Unexpected Convergent Evolution of Nasal Domes between Pleistocene Bovids and Cretaceous Hadrosaur Dinosaurs.

The fossil record provides tangible, historical evidence for the mode and operation of evolution across deep time. Striking patterns of convergence are some of the strongest examples of these operations, whereby, over time, similar environmental and/or behavioral pressures precipitate similarity in form and function between disparately related taxa. Here we present fossil evidence for an unexpected convergence between gregarious plant-eating mammals and dinosaurs. Recent excavations of Late Pleistocene deposits on Rusinga Island, Kenya, have uncovered a catastrophic assemblage of the wildebees

Did the evolution of multiple microchromosomes help save bird and other dinosaurs from extinction?

Birds currently number ∼11,000 species and, despite enormous biodiversity, have numerous class-specific characteristics including feathers, flight, nesting, brooding, longevity and a very distinctive karyotype. Central to several academic fields including developmental biology, agriculture, virology, neurobiology, evolution, ecology and conservation, many birds have a fully-sequenced genome assemblies; aligning these to the karyotype (chromosome level assembly), is key to understanding avian biology and evolution. The "signature" avian karyotype (∼2n = 80) of these Therapod dinosaurs, many of

Diving dinosaurs? Caveats on the use of bone compactness and pFDA for inferring lifestyle.

The lifestyle of spinosaurid dinosaurs has been a topic of lively debate ever since the unveiling of important new skeletal parts for Spinosaurus aegyptiacus in 2014 and 2020. Disparate lifestyles for this taxon have been proposed in the literature; some have argued that it was semiaquatic to varying degrees, hunting fish from the margins of water bodies, or perhaps while wading or swimming on the surface; others suggest that it was a fully aquatic underwater pursuit predator. The various proposals are based on equally disparate lines of evidence. A recent study by Fabbri and coworkers sought

First Documented Pathologies in Tenontosaurus tilletti with Comments on Infection in Non-Avian Dinosaurs.

In 2001, a nearly complete sub-adult Tenontosaurus tilletti was collected from the Antlers Formation (Aptian-Albian) of southeastern Oklahoma. Beyond its exceptional preservation, computed tomography (CT) and physical examination revealed this specimen has five pathological elements with four of the pathologies a result of trauma. Left pedal phalanx I-1 and left dorsal rib 10 are both fractured with extensive callus formation in the later stages of healing. Left dorsal rib 7 (L7) and right dorsal rib 10 (R10) exhibit impacted fractures compressed 26 mm and 24 mm, respectively. The fracture mor

Cartilaginous epiphyses in extant archosaurs and their implications for reconstructing limb function in dinosaurs.

Extinct archosaurs, including many non-avian dinosaurs, exhibit relatively simply shaped condylar regions in their appendicular bones, suggesting potentially large amounts of unpreserved epiphyseal (articular) cartilage. This "lost anatomy" is often underappreciated such that the ends of bones are typically considered to be the joint surfaces, potentially having a major impact on functional interpretation. Extant alligators and birds were used to establish an objective basis for inferences about cartilaginous articular structures in such extinct archosaur clades as non-avian dinosaurs. Limb el

Exceptional dinosaur fossils reveal early origin of avian-style digestion.

Birds have a highly specialized and efficient digestive system, but when this system originated remains uncertain. Here we report six gastric pellets attributable to the recently discovered 160-million-year-old troodontid dinosaur Anchiornis, which is among the key taxa for understanding the transition to birds. The gastric pellets contain lightly acid-etched lizard bones or fish scales, and some are associated with Anchiornis skeletons or even situated within the oesophagus. Anchiornis is the earliest and most basal theropod known to have produced gastric pellets. In combination with other li

Gas exchange potential in reptilian lungs: implications for the dinosaur-avian connection.

The theory that birds evolved from a group of small terrestrial theropod dinosaurs has created much controversy. One argument proposed against this theory is that the lungs of early theropods were incapable of sustaining endothermic gas exchange requirements and could not have given rise to the lungs of birds. A reexamination of the comparative physiological and morphological literature combined with a theoretical analysis of gas exchange potential indicates that non-avian lungs would not constrain the gas exchange requirements of early endotherms. Furthermore, our analysis suggests that facto

Evolution of the axial skeleton of early dinosaurs and the role of meristic and homeotic processes.

Changes in the axial skeleton played an important role in dinosaur evolution, with some of the oldest dinosaurs showing evidence of sacralization events. The increased number of early dinosaur discoveries over the last decade provides an opportunity to better characterize this phenomenon. It has led us to revise our understanding of axial evolution in early dinosaurs. Results support that the last common ancestor of Dinosauria would probably present 9 cervical, 16 dorsal and 2 sacral vertebrae (primordials). Early saurischians maintain a consistent number of vertebrae with presacral origin, an

Cellular-level preservation of cutaneous spikes in an Early Cretaceous iguanodontian dinosaur.

The near-complete and articulated skeleton of a new iguanodontian dinosaur, Haolong dongi gen. et sp. nov., from the Lower Cretaceous of northeastern China, preserves exquisitely fossilized skin. The integument includes large overlapping scutate scales along the tail and tuberculate scales around the neck and thorax markedly different from the scale pattern described in other iguanodontians. Remarkably, these scales are interspersed with cutaneous spikes preserved at the cellular level. Tomographic and histological analyses reveal a hollow, cylindrical structure composed of a cornified stratum

Deep learning enables automated detection of dinosaur footprints with high accuracy.

