Amphiphilic hydrolyzable polydimethylsiloxane-b-poly(ethyleneglycol methacrylate-co-trialkylsilyl methacrylate) block copolymers for marine coatings. II. Antifouling laboratory tests and field trials.

Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elastomer coatings containing an amphiphilic hydrolyzable diblock copolymer additive were prepared and their potential as marine antifouling and antiadhesion materials was tested. The block copolymer additive consisted of a PDMS first block and a random poly(trialkylsilyl methacrylate (TRSiMA, R = butyl, isopropyl)-co-poly(ethyleneglycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) copolymer second block. PDMS-b-TRSiMA block copolymer additives without PEGMA units were also used as additives. The amphiphilic character of the coating surface was assessed in water using the captive air bu

Preparation of Membrane Protein-Functionalized Polymer and Polymer/Lipid Hybrid Large and Giant Unilamellar Vesicles.

Vesicles formed from amphiphilic copolymers, alone or blended with phospholipids, offer superior mechanical and chemical stability compared to conventional lipid vesicles. This makes them an attractive chassis, one that can be further developed and expanded to enable specific applications, such as drug delivery, diagnostic biosensing, construction of artificial cells, and bioinspired micro- and nanoreactors. In particular, functionalization through membrane protein incorporation is essential for many of these applications. Here, we present a protocol for preparing membrane protein-functionaliz

Interfacial Adhesive Adaptation Strategies for Flexible Multilayer Pressure Sensors in Sleep Monitoring.

Flexible devices assembled with low-surface-energy PDMS substrates often face challenges, such as poor interfacial adhesion among multilayer films and mismatched mechanical moduli, complicating the development of stable and repeatable pressure sensors. Herein, a PDMS with internal dynamic cross-linking ability is synthesized to alleviate these issues, which shows good tensile properties, flexibility, and self-healing ability at room temperature. Taking advantage of the material homogeneity, the electrodes and sensing layer of the sensor made of the composite ink and PDMS, serving as the additi

Piezoelectric PDMS/AlN Film for Osteogenesis in Vitro.

Bone defect and nonunion are complex diseases which are difficult to treat due to insufficient bone regeneration. Electrical stimulation has attracted attention as a promising strategy to induce and enhance bone regeneration. Self-powered and biocompatible materials have been widely explored and used in biomedical devices, owing to their ability to produce electrical stimulation without an external power source. We aimed to prepare a piezoelectric polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/aluminum nitride (AlN) film with excellent biocompatibility and osteoconductive ability for the growth of murine calvari

Particulate synovitis granuloma complication following a first metatarsophalangeal joint silastic implant.

This case presents a known complication of particulate synovitis granuloma associated with a first metatarsophalangeal joint silastic implant. However, the degree of soft tissue granuloma enlargement is quite unique in size and its proliferative effect-invading the medulla cavity and infiltrating the outer cortex of bone. This case study aims to demonstrate its clinical presentation, imaging investigations, surgical excision and histopathology findings. The learning points emphasised within this manuscript draw attention to the procedure selection for a silastic implant, as well as its propose

Analysis of N-acetyl cysteine modified polydimethylsiloxane shunt for improved treatment of hydrocephalus.

A major cause of hydrocephalus shunt failure is cell adhesion and obstruction of shunt catheter holes. An estimated 50% of pediatric shunts fail in the first 2 years of insertion, decreasing cell attachment and catheter obstruction can prolong the lifetime and effectiveness of the device. From previous studies, it was shown that treatment of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface of a standard catheter with an N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC/1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylanimopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide) layer increases the wettability of the surface and has been shown to decrease ce

Hallux rigidus: MTP implant arthroplasty.

Hallux rigidus or osteoarthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint is characterized by pain, stiffness of the joint, and alterations of gait. The appeal of joint arthroplasty for hallux rigidus is similar to its benefits in other joints in the body. The ideal implant should relieve pain, restore motion, improve function, and maintain joint stability. Numerous implants have been described for the hallux metatarsophalangeal joint. This article discusses various implant options along with clinical outcomes and complications.

