Dipetalonema viteae infective larvae reach reproductive maturity in rats immunodepressed by prior exposure to Schistosoma mansoni or its products and in congenitally athymic rats.

Infective larvae of Dipetalonema viteae did not reach maturity in inbred Fischer rats. However, female adults of D. viteae when transplanted surgically into Fischer rats established and the resulting microfilaraemia from the transplanted worms persisted for about 120 days after infection. Sequential dissections showed that some of the female worms transplanted remained viable in rats for about 35 days after infection. After inoculation of infective larvae into rats a varying number transformed into stage-4 larvae but they did not develop into adult worms and were killed. However, when the rats

Detection of IgE antibodies in onchocerciasis. Possibility of using allergens from Dipetalonema viteae extracts that cross-react with allergenic determinants in crude extracts of Onchocerca volvulus.

The present study reports the presence of Onchocerca volvulus specific IgE in the sera obtained from onchocerciasis patients. About 70% of onchocerciasis patients showed a raised level of O. volvulus specific IgE compared to patients infected either with other human filarids (Loa loa, Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi) or with other helminths (Schistosoma mansoni, Ascaris lumbricoides, Fasciola hepatica). The O. volvulus specific IgE level was significantly higher in patients exhibiting 'gale filarienne' than in microfilaremic patients or in endemic controls. The total IgE level was signific

Camel filariasis (Dipetalonema evansi) and its association with clinical balanoposthitis with reference to prominent changes in clinical findings, serum testosterone, semen analysis, and testicular histopathology.

BACKGROUND: Camel filariasis induced variable clinical syndromes characterized by fever, lethargy, localized dermal lesions, loss of condition, and testicular and scrotal swelling. The objective of the present work focused on clarifying the diagnostic importance of clinical findings, serum testosterone, and semen analysis as well as blood smear and testicular histopathology as a differential tool between only balanoposthitis without filariasis male camels group (OnlyBpgr) and balanoposthitis-filariasis infected male camels group (BpFlgr). The study also monitored the associations between the s

Morphometric analyses of canine blood microfilariae isolated by the Knott's test enables Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens species-specific and Acanthocheilonema (syn. Dipetalonema) genus-specific diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Considering the increasing importance of small animals travel medicine and the spread of filariae with zoonotic potential to non-endemic European areas, routine filarial diagnosis in dogs is becoming important. Dirofilaria immitis, D. repens, Acanthocheilonema dracunculoides and A. reconditum are the most common canine filarial nematodes presenting blood circulating microfilariae (mf) which can be differentiated to species level by the acid phosphatase activity patterns or by PCR. Available data on the size of the mf vary considerably in the literature. The aim of this study was to

Multi-locus sequence analysis unveils a novel genus of filarial nematodes associated with ticks in French Guiana.

Filarial nematodes of the Dipetalonema lineage include tick-borne filarioids that infect both domestic and wild vertebrate hosts, but they remain understudied in many cases. In this study, we conducted a molecular characterization of a Dipetalonema-like filarioid (DLF) recently identified in two tick species in French Guiana, South America. While the cox1 mitochondrial gene was the sole marker initially sequenced for describing DLF, its classification and phylogenetic relationship with other members of the Dipetalonema lineage were unclear. Therefore, we better characterized DLF through the se

[Filarial multiparasitism in the savannah zone in Burkina Faso].

From june 1985 to may 1986, 1.209 consulting patients were examined for filariae in skin and blood. Among patients with microfilariae 17% had associations of filarial infections. The multiple infections rate seemed more important in man than woman and increased with age. The results showed that associations were not due to chance only. The frequencies of associations between Dipetalonema perstans and Onchocerca volvulus at one hand, Dipetalonema perstans and Wuchereria bancrofti on the other hand were highly significant. Symptoms of filarial associations were studied and subsequent therapeutic

Efficacy of the avermectins against filarial parasites: a short review.

The avermectins are macrocyclic lactones produced by Streptomyces avermitilis. One of them has been chemically modified and given the non-proprietary name ivermectin. The compounds have shown efficacy against various stages of filarial parasites. With respect to pre-adult stages in the mammalian host, activity has been observed against Dirofilaria immitis in ferrets and dogs, and Dipetalonema viteae and Litomosoides carinii in jirds (Meriones); but activity has not been observed against the developing stages of Brugia spp. in jirds or Onchocerca spp. in cattle. The compounds have not shown act

[Prevalence of human filariasis with microfilaremia in Gabon].