Dinosaur footprints provide crucial paleoecological information about locomotion, behavior, and tracksite distributions. Traditional tracksite surveys rely on time-consuming manual identification by expert researchers, with results influenced by preservation quality and subjective interpretation. Here, we present an automated detection system for dinosaur footprints using You Only Look Once version 8 (YOLOv8), an effective object detection neural network. We trained the model on 49,242 images from the AI-Hub dataset, comprising theropod, ornithopod, and sauropod footprints from Korean tracksit

Mesozoic atmospheric CO2 concentrations reconstructed from dinosaur tooth enamel.

Air-breathing vertebrates incorporate a fraction of isotopically anomalous air O2 in their body water. The 17O isotope anomaly of air O2 (expressed as Δ'17Oair) is related to atmospheric CO2 concentrations (pCO2) and gross primary production (GPP). Tooth enamel records the Δ'17O of body water and can thus preserve such paleo-pCO2 or paleo-GPP information over geological time periods. Here, we demonstrate the potential of respective reconstructions of atmospheric pCO2 or GPP from the triple oxygen isotope composition of fossil dinosaur tooth enamel. The data from unaltered enamel samples, along

The first occurrence of an avian-style respiratory infection in a non-avian dinosaur.

Other than repaired fractures, osteoarthritis, and periosteal reaction, the vertebrate fossil record has limited evidence of non-osseous diseases. This difficulty in paleontological diagnoses stems from (1) the inability to conduct medical testing, (2) soft-tissue pathologic structures are less likely to be preserved, and (3) many osseous lesions are not diagnostically specific. However, here reported for the first time is an avian-style respiratory disorder in a non-avian dinosaur. This sauropod presents irregular bony pathologic structures stemming from the pneumatic features in the cervical

Unusual pectoral apparatus in a predatory dinosaur resolves avian wishbone homology.

The furcula is a distinctive element of the pectoral skeleton in birds, which strengthens the shoulder region to withstand the rigor of flight. Although its origin among theropod dinosaurs is now well-supported, the homology of the furcula relative to the elements of the tetrapod pectoral girdle (i.e., interclavicle vs clavicles) remains controversial. Here, we report the identification of the furcula in the birdlike theropod Halszkaraptor escuilliei. The bone is unique among furculae in non-avian dinosaurs in bearing a visceral articular facet in the hypocleideal end firmly joined to and over

Dinosaur ossification centres in embryonic birds uncover developmental evolution of the skull.

Radical transformation of the skull characterizes bird evolution. An increase in the relative size of the brain and eyes was presumably related to the loss of two bones surrounding the eye, the prefrontal and postorbital. We report that ossification centres of the prefrontal and postorbital are still formed in bird embryos, which then fuse seamlessly to the developing nasal and frontal bones, respectively, becoming undetectable in the adult. The presence of a dinosaur-like ossification pattern in bird embryos is more than a trace of their evolutionary past: we show how persistent modularity of

Unusual endosteally formed bone tissue in a patagonian basal sauropodomorph dinosaur.

Mussaurus patagonicus (Dinosauria: Sauropodomorpha) is a basal sauropodomorph from the Late Triassic of southern Argentina that is known from a large number of individuals, including juveniles, subadults, and adults. Here, we report on the occurrence of an unusual bone tissue in an individual of M. patagonicus. The rather atypical bone tissue is located within the femoral medullary cavity and also occurs within several erosion cavities of the midinner part of the cortex. This tissue is well vascularized and is composed of a matrix that consists of abundant and densely packed osteocyte lacunae.

Tyrant dinosaur evolution tracks the rise and fall of Late Cretaceous oceans.

The Late Cretaceous (∼95-66 million years ago) western North American landmass of Laramidia displayed heightened non-marine vertebrate diversity and intracontinental regionalism relative to other latest Cretaceous Laurasian ecosystems. Processes generating these patterns during this interval remain poorly understood despite their presumed role in the diversification of many clades. Tyrannosauridae, a clade of large-bodied theropod dinosaurs restricted to the Late Cretaceous of Laramidia and Asia, represents an ideal group for investigating Laramidian patterns of evolution. We use new tyrannosa

An aberrant island-dwelling theropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of Romania.

Islands are noted for the occurrence of aberrant, endemic, and dwarfed taxa (the "island effect"). Late Cretaceous vertebrate assemblages of Romania and elsewhere in Europe are classic examples of island faunas in the fossil record, and are characterized by dwarfed herbivorous dinosaurs and other endemic taxa that are noticeably primitive relative to their mainland contemporaries. Fossils of the predators inhabiting the European paleoislands, however, are exceptionally rare and fragmentary. We describe a new dromaeosaurid theropod, based on an articulated skeleton from the Maastrichtian of Rom

Endocranial development in non-avian dinosaurs reveals an ontogenetic brain trajectory distinct from extant archosaurs.

Modern birds possess highly encephalized brains that evolved from non-avian dinosaurs. Evolutionary shifts in developmental timing, namely juvenilization of adult phenotypes, have been proposed as a driver of head evolution along the dinosaur-bird transition, including brain morphology. Testing this hypothesis requires a sufficient developmental sampling of brain morphology in non-avian dinosaurs. In this study, we harness brain endocasts of a postnatal growth series of the ornithischian dinosaur Psittacosaurus and several other immature and mature non-avian dinosaurs to investigate how evolut

Dental histology of Coelophysis bauri and the evolution of tooth attachment tissues in early dinosaurs.

Studies of dinosaur teeth have focused primarily on external crown morphology and thus, use shed or in situ tooth crowns, and are limited to the enamel and dentine dental tissues. As a result, the full suites of periodontal tissues that attach teeth to the jaws remain poorly documented, particularly in early dinosaurs. These tissues are an integral part of the tooth and thus essential to a more complete understanding of dental anatomy, development, and evolution in dinosaurs. To identify the tooth attachment tissues in early dinosaurs, histological thin sections were prepared from the maxilla