Surface modification with well-defined biocompatible triblock copolymers Improvement of biointerfacial phenomena on a poly(dimethylsiloxane) surface.

To improve interfacial phenomena of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as biomaterials, well-defined triblock copolymers were prepared as coating materials by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) controlled polymerization. Hydroxy-terminated poly(vinylmethylsiloxane-co-dimethylsiloxane) (HO-PV(l)D(m)MS-OH) was synthesized by ring-opening polymerization. The copolymerization ratio of vinylmethylsiloxane to dimethylsiloxane was 1/9. The molecular weight of HO-PV(l)D(m)MS-OH ranged from (1.43 to 4.44)x10(4), and their molecular weight distribution (M(w)/M(n)) as determined by size-e

In vitro release testing of levonorgestrel intrauterine systems: Correlation of accelerated release rates in organic/aqueous release media to Hansen Solubility Parameters.

Levonorgestrel intrauterine systems (LNG-IUSs) are poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS)-based long-acting drug delivery systems. No generic versions of LNG-IUSs are available; this is due, in part, to challenging aspects of developing and testing these products. One issue is the long timescale of real-time in vitro release tests (IVRTs) and the difficulty of developing accelerated IVRTs. This study developed a correlation between accelerated release rates in organic/aqueous release media and the Hansen Solubility Parameters (HSPs) of LNG, PDMS, and the release media. This study had three parts. Firs

The Orientation of Human Fibrinogen at Biomedically Relevant Polydimethylsiloxane-Water Interfaces.

The adsorption of fibrinogen on biomaterial surfaces, particularly polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), plays a key role in foreign body reactions and has recently been shown to be one of the main factors driving catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). Yet, despite detailed studies on the fibrinogen's solution and crystal structures, its behavior at material interfaces is less understood. Using sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy and structural modeling, we determined the binding pose and conformation of human fibrinogen at the PDMS-buffer interface. Fibrinogen adopts an upright

Micro-textured silicone-based implant fabrication using electrospun fibers as a sacrificial template to suppress fibrous capsule formation.

Conventionally, macro-textured surfaces comprising several hundred micrometer-sized patterns are used to minimize silicone-based breast implant complications, including capsular contracture. However, because of the recent cases of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma from macro-textured implants, there is a strong demand for nano- or micro-textured silicone implants with dimensions smaller than sub-micrometers. Herein, we propose a simple and cost-effective topographical surface modification strategy for silicone-based implants. Several hundred nanometer to sub-micrometer w

Cellulose-based hybrid glycosilicones via grafted-to metal-catalyzed hydrosilylation: "When opposites unite".

Hydrosilylation catalyzed by the rhodium(I) complex [Rh(acac)(CO)2] or platinum(0)-based Karstedt's catalyst was employed to combine hydrophilic propargylated hydroxyethyl cellulose and hydrophobic hydride-terminated polydimethylsiloxane to give polymer hybrid structures. The final polymers were characterized by FTIR, solid state 1H, 13C and 29Si NMR, contact angle, microcalorimetry and thermogravimetry measurements. The grafting degree was controlled by the catalyst choice and by the reagent load variations; an increase of the polysiloxane load and a change from Karstedt's to the rhodium cata

Biocompatible patterning of proteins on wettability gradient surface by thermo-transfer printing.

We develop a simple and biocompatible method of patterning proteins on a wettability gradient surface by thermo-transfer printing. The wettability gradient is produced on a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-modified glass substrate through the temperature gradient during thermo-transfer printing. The water contact angle on the PDMS-modified surface is found to gradually increase along the direction of the temperature gradient from a low to a high temperature region. Based on the wettability gradient, the gradual change in the adsorption and immobilization of proteins (cholera toxin B subunit) is a
