Demonstration of acute retinal ischemia on diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

In this case, we demonstrate the ability of diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging to localize retinal ischemia in a patient with acute vision loss. MRI is widely used for the evaluation of acute stroke, but there has only been one other case report showing the ability of DWI to rapidly localize retinal pathology, including central retinal artery occlusion [1]. Central retinal artery occlusion is an ocular emergency presenting with acute, painless loss of vision as a result of retinal ischemia. This case demonstrates the role of diffusion weighted imaging as an adjunctive test in the pr

Using structural and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging to differentiate the dementias.

Dementia is one of the major causes of personal, societal and financial dependence in older people and in today's ageing society there is a pressing need for early and accurate markers of cognitive decline. There are several subtypes of dementia but the four most common are Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia, vascular dementia and frontotemporal dementia. These disorders can only be diagnosed at autopsy, and ante-mortem assessments of "probable dementia (e.g. of Alzheimer type)" are traditionally driven by clinical symptoms of cognitive or behavioural deficits. However, owing to the overl

The evolving role of diffusion magnetic resonance imaging in movement disorders.

Significant advances have allowed diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evolve into a powerful tool in the field of movement disorders that can be used to study disease states and connectivity between brain regions. Diffusion MRI is a promising potential biomarker for Parkinson's disease and other forms of parkinsonism, and may allow the distinction of different forms of parkinsonism. Techniques such as tractography have contributed to our current thinking regarding the pathophysiology of dystonia and possible mechanisms of penetrance. Diffusion MRI measures could potentially assist in

Diagnostic utility of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in diabetic mastopathy.

We report the clinical findings in a 36-year-old woman with diabetic mastopathy. The lesion showed heterogeneous segmental enhancement on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), resembling a malignant lesion, but diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) showed no abnormalities and the apparent diffusion coefficient value did not decrease. This case emphasizes the utility of DWI for differentiating diabetic mastopathy from malignant breast lesions. The value of DWI lies in its ability to exclude the possibility of malignant breast lesions and thus to avoid unnecessary biopsy.

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in rhombencephalitis due to Listeria monocytogenes.

We present diffusion-weighted imaging findings of a case of rhombencephalitis due to Listeria monocytogenes. It is a rare, life-threatening disorder. The diagnosis is difficult by clinical findings only. In this report, we aim to draw attention to the role of conventional and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging findings. To our knowledge, this is the first case report in the literature with apparent diffusion coefficient values of diseased brain parenchyma.

Brain morphometry using diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging: application to schizophrenia.

Loss of cortical gray matter is accompanied by a commensurate increase in the sulcal and intraventricular cerebrospinal fluid volume. On diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, this would be reflected as a higher apparent diffusion coefficient in affected brain regions. On the basis of the above premise, we suggest that the apparent diffusion coefficient may be used as a surrogate marker for the assessment of regional brain volume deficits. We demonstrate this approach by voxelwise analysis of registered apparent diffusion coefficient images from a group of 15 patients with schizophreni

Examining the lacunar hypothesis with diffusion and perfusion magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: The clinical diagnosis of subcortical cerebral infarction is inaccurate for lesion location and pathogenesis. Clinically suspected small perforating artery occlusions may be embolic infarcts, with important implications for investigation and treatment. New MRI techniques may allow more accurate determination of the stroke mechanism soon after admission. METHODS: In a prospective series of 106 patients evaluated with acute diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) and perfusion-weighted MRI (PWI) within 24 hours of stroke, we enrolled 19 with a lacunar syndrome. On the basis of the topography,

[Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in acute brain stem infarction].

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) provides one of the earliest demonstrations of ischemic lesions. However, some lesions may be missed in the acute stage due to technical limitation of DWI. We therefore conducted the study to clarify the sensitivity of DWI to acute brain stem infarctions. Twenty-eight patients with the final diagnosis of brain stem infarction(midbrain 2, pons 9, medulla oblongata 17) who had been examined by DWI within 24 hours of onset were retrospectively analyzed for how sensitively the initial DWI demonstrated the final ischemic lesion. Only obvious(disti

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of the pancreas: A narrative review.

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) has become an essential tool in the field of pancreatic magnetic resonance imaging, enabling the detection, characterization, prediction, and evaluation of pancreatic diseases. In this article, we review the acquisition parameters, postprocessing techniques, and quantitative methods utilized in pancreatic DWI. Various postprocessing models, including monoexponential, biexponential, stretched exponential and non-Gaussian kurtosis models, as well as deep learning networks, have been used to assess the clinical utility of these models in diagnos

White matter correlates of cognition: A diffusion magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Our comprehension of the interplay of cognition and the brain remains constrained. While functional imaging studies have identified cognitive brain regions, structural correlates of cognitive functions remain underexplored. Advanced methods like Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DMRI) facilitate the exploration of brain connectivity and White Matter (WM) tract microstructure. Therefore, we conducted connectometry method on DMRI data, to reveal WM tracts associated with cognition. METHODS: 125 healthy participants from the National Institute of Mental Health Intramural Healthy

Characterization of anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity by diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging.

Anthracyclines are highly potent anti-cancer drugs, but their clinical use is limited by severe cardiotoxic side effects. The impact of anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity (AIC) on left ventricular (LV) microarchitecture and diffusion properties remains unknown. This study sought to characterize AIC by cardiovascular magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Mice were treated with Doxorubicin (DOX; n = 16) for induction of AIC or saline as corresponding control (n = 15). Cardiac function was assessed via echocardiography at the end of the study period. Whole hearts (n = 8 per group)

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging is useful for assessing inflammatory myopathies.

INTRODUCTION: Short tau inversion recovery (STIR) sequences in whole-body MRI are usually used for detecting muscle edema (ME) in inflammatory myopathies. We evaluated b-value 800 diffusion-weighted imaging (b800 DWI). METHODS: Two radiologists independently and a consensus reader retrospectively reexamined 60 patients with inflammatory myopathies and 15 controls. For each participant, 78 muscles were analyzed with 3 sets of imaging acquisitions: T1-weighted (T1) turbo spin echo and STIR; T1 and DWI; and T1, STIR and DWI. Mean edema per patient was compared between sequences. Agreement was ev

Diffusion and perfusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging techniques in stroke recovery.

Most of the functional recovery after stroke takes place during the first three months after the insult. The neuronal mechanisms underlying this recovery are presently mostly unknown. However, in order to create efficient rehabilitation programs, it is of great importance to uncover these mechanisms. Multiple imaging techniques have been employed for the detection and characterization of ischemic lesions in the brain as well as monitoring of processes associated with stroke recovery. Diffusion and perfusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging techniques are easy and fast to perform and provide
