Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is one of the most common causes of intellectual disability/developmental delay (ID/DD), especially in males. It is caused most often by CGG trinucleotide repeat expansions, and less frequently by point mutations and partial or full deletions of the FMR1 gene. The wide clinical spectrum of affected females partly depends on their X-inactivation status. Only few female ID/DD patients with microdeletions including FMR1 have been reported. We describe 3 female patients with 3.5-, 4.2- and 9.2-Mb de novo microdeletions in Xq27.3-q28 containing FMR1. X-inactivation was rand

This longitudinal study investigated subtypes of dyslexia based on the distinction between word reading accuracy and word reading rate. Building on prior cross-sectional research, we inquired whether the cognitive profiles of these subtypes can be identified before children learn to read. A large sample of Hebrew-speaking children were assessed on phonological awareness (PA), morphological awareness (MA), and rapid automatized naming (RAN) in preschool and then followed into first grade to evaluate their reading accuracy and rate. In preschool, findings revealed two distinct subgroups: one wit

BACKGROUND: The assessment of activities of daily living (ADL) is important both for the diagnosis and staging of dementia. The objective of this study was to verify the applicability and validity of the Brazilian version of the Disability Assessment for Dementia (DAD-Br).
METHODS: The DAD was applied to caregivers of 89 patients with probable Alzheimer disease (AD) and to 40 elderly individuals without cognitive impairment (controls). We assessed the construct validity of the scale and its diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value). In addition, intergroup and intra

AIM: To determine the applicability and psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Disability Assessment of Dementia scale (DAD-I) in a community-residing population with early-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD).
METHODS: The DAD-I was administered to the primary caregivers of 159 patients (mean age +/- SD 77.1 +/- 5.2) with mild AD (mean Mini Mental State Examination, MMSE, +/- SD 23.1 +/- 2.2).
RESULTS: The DAD-I showed excellent internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.92) and good construct validity. The DAD-I score was not significantly associated with gender, educa

Having both a disability and being bullied increases the risk of later mental health issues. Children with disabilities are at greater risk of being bullied and therefore at greater risk of adverse mental health outcomes. We conducted a limited systematic review of longitudinal studies focusing on the role of disability in relation to bullying and mental health problems. Twelve studies with an initial measure of mental health or disorder, measured no later than 10 years of age, were found. Ten of these twelve studies suggested that having a disability before victimisation increased the impact

BACKGROUND: The lack of standardized disability progression evaluation in multiple sclerosis (MS) hinders reproducibility of clinical study results, due to heterogeneous and poorly reported criteria.
OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the impact of using different parameters when evaluating MS progression, and to introduce an automated tool for reproducible outcome computation.
METHODS: Re-analyzing BRAVO clinical trial data (NCT00605215), we examined the fluctuations in computed treatment effect on confirmed disability progression (CDP) and progression independent of relapse activity (PIRA) when var

BACKGROUND: In Bangladesh, Leprosy remains a key challenge in the public health sector, especially in the rural areas where detection of the disease in the early stages and access to healthcare are still limited. Even though there have been national efforts to eliminate the disease, the burden of the disease remains high. There are people who face consequences as a result of the disease. The aim of this study is to understand the extent of the burden of leprosy among patients and also identify the clinical and socio-demographic factors that are associated so that intervention strategies can be

Background: Children with intellectual disability (ID) are more susceptible to adverse effects from standard psychiatric medications, often necessitating the use of off-label treatments. In the limited studies to date, Clonidine has displayed evidence of benefit in treating attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sleep onset difficulties, behaviors that challenge, and tics. Methods: This naturalistic study involved a cross-sectional survey completed by 4 consultant psychiatrists, detailing 50 children with ID treated with Clonidine over a 3-year period. PURPOSE: The benefits of volunteering among youth are well documented. However, research is limited on volunteering among youth with disabilities. This study examined prevalence and associations of volunteering among youth with disabilities.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2016-2018 National Survey of Children's Health (n= 42 204). Prevalence estimates were calculated for sociodemographic and household factors, volunteering, and functional limitations. Bivariate and multivariable associations between participation in volunteering activities and variables of interest were assessed.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia has been described as the most disabling mental disorder, and patients with schizophrenia have been said to be disabled mostly in self-care, occupation, sexual relation and social relationship domains. Previous authors have studied disability among this study population. However, the limitations of these previous works include non-report of the prevalence rates of disability, report on disability limited to only a particular domain of life and the utilization of disability instruments fraught with significant weaknesses.
AIM: To determine the prevalence, severity, do

