During the first three years of the Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals (PARC), we derived health-based human biomonitoring guidance values (HBM-GVs) for 11 substances to enable the direct health-related interpretation of human biomonitoring (HBM) results. HBM-GVs indicate the concentration threshold of the substance or its specific metabolite(s) in human biological samples up to which according to current knowledge no adverse health effects are expected, assuming exposure to the individual substance alone. New HBM-GVs are now available for the pesticides' active ingredients

Adverse temporal trends in human semen quality and cryptorchidism in infants have been associated with exposure to environmental chemicals (ECs) during development. Here we report that a population of breeding dogs exhibit a 26 year (1988-2014) decline in sperm quality and a concurrent increased incidence of cryptorchidism in male offspring (1995-2014). A decline in the number of males born relative to the number of females was also observed. ECs, including diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and polychlorinated biphenyl 153 (PCB153), were detected in adult dog testes and commercial dog foods at con

The global transition away from di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)-plasticized blood storage systems has raised important questions regarding platelet storage biology, transfusion performance, and recipient exposure to plasticizer-derived compounds. This systematic review evaluated platelet quality, plasticizer migration, and modeled transfusion exposure associated with DEHP-containing and DEHP-free platelet storage systems, including di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHT), diisononyl cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH), butyryl trihexyl citrate (BTHC), and tri(2-ethylhexyl) trimellitate (TOTM

The ecotoxic endocrine-disrupting chemical di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is ubiquitous in agricultural soil, posing a serious threat to human health. Here, we report efficient soil-borne DEHP degradation and plant growth promotion by a microbial organic fertilizer GK-PPB prepared by combining a recycled garden waste-kitchen waste compost product with ternary compound microbial agent PPB-MA, composed of Penicillium oxalic MB08F, Pseudomonas simiae MB751, and Bacillus tequilensis MB05B. The combination of MB08F and MB751 provided synergistic phosphorus solubilization, and MB05B enhanced the

Emerging evidence indicates that nanoplastics (NPs) can transport organic pollutants such as di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) into organisms and induce adverse health effects. Nevertheless, the toxic effects of NPs combined with DEHP on mammalian intestine are still unclear. In this study, the C57BL6J mice were exposed to polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs), DEHP or them both for 30 days to determine their effects on different segments of intestine and the gut microbiota. As a result, DEHP alone or co-exposure to DEHP and PSNPs induced histological damages in all intestinal parts, mainly manif

Phthalates (PAEs), especially di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), are generally considered to have adverse impact on nervous system. The residue of DEHP in the environment has gradually become a widely concerned environmental problem due to its widespread use in plastic items. Lycopene (LYC) as the readily available natural antioxidant is considered to have the potential to alleviate exogenous poisons-induced nerve damage. However, there is currently a lack of strategies to alleviate the neurotoxicity caused by DEHP, and it is also unknown whether LYC can alleviate the neurotoxicity caused by

With sessile habits, sponges (phylum Porifera) are susceptible to marine pollution impacts and recently microplastics were identified as one source of contamination. Microplastics have a physical impact on filtration rates and plastics additives such as di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), a ubiquitous marine contaminant, were already identified in their tissues indicating bioaccumulation. However, few studies assessed the impacts of such compounds in its physiology. One verified effect of phthalate exposure is the arrest of the contraction cycles observed in the sponge Hymeniacidon heliophila. I

Sediments are important sinks for di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a plasticizer, and thus, maintaining the sediment quality is essential for eliminating plasticizers in aqueous environments and recovering the sediment ecological functions. To mitigate the potential risks of endocrine-disrupting compounds, identifying an effective and eco-friendly degradation process of organic pollutants from sediments is important. However, sustainable and efficient utilization of slow pyrolysis for converting shark fishbone to generate shark fishbone biochar (SFBC) has rarely been explored. Herein, SFBC

