Maternal Dietary Intakes, Red Blood Cell Indices and Risk for Anemia in the First, Second and Third Trimesters of Pregnancy and at Predelivery.

As anemia remains a major public health problem in Ghana, we examined the effect of dietary intakes, and antenatal care (ANC) practices on red cell indices and anemia prevalence during the pregnancy continuum for 415 women. Dietary history was taken using the Food and Agriculture Organization minimum dietary diversity indicator for women (MDD-W). Intake of ≥5 food groups was a proxy for micronutrient adequacy. Odds for anemia and meeting the MDD-W were estimated using ordinal and binary logistic regressions respectively. Intakes of 41.4% were micronutrient inadequate. At any time point in preg

Investigating the dietary knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of Australian patients with cancer.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence linking diet to the risk of developing cancer and preventing recurrence, but the therapeutic value of food in treating cancer remains unclear. Therefore, guidelines for well-nourished patients with cancer are based on general healthy eating recommendations. This study aims to describe patients' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs towards the role of diet and cancer. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken between July 2016 and January 2017. Patients being reviewed by Medical Oncology at a tertiary cancer service were invited to complete a questionnaire. R

Understanding factors affecting engagement with food-related services in areas of deprivation: A mixed-methods approach.

Poor dietary health is disproportionately higher in low-income adults, who often face multiple barriers to accessing affordable, nutritious food. Food-related services aim to address these challenges, but engagement remains inconsistent. Understanding the drivers of (non)engagement is critical to improving service design and delivery. This mixed-methods study explored factors influencing engagement with food-related services among low-income adults living in deprived areas. A cross-sectional survey (n = 77) measured capability, opportunity, and motivation to engage with services using the COM-

Dietary guidance in heart failure: a perspective on needs for prevention and management.

The role that dietary factors play in preventing heart failure (HF) and in improving prognosis is increasingly recognized, indicating a need for well-grounded guidelines that can provide recommendations for daily nutrient intakes. At present, however, the state of dietary guidance is more satisfactory for persons at risk of HF (Stages A and B) than for those with a diagnosis of HF (Stages C and D). For individuals at risk of HF, a good starting point is provided by governmental and professional society guidance directed at dietary management of cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension,

What are the "best-buys" for health promotion in pharmacy?

Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) significantly contribute to global mortality and diminished quality of life, placing a growing burden on healthcare systems. The World Health Organization has developed cost-effective strategies to manage these diseases, entitled "best buys", by addressing major risk factors for NCDs, such as smoking, alcohol use, unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity. Pharmacies, as accessible healthcare facilities, are well-positioned to support preventive care and behaviour change, including tobacco and alcohol cessation, dietary modifications, and physical activi

Use of health care services and pharmaceutical agents in coeliac disease: a prospective nationwide study.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1% of the population suffer from coeliac disease. However, the disease is heavily underdiagnosed. Unexplained symptoms may lead to incremented medical consultations and productivity losses. The aim here was to estimate the possible concealed burden of untreated coeliac disease and the effects of a gluten-free diet. METHODS: A nationwide cohort of 700 newly detected adult coeliac patients were prospectively evaluated. Health care service use and sickness absence from work during the year before diagnosis were compared with those in the general population; the data obt

Effectiveness of integrated chicken production and nutrition-sensitive interventions on females' dietary diversity outcomes: a cluster-randomized controlled trial in rural Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Rural Ethiopian females have poor dietary diversity. Although nutrition-sensitive agriculture offers an opportunity for improving dietary diversity, evidence on effectiveness for females' nutrition outcomes remains limited. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a chicken production intervention, with and without a nutrition behavior change component, on females' dietary diversity in rural Ethiopia. METHODS: We conducted a 3-arm, cluster-randomized controlled trial among 2117 households in 60 villages across 4 regions of Ethiopia. Villages were randomly allo

Dietary diversity and associated factors among pregnant women in the Southern Province of Rwanda: A facility-based cross-sectional study.

The inadequate dietary diversity of pregnant women in low- and middle-income countries, including Rwanda, is rising and leading to macro and micronutrient deficiencies. The extent of dietary diversity and the factors contributing to it are unknown in Rwanda. This cross-sectional study, with 612 women who attended antenatal care services in Rwanda's Southern Province, identified determinants of dietary diversity among pregnant women. A multistage sampling scheme was used in which four districts were sampled, thereafter one urban and one rural health centre was sampled in each district and final

Nutrition during pregnancy.

Nutrition assessment and counseling are integral components of preconception and prenatal care. The average-size woman should gain between 11.25 and 15.75 kg (25 and 35 lb) during a normal pregnancy. Some factors identify the pregnant woman with a nutrition risk. Vitamin and mineral supplementation should be based on a dietary assessment. Common discomforts of pregnancy frequently can be managed with dietary modification and safe pharmacotherapeutics. The coordinated efforts of health care providers, registered dietitians, the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) nutrition program, local health

Provision and Supervision of Food and Protein Substitute in School for Children with PKU: Parent Experiences.

Children spend a substantial part of their childhood in school, so provision of dietary care and inclusion of children with phenylketonuria (PKU) in this setting is essential. There are no reports describing the dietary support children with PKU receive whilst at school. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore the experiences of the dietary management of children with PKU in schools across the UK. Data was collected using an online survey completed by parents/caregivers of children with PKU. Of 159 questionnaire responses, 92% (n = 146) of children attended state school, 6% (n = 1