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) are progressive, debilitating diseases that can lead to severe impairment. The aim of the study was to evaluate the level of disability and compare it between different subtypes of IIM as well as to estimate clinical symptoms associated with greater risk of disability and distinguish the most troublesome activities in this group of patients. A online form concerning clinical symptoms, comorbidities and limitations in daily living was created and distributed to online support groups for patients with IIM. Health Assessment Questionnaire was used to estim

BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study assesses health losses from diseases, injuries, and risk factors using disability-adjusted life-years, which need a set of disability weights to quantify health levels associated with non-fatal outcomes. The objective of this study was to estimate disability weights for the GBD 2013 study.
METHODS: We analysed data from new web-based surveys of participants aged 18-65 years, completed in four European countries (Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, and Sweden) between Sept 23, 2013, and Nov 11, 2013, combined with data previously collected in t

This study aimed to define the term 'profound and multiple learning disabilities' (PMLD). A shared understanding of terminology or diagnostic terms describing groups of individuals is important for the purposes of strategic development, service planning, and the provision and equity of service delivery. A literature review provided different definitions and meanings associated with the term. The meaning attributed to the definitions was explored in focus groups and individual interviews (face to face and telephone) with service managers, commissioners, practitioners, frontline healthcare staff

BACKGROUND: Reasons for the higher frequency of schizophrenia in learning-disabled populations are uncertain. We investigated the neuroanatomical basis for this phenomenon by structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with learning disability and schizophrenia, learning-disabled patients, and patients with schizophrenia.
METHODS: Age-matched and sex-matched patients with learning disability (20 cases), schizophrenia (25), and both disorders (23) underwent MRI scans of the brain. Whole brain areas and specific regions of interest were examined. 29 normal controls were also scanned

To obtain basic information on elderly abuse and neglect in order to provide for its early discovery and prevention, a questionnaire survey about the present situation regarding abuse and neglect of the disabled elderly living at home was performed on health/medical service/welfare professions. Forty-two cases were analyzed. The major results were as follows; 1. Victims were 13 men and 29 women, approximately 1/3 of whom were in their 70's and another 1/3 in their 80's. Approximately 1/4 of the abusers were either sons or daughters of the victims. 2. Verbal abuse was the most frequent type of

This study presents descriptive data on 86 medical students and physicians, referred for testing to determine the presence and type of learning problems. The major results indicate that most subjects had either a learning disability or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Twenty-one subjects had a reading learning disability (LD); 21 subjects had a potential visual/spatial learning problem; 10 subjects had ADHD; 15 subjects had both a reading disability and ADHD; and 19 subjects had no detectable problem. Subtest analysis or WAIS-R scores indicated that sequential information proce

Educational Kinesiology is a treatment using specific movements to access different parts of the brain in maximizing learning potential. It has been recommended for use with learning disabled children; however, studies validating its effects are limited. The school records of 25 students each with a diagnosis of specific learning disability were examined for pre- and posttest scores on academic and perceptual motor skill measures following an Educational Kinesiology program. Analysis indicated significant improvement in perceptual motor skills following the Educational Kinesiology program. The

The Health Services Research Unit at the University of Kent at Canterbury was set up in 1971, with financial support from the Central Government's Department of Health and Social Security. One area of major concern has been the study of the number and needs of disabled people living at home and of services provided to meet those needs. In a City-wide survey of the whole population, it was found that about 5 per cent of the people living at home had significant impairments, about half of whom had or required some support. Registers of disabled people and records of services helping them were fo
