Dirofilariasis is a zoonotic infection, which is occasionally seen in humans and rarely found as a subcutaneous orbital swelling. The authors report a case of a 62-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of a right periorbital subcutaneous nodule. Treatment with antibiotics and corticosteroids was not satisfactory. Magnetic resonance imaging analysis showed a nodule with a central colliquative area. The lesion displaced the eyeball superiorly but did not affect the intraorbital muscles. The patient was subjected to excisional biopsy and the nodule measured 15 mm. Histological findings

In this paper the first cases of human dirofilariasis in Poland are presented. The clinical manifestations were typical subcutaneous nodules with the adult worm (D. repens) in the center. Past medical history of the 5 patients revealed their trips to endemic countries, so the imported infection was considered. However 2 of these cases were difficult to interpret. It is unclear whether the infections should be considered endemic or imported, because of patients' short visits abroad which happened long time (10 years) ago.

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous dirofilariasis is zoonotic infection caused by Dirofilaria repens, the principal reservoir of which is the dog. Clinical expression is usually benign but problems of differential diagnosis are present in some cases. We report the first case of dirofilariasis diagnosed in our area (Sfax, southern Tunisia).
OBSERVATION: A 21 year-old woman consulted for multiple erythematous and pruriginous papules on the shoulders, limbs and buttocks. She was treated with antihistamines and dermatological topical steroids without improvement. The diagnosis was confirmed by histological

A case of human subcutaneous dirofilariasis is presented. A complete nematode removed from the tumour in the occipital region of a 61-year-old woman was identified, on the basis of its anatomical and histological characteristics, as a nongravid adult female of the species Dirofilaria repens. The patient had probably been infected on the Canary Islands, Spain, 7 months previously. In the future, the clinical and laboratory staff in Slovenia will have to be more alert to the possibility of dirofilariasis in patients with subcutaneous tumours, particularly in individuals who had travelled to ende

Mosquitoborne diseases are a growing threat to public health worldwide. Human dirofilariasis, caused by the nematode Dirofilaria repens and transmitted by mosquitoes from various genera, has recently expanded into new areas of Europe. In this article, we report molecularly confirmed autochthonous human D. repens infections in Estonia.

Canine filarioids are zoonotic vector-borne parasitic nematodes distributed mostly in the tropics and subtropics. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, distribution, etiology and genetic variation of canine filarioid infections by three different PCR techniques in four Southern Romanian counties. Blood samples of 300 shelter dogs were screened for infections with canine filarioids by real-time PCR. To determine filarioid species and coinfections, samples positive in the initial screening were further tested by conventional PCR and sequenced. Results indicated that 17% of the t

In this study, we screened field-caught mosquitoes for presence of Dirofilaria spp. by using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. Potential occurrence of Dirofilaria repens and Dirofilaria immitis microfilariae was examined in 3,600 mosquitoes of eight species (Aedes vexans, Aedes cinereus, Aedes rossicus, Culex pipiens, Culiseta annulata, Ochlerotatus sticticus, Ochlerotatus cantans and Ochlerotatus caspius) collected from five locations in two districts (Kosice and Trebisov) of Eastern Slovakia, endemic region of canine dirofilariasis. Collection of mosquitoes was performed between May a

In the past years, canine and human cases of infestation by Dirofilaria repens (Spirurida, Onchocercidae) have been increasingly reported in several European countries. Subcutaneous dirofilariosis by D. repens may either be asymptomatic in dogs or may be characterized by subcutaneous nodules and other symptoms. Information on the periodicity of D. repens microfilariae in naturally infested animals is scant, and this might impair the accurate diagnosis of subcutaneous dirofilariosis and appropriate control plans. In the present study, eight dogs infested with D. repens were sampled twice daily

Human dirofilariasis caused by Dirofilaria repens is a rare but increasingly reported zoonosis in the Middle East. However, eligible animal reservoirs seldom have been investigated in the area until now. Seven (1.8 percent) out of 381 dogs examined in Kuwait carried D. repens microfilariae showing compatible cutaneous clinical signs and positive response to the adulticide and microfilaricide therapies. This study indicates that dogs from Kuwait are natural hosts of D. repens and therefore act as an animal reservoir for the zoonotic condition.