The principal aim of the present study was to develop and apply novel ex vivo tests as an alternative to cell cultures able to evaluate the possible effects of emerging and legacy contaminants in Caretta caretta. To this end, we performed ex vivo experiments on non-invasively collected whole-blood and skin-biopsy slices treated with chrysene, MEHP, or PBDE-47. Blood samples were tested by oxidative stress (TAS), immune system (respiratory burst, lysozyme, and complement system), and genotoxicity (ENA assay) biomarkers, and genotoxic and immune system effects were observed. Skin slices were ana

Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is an omnipresent environmental pollutant with endocrine disrupting properties. As a plasticizer, DEHP can be leach from the plastic to transfer the external environment and thus enters the animal food chain, causing serious damage to the animal organs. The heat-shock response (HSR) comprising heat-shock protein (HSPs) and heat-shock transcription factor (HSFs) plays a pivotal role in various toxic stress conditions. For the sake of investigating the effects of DEHP exposure on cardiac toxicity and the regulation of HSR, male quail were fed the diet with 0, 25

Phthalates are widely used as plasticizer and associated with various health issues. Recently, non-phthalate plasticizers are replacing phthalates; however, the exposure to these substances and the risk in Japan is unclear. In this study, we assessed the concentrations of phthalates, non-phthalate plasticizers, and phthalate degradation products in house dust and determined their respective exposure risks via oral and dermal routes. Twelve phthalates, seven non-phthalate plasticizers, and two degradation products were determined in the house dust obtained from 100 Japanese homes. The median co

Human biomonitoring provides a scientific approach that systematically reveals exposure to phthalates through all possible routes. In this pilot study, fingernail was chosen as a non-destructive biospecimen to assess human exposure to nine phthalates. Concentrations of total phthalates ranged from 17.8 to 176 µg/g (median: 65.4 µg/g). Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and di-isobutyl phthalate were the major compounds found in fingernails, accounting for 64.3%, 19.4%, and 12.9% of the total phthalates, respectively. No significant difference in phthalates concentrations was

To date, regulatory agencies have not considered conducting cumulative risk assessments for mixtures of chemicals with diverse mechanisms of toxicity because it is assumed that the chemicals will act independently and the individual chemical doses are not additive. However, this assumption is not supported by new research addressing the joint effects of chemicals that disrupt reproductive tract development in the male rat by disrupting the androgen signalling pathway via diverse mechanisms of toxicity [i.e. androgen receptor (AR) antagonism in the reproductive tract vs. inhibition of androgen

OBJECTIVES: Metabolic disorders, as multifactorial disorders, are induced by genetic susceptibility and exposure to environmental chemicals. Di (2-ethyl hexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a ubiquitous plasticizer, is well known as an endocrine-disrupting chemical in living organisms. In recent decades, researchers have focused on the potential of DEHP and its main metabolite (Mono (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) (MEHP) to induce metabolic disorders. In the present review, we aimed to summarize studies regarding DEHP and MEHP-induced Metabolic syndrome (MetS) as well as address the involved mechanisms.

The toxicity of the endocrine disruptor di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) has been extensively studied for its hormonal dysregulation, obesogenic effect and associated metabolic diseases. DEHP's primary substitute di-isononyl phthalate (DINP), however, although increased in annual production globally, requires better understanding of its health effect. Our previous work reported disruptions in plasma lipid profiles, but the metabolic responses following phthalate exposure in the liver, particularly the entire hepatic lipidome, have been lacking. A targeted lipidomic technique was applied to ac

Electromembrane extraction (EME) of polar basic drugs from human plasma was investigated for the first time using pure bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphite (DEHPi) as the supported liquid membrane (SLM). The polar basic drugs metaraminol, benzamidine, sotalol, phenylpropanolamine, ephedrine, and trimethoprim were selected as model analytes, and were extracted from 300 μL of human plasma, through 10 μL of DEHPi as SLM, and into 100 μL of 10 mM formic acid as acceptor solution. The extraction potential across the SLM was 100 V, and extractions were performed for 20 min. After EME, the acceptor solutions
