Cytotoxic effect of palytoxin on mussel.

Palytoxin is a large and complex polyhydroxylated molecule with potent neurotoxic activity. Dinoflagellates from the Ostreopsis genera were demonstrated to be producers of this compound and analogues. Even though initially palytoxin appearance was restricted to tropical areas, the recent occurrence of Ostreopsis outbreaks in Mediterranean Sea point to a worldwide dissemination probably related to climatic change. Those dinoflagellates can bioaccumulate in shellfish, especially in filter-feeding mollusks and have been involved in damaging effects in seafood or human toxic outbreaks. The present

Rapid coral bleaching recovery via symbiont transfer from healthy corals.

Coral bleaching, the temperature-induced loss of dinoflagellate symbionts, is a major driver of global coral reef decline. Although corals can regain symbionts through repopulation of residual symbionts or via environmental acquisition, these processes are often too slow to prevent coral mortality. Mechanisms that enable rapid and effective symbiont reintroduction leading to full recovery remain largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate coral bleaching recovery through contact-mediated transfer of symbionts from healthy corals using small coral fragments. We show that symbiont transfer is rapid, o

Widespread siderophore production among Symbiodiniaceae-associated bacteria.

Nutritional exchanges fuel the evolutionary and ecological dominance of multi-partner symbioses among reef-building corals and microbial associates in oligotrophic tropical marine ecosystems. Mutualistic relationships with endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (Family Symbiodiniaceae) are central to coral holobiont metabolism, yet their metabolic contributions are sensitive to nutrient availability. Symbiodiniaceae may compensate for oligotrophic environments via metabolic exchanges with prokaryotic partners. Bacterial production of ligands with affinities for otherwise insoluble elements promotes upt

Upwelling-driven vertical segregation of co-occurring phytoplankton, including HAB species, revealed by niche analyses.

Recurrent toxic blooms of Alexandrium minutum, Pseudo-nitzschia spp. and Dinophysis acuminata, impact the European shellfish industry. In temperate latitude embayments with spring-summer upwelling, reset phytoplankton mini-successions develop during short-term (a few days) wind-driven events interspersed by relaxation or downwelling. High resolution observations were made at a reference station during cruise "REMEDIOS-TLP", 2-14 July 2018 to explore assembly dynamics (cluster analysis) and niche structuring (OMI and WitOMI) processes during a relaxation-upwelling event. A well-mixed "Relaxatio

Light-based 3D printing of mechanoluminescent living gels loaded with dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates, a group of marine unicellular algae, are known for the fascinating glowing effects in coastal waters. While this natural mechanoluminescent phenomenon has been explored in pressure sensors and optical transducers, technologies to shape dinoflagellate-containing materials into more complex, engineering-relevant geometries remain limited. Here, we report a three-dimensional printing strategy to manufacture complex-shaped mechanoluminescent objects using dinoflagellates embedded in biocompatible hydrogels. The growth and mechanoluminescence of the entrapped dinoflagellates were i

Spatial distribution of prokaryotes in a harmful dinoflagellate bloom near the Huangqi Peninsula, Fujian, China.

In recent decades, increasingly frequent harmful algal blooms (HABs) have severely impacted the coastal aquaculture across China, but the mechanisms underlying their initiation and termination remain unclear. Emerging evidence suggests that planktonic prokaryotes potentially play a critical role in HAB dynamics. Using 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing, this study investigated the spatial variations in planktonic prokaryotic communities during a mixed Prorocentrum and Karenia bloom in Lianjiang coastal waters in late May 2024. The results revealed that the bloom significantly reduced bacteria

Ecological insights from field and laboratory studies of Akashiwo sanguinea.

Blooms of the dinoflagellate Akashiwo sanguinea occur in coastal ecosystems worldwide and can have significant ecological consequences. Along the central California coast, long-term oceanographic and harmful algal bloom observations indicate that A. sanguinea has exhibited seasonal blooms since approximately 2017, coinciding with negative upwelling anomalies and warm, stratified conditions characteristic of late summer and early fall. In laboratory experiments, three A. sanguinea strains isolated from different sites and/or environmental conditions along the central California coast exhibited

Long-Read Sequencing Unlocks New Insights into the Amphidinium carterae Microbiome.

Dinoflagellates are one of the largest groups of marine microalgae and exhibit diverse trophic strategies. Some dinoflagellates can produce secondary metabolites that are known to be toxic, which can lead to ecologically harmful blooms. Amphidinium carterae is one species of dinoflagellate that produces toxic compounds and is used as a model for dinoflagellate studies. The impact of the microbiome on A. carterae growth and metabolite synthesis is not yet fully understood, nor is the impact of bacterial data on sequencing and assembly. An antibiotic cocktail was previously shown to eliminate 16

Exposure to the mixotrophic dinoflagellate Lepidodinium sp. and its cues increase toxin production of Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries.

The present study examined the defense responses of toxigenic Pseudo-nitzschia species (P. multiseries) to a mixotrophic dinoflagellate, Lepidodinium sp., and its associated cues. We evaluated their responses to different predation risks, including direct physical contact and indirect interactions facilitated by cues from Lepidodinium sp. during active feeding on heterospecific prey (Rhodonomas salina), limited feeding on conspecific prey (P. multiseries) and non-feeding (autotrophic growth in f/2 medium) states. This study is the first investigation of these trophic interactions. Our results

Ingestion of paralytic shellfish toxins in a carnivorous gastropod (Chorus giganteus): effects on their elemental composition and reproductive traits.

