabbit Meat Quality in Response to Dietary Fiber.

Antibiotics are widely used in gastrointestinal diseases in meat rabbit breeding, which causes safety problems for meat products. Dietary fiber can regulate the gut microbiota of meat rabbits, but the mechanism of improving meat quality is largely unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of adding different fiber sources to rabbit diets on the growth performance, gut microbiota composition, and muscle metabolite composition of meat rabbits. A total of 18 New Zealand white rabbits of similar weight (40 ± 1 day old) were randomly assigned to beet pulp treatment (BP), alfa

Association between dietary fiber intake and risk of incident aortic stenosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although aortic stenosis is the most common valvular heart disease requiring intervention in Europe, the role that diet plays in development of the disease is largely unknown. The pathophysiology of aortic stenosis is however similar to other cardiovascular diseases that fiber intake has been associated with. The aim of this study was consequently to investigate the association between dietary fiber intake as well as the main food sources of fiber, i.e. fruit and vegetables and whole grains, and risk of incident aortic stenosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Malmö Diet and Can

The role of dietary fiber in the gastrointestinal tract: when, how and why?

Dietary fiber (DF) used to be seen merely as an indigestible component, but it is now recognized as essential for both gut and overall metabolic health. Historically, humans consumed between 70 and 120 g of fiber per day, far more than the less than 20 g typically eaten today, despite WHO recommendations of 25-35 g daily. The physiological effects of dietary fibers depend on a complex interplay of their physicochemical properties (solubility, viscosity, and fermentability) rather than on a single characteristic. These properties determine how fibers interact with different segments of the gast

Recommendations for the Use of Dietary Fiber to Improve Blood Pressure Control.

According to several international, regional, and national guidelines on hypertension, lifestyle interventions are the first-line treatment to lower blood pressure (BP). Although diet is one of the major lifestyle modifications described in hypertension guidelines, dietary fiber is not specified. Suboptimal intake of foods high in fiber, such as in Westernized diets, is a major contributing factor to mortality and morbidity of noncommunicable diseases due to higher BP and cardiovascular disease. In this review, we address this deficiency by examining and advocating for the incorporation of die

Dietary fiber aids in the management of canine and feline gastrointestinal disease.

Dietary fiber describes a diverse assortment of nondigestible carbohydrates that play a vital role in the health of animals and maintenance of gastrointestinal tract homeostasis. The main roles dietary fiber play in the gastrointestinal tract include physically altering the digesta, modulating appetite and satiety, regulating digestion, and acting as a microbial energy source through fermentation. These functions can have widespread systemic effects. Fiber is a vital component of nearly all commercial canine and feline diets. Key features of fiber types, such as fermentability, solubility, and

The Role of Dietary Fiber in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients: A Feasibility Study.

Short-chain fatty acids are microbial metabolites that have been shown to be key regulators of the gut-joint axis in animal models. In humans, microbial dysbiosis was observed in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients as well as in those at-risk to develop RA, and is thought to be an environmental trigger for the development of clinical disease. At the same time, diet has a proven impact on maintaining intestinal microbial homeostasis. Given this association, we performed a feasibility study in RA patients using high-fiber dietary supplementation with the objective to restore microbial homeostasis

Associations between intestinal microbiota, fecal properties, and dietary fiber conditions: The Japanese traditional medicine Junchoto ameliorates dietary fiber deficit-induced constipation with F/B ratio alteration in rats.

Changes in the intestinal microbiota are known to occur in constipated patients. Dietary fiber restriction presents obstacles to appropriate defecation and affects fecal properties, but the relationship between fecal microbiota and fecal morphological properties remains obscure. Therefore, we examined the influence of fiber diets on the fecal microbiome and properties in rats, and the effectiveness of the Japanese traditional medicine Junchoto (JCT) in rats with fiber deficit-induced constipation. Rats were fed three different fiber diets with varying cellulose contents (0 %, FFD; 5 %, ND; 15

Dietary survey and total dietary fiber intake in patients with irritable bowel syndrome attending a tertiary referral hospital.

BACKGROUND: Based on their chemical extraction, dietary fibers are classified into crude fibers and total dietary fibers (TDF). TDF gives the best estimate of fiber content in the diet. Whereas data on intake of crude fibers are available, there is a lack of data on intake of TDF in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). AIM: We assessed the TDF and its source in the diet of patients with IBS and healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Based on their predominant symptoms, 81 patients with IBS (according to Rome II criteria) were categorized into constipation-predominant (IBS-C, n=48), diarrhe

Modified dietary fiber from soybean dregs by fermentation alleviated constipation in mice.

Soybean dregs are the main by-product obtained from the processing of soy products and are good sources of dietary fiber (DF). This study showed that the soluble DF content increased from 4.97% to 18.82%, while the insoluble DF content decreased from 59.37% to 44.89% after soybean dreg fermentation using Trichoderma spp., without any significant change in the total DF content (p > 0.05). Physicochemical property and electron microscopy analysis revealed that the rehydration ratio, dissolution rate, expansion force, and oil holding capacity of DF significantly increased (p < 0.05) with finer mi