A 51-year-old female developed urticarial lesions of her right forearm which progressed into transient edema and subcutaneous swelling. Later a small infiltrated subcutaneous nodule also appeared and was removed in toto. Histopathological examination revealed the presence of Dirofilaria repens. This worm is the cause of an endemic zoonosis in the Mediterranean area. In the past decade many cases have been reported worldwide, but the condition appears rare in Hungary and skin findings have not been described.

The host tissue response in humans, based on a study of biopsies of 14 subcutaneous nodules caused by Dirofilaria repens is described. The response was characterized by accumulation of eosinophilic material or eosinophilic pus adjacent to the parasite with surrounding granulomatous inflammation associated with extensive eosinophil infiltration of the surrounding tissue. Unlike with fungal lesions, fat necrosis was conspicuously absent. Nodules were all less than 3 cm in size. Fifteen percent of the smaller nodules (less than 1 cm) and 30% of the larger nodules required extensive examination of

Many species of canine filarial nematodes and their microfilariae have been described in various parts of the world. At the present time, it would appear that in Nigeria, the canine filarial species of importance is Dirofilaria repens. The parasite and its microfilariae appear to produce toxic and immunologic actions which are responsible for many pathological lesions.

Canine dirofilarioses are mosquito-borne zoonotic diseases with a continuous expansion of their geographical distribution, as a consequence of different climatic and ecological factors. Dirofilaria immitis, the aetiological agent of heartworm disease, has gained a major veterinary interest, mainly due to its severe clinical implication. In the last decades, D. repens, despite of being regarded as a less pathogenic species, regained attention due to its recognized zoonotic potential. Romania has been traditionally regarded as a non-endemic country, but recent epidemiological surveys are highlig

This survey was conducted to investigate the presence of Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens in native dogs and cats living in an area of Italy where animal and human dirofilarioses have been sporadically reported in the past few years. From May 2008 to March 2009 individual blood samples were collected from 300 native cats and 300 native dogs in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. All 600 samples were subjected to a Knott modified method, to a test for the detection of circulating D. immitis antigen and to two species-specific PCR-coupled sequencing protocols. Epidemiological data wer

BACKGROUND: The filarioid nematode Dirofilaria repens infects mainly dogs and is transmitted by vector mosquitoes when biting the definitive host. The parasite has mainly been reported from Eastern and Southern Europe, but during recent decades it has expanded its geographic range to some countries in Central and Northern Europe. Here, we report the finding of a fully mature female D. repens in a dog in Denmark.
CASE PRESENTATION: A female specimen of the filarioid nematode Dirofilaria repens (superfamily Filarioidea, family Onchocercidae) was isolated from a ruptured subcutaneous nodule in a

Dirofilaria repens is a zoonotic mosquito-borne filarioid that parasitizes in the subcutaneous tissues of carnivores, that has been incriminated in the great majority of human dirofilariasis cases reported throughout the Old World. From the Republic of Uzbekistan, recent data showed that this parasite is endemic in domestic and wild carnivores. In contrast, information regarding human infection is scarce and mostly outdated, with a single case report being published during the last decades. The present paper reports a case of recurrent autochthonous infection with D. repens in a patient living

Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens are endemic throughout Europe and southern eastern regions of Asia and reported with increasing frequency in Africa. Nevertheless, the increased awareness of veterinary practitioners, even in countries where the prevalence is low, has led to a decrease D. immitis prevalence in dogs, especially in previously endemic/hyper-endemic areas. Prevalence has significantly increased, however, in areas where heartworm has apparently spread more recently, such as Central and North Eastern Europe. Furthermore, autochthonous cases have been observed in Siberia. Low seropre

Human infections caused by Dirofilaria repens, a cosmopolitan zoonotic parasitosis endemic in Southern and Eastern Europe and Asia still is an underdiagnosed infection due to parasite identification difficulties. Here, we report the first human case of subcutaneous dirofilariasis by D. repens diagnosed in Portugal. This was probably an imported case from India, as judged by epidemiological and clinical data. With this presentation we aim to alert clinicians for the emergence of vector-borne zoonoses associated with global warming and international travel. This case showed that differential dia