The producer of paralytic shellfish toxin (PST), Alexandrium catenella, is one of the main generators of HABs in the coasts of Chile. Its presence produces ecological and economic damage, directly affecting filter-feeding organisms, and indirectly to other organism through the trophic chain. The objective of this research was to identify the effect of a toxic diet on the energetic and reproductive parameters of the carnivorous snail Chorus giganteus. Two groups of snails were used, one fed with toxic prey (bivalves fed with A. catenella), and the other fed with non-toxic prey. Both treatments

Dissolved organic nitrogen, dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria in two eutrophic lakes: Analysis by inferential modelling.

The Lake Suwa (Japan) has a history of non-N-fixing Microcystis blooms. Lake Kinneret (Israel) experienced multiannual periods of sole domination by the dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense and periods dominated seasonally by P. gatunense or cyanobacteria. Extensive studies have been carried out in both lakes regarding the role of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus as drivers of primary productivity. There is growing evidence that dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) compounds also influence not only biomass and structure of phytoplankton communities but also microcystin production. This s

Amphidinolides F and C2: An Odyssey in Total Synthesis.

Amphidinolides F, C, C2, and C3 are marine natural products isolated from dinoflagellates Amphidinium species. They share the same macrolactone core, with the difference between them residing at the side chain level. A predominant feature of these amphidinolides is the presence of two trans-THF rings inside the macrolactone core, which is thought to be built by C-glycosylation with titanium enolate of N-acetyl oxazolinethiones. Thus, the original strategy for their total synthesis was based on the assembly of three main fragments corresponding to C1-C9, C10-C19, and C20-C29 or C20-C34 disconne

Changes in Toxin Production, Morphology and Viability of Gymnodinium catenatum Associated with Allelopathy of Chattonella marina var. marina and Gymnodinium impudicum.

Allelopathy between phytoplankton organisms is promoted by substances released into the marine environment that limit the presence of the dominating species. We evaluated the allelopathic effects and response of cell-free media of Chattonella marina var. marina and Gymnodinium impudicum in the toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum. Additionally, single- and four-cell chains of G. catenatum isolated from media with allelochemicals were cultured to evaluate the effects of post exposure on growth and cell viability. Cell diagnosis showed growth limitation and an increase in cell volume, whic

Stereocontrolled Synthesis of C20S-C26 and C20R-C26 Fragments of Amphidinolide L.

Amphidinolide L is a cytotoxic macrolide isolated from marine symbiotic dinoflagellates of the genus Amphidinium. While its planar structure and the absolute stereochemistry of the C21-C26 part have been determined, six stereocenters have remained unassigned. Aiming at structure determination, we have developed a synthetic route to the C20S-C26 and C20R-C26 fragments via the Li-mediated stereocontrolled aldol reaction. Two aldehydes, 16 with the C22-hydroxy group and 19 with the C22-TES ether, were synthesized from lactone 4. The aldol reactions using the Li-enolate of 4-methyl-2-pentanone in

Cell carbon content and biomass assessments of dinoflagellates and diatoms in the oceanic ecosystem of the Southern Gulf of Mexico.

This study assessed the cell carbon content and biomass for genera of dinoflagellates and diatoms in the oceanic ecosystem of the Southern Gulf of Mexico. Carbon content estimates were based on biovolume calculations derived from linear dimension measurements of individual cells and the approximate geometric body shape of each genus. Then, biomass assessments were performed for both groups in two gulf regions (Perdido and Coatzacoalcos) using these carbon content factors and cell abundances. After four seasonal cruises, 11,817 cells of dinoflagellates and 3,412 cells of diatoms were analyzed.

Fate of Paralytic Shellfish Toxins in Southern Rock Lobster ( Jasus edwardsii) during Cooking: Concentration, Composition, and Distribution.

Paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) producing microalgal blooms have a significant economic impact on the Southern Rock Lobster ( Jasus edwardsii) fishery in Tasmania, Australia. The regulatory level of 0.8 mg of saxitoxin (STX) eq/kg in place for bivalve shellfish fisheries is applied to lobster hepatopancreas during blooms of toxic algae, resulting in harvest closures and ongoing risk management implications for the fishery. This cooking study was undertaken to inform a human health risk assessment, in conjunction with studies on the uptake and elimination of PST in J. edwardsii. Live lobsters i

Spatio-temporal dynamics and biotic substrate preferences of benthic dinoflagellates in the Lesser Antilles, Caribbean sea.

Epibenthic dinoflagellates were monitored monthly over an 18 month period in Guadeloupe and Martinique (Lesser Antilles, Caribbean Sea). These islands are located in the second most affected ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) region of the world. Guadeloupe presented five times more total epibenthic dinoflagellates and two times less abundant Gambierdiscus spp. compared to Martinique, although the area of frequent CFP outbreaks covers Guadeloupe and not Martinique. Results did not show any clear seasonal variations of benthic dinoflagellates abundances. Temperature and salinity were not driving pa