Direct examinations of blood and serologic tests were used to assess the intensity of the filarial endemicity in Gabon. Both methods revealed that the prevalence of filariasis with microfilaremia (Loa loa and Dipetalonema perstans) is presently very elevated. The areas that are more involved are the forest regions as well as the highest ones (ogoue, Lolo, Ngounie). Women appeared to be suffering from loasis to a lesser extent than men. On the other hand, the prevalence was identical for Dipetalonema perstans. For the gabonese population one can approximately say that 3 out of 5 adults patients

[Immunological diagnosis of filariosis in persons returning from tropical countries and in European and indigenous inhabitants of endemic areas (author's transl)].

Serum samples from persons who lived in areas where onchocerciasis occurred or who had filariasis were examined with the complement fixation test and the indirect hemagglutination test for the presence of antibodies against crude extracts from Dirofilaria immitis, Onchocerca volvulus, Dipetalonema viteae, and Ascaris suum. The results could be interpreted as follows: 1. The indirect hemagglutination test was more sensitive than the complement fixation test for the demonstration of antibodies in sera from European and indigenous inhabitants of endemic areas. 2. There were no differences between

[Additional findings on the distribution and prevalence of Tetrapetalonema (Esslingeria) streptocerca (Macfie and Corson, 1922) in West Africa (author's transl)].

Human streptocerciasis has been found in the Accra district (Ghana), in southern Ivory Coast, and in Upper Volta in migrants. During a survey in the forest part of the Volta Region (Eastern Ghana), 119 cases were discovered in ten villages between 6 degrees 50' N., and 7 degrees 50' N., indicating local transmission of the parasite. The parasitic load has always been low. In the area, the presence of T. streptocerca cannot modify the results of a direct diagnosis of onchocerciasis based on the emergence of microfilariae from skin snips in distilled water or normal saline solution. The parasite

First report of filarial nematodes in free-living pitheciid primates.

Although little studied, infections with nematodes of the Onchocercidae Leiper, 1911, predominated by the genera Dipetalonema Diesing, 1861 and Mansonella Faust, 1929, are frequent in wild primates and human populations in the Neotropical forest areas. This study reports natural infections with Dipetalonema freitasi Bain, Diagne & Muller, 1987 and D. gracile (Rudolphi, 1809) in two free-living species of pitheciid primates, extending the known geographical distribution of these species to the forest of the Peruvian Amazon. Adult worms were recovered from the thoracic and abdominal cavities of

Chemotherapy of filariasis in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

The effect of some known antifilarial drugs on naturally-occurring filariae in squirrel monkeys, Saimiri sciureus, was evaluated. Four drugs, dithiazanine iodide, naphuride sodium, thiacetarsamide sodium, and diethylcarbamazine were tested against Dipetalonema gracile and Tetrapetalonema marmosetae. Dipetalonema caudispina was included in some of the studies using diethylcarbamazine. These are the three most commonly encountered filarial species in squirrel monkeys. Dithiazanine iodide proved to be unsuitable for use because of lack of acceptance by the monkeys. Naphuride sodium (10 mg/kg/week

Courses of infections with Plasmodium falciparum in own monkeys displaying a microfilaremia.

Infections with the Uganda Palo Alto, Malayan Camp-CH/Q, Vietnam Oak Knoll, and Vietnam Smith strains of Plasmodium falciparum in owl monkeys (Aotus trivirgatus griseimembra) with concomitant microfilaremias usually, but not always, followed a more benign course than infections with the same strains in monkeys free of filarial infections. Four distinct microfilariae were identified in systematic examinations of 26 monkeys, 5 with self-limited infections with P. falciparum, 9 with normally benign self-limited infections with P. vivax, and 12 without previous malaria. The microfilariae found inc

Protective immunity linked with a distinct developmental stage of a filarial parasite.

Repeated low dose infections of the jird Meriones unguiculatus, with the filarial parasite Acanthocheilonema viteae cause a substantial reduction of the total worm burden, suggesting a parasite-driven immune mechanism that controls super-infections. Quantitative recovery of parasites from tissues of triple infected jirds reveals that the larvae derived from a subsequent challenge infection are inactivated or severely impaired several days after transmission, precisely during their molt from the L3 to the L4 stage. Moreover, only larvae undergoing the molt from L3 to L4 stages are capable of st
