What we can learn about recovery: lessons from the Fukushima survivors.

Recovery from disaster can take a lifetime, and people looking in from outside might not appreciate the stages of recovery. Little talked about is the stigma, which might attach to the survivors of a disaster, especially if it is a man-made disaster. This paper documents the account of a Japanese nursing student who visited the area 18 months after the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami, talked to the people there, and shared her reflections. The experiences of the Fukushima survivors are linked to those of victims of other disasters, whose recovery was impeded by being discriminated agai

Home care during the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo.

During the course of field observations for an ethnographic study of home care nurses' job stress, Hurricane Hugo struck the community, causing extensive damage. The nurses' office building was heavily damaged by wind and water, and their office was not habitable for almost a week. The author had observed the nurses' work practices over 10 weeks before the hurricane. In the aftermath of the storm, the nurses were simultaneously disaster victims and caregivers for other victims. They experienced grief, anger, and frustration about their losses, as well as conflict between their family- and work

[Human Caring at Different Stages After Disasters].

Disasters, including natural disasters and man-made ones, occur rather frequently in recent years. Disasters bring destruction to the resources and expectations of local residents and cause varying degrees of physical and mental damage to the victims, some of whom suffered persistent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Human caring is the essence and core of nursing. Giving consideration to the needs and wishes of patients, the nursing staff respect the personal values of patients, give patients sincere attention and care, satisfy the reasonable needs of patients, protect the dignity of pat

Climate-fuelled disasters and perinatal health: the catch 22 when undertaking research within an under-resourced health sector.

BACKGROUND: Climate-fuelled disasters are increasing in frequency and duration, with impacts known to disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, such as perinatal women and young families. Local healthcare workforce engagement into planning responses is required to ensure improved healthcare for these populations. One important component of perinatal care in Australia occurs through the maternal and child health nurses (MCHN). Attempted research engagement with the maternal child health nurse sector regarding the impact of disasters on the care of perinatal women during times of disaste

Triage ethics in mass casualty incident simulation: A phenomenological exploration.

BackgroundDisaster scenarios challenge both novice and experienced nurses to navigate complex ethical dilemmas in resource-limited environments. Traditional nursing education often leaves new nurses unprepared for the ethical demands of disaster nursing. Utilitarianism must often guide triage ethics and decision-making. There is a critical need to equip nursing students with these ethical competencies.Research question/AimThis study explores nursing students' lived experiences using introductory triage ethics in mass casualty incident simulation (MCIS).Research designA qualitative, interpretiv

Developing disaster management modules: a collaborative approach.

Disasters, whether natural or human induced, can strike when least expected. The events of 9/11 in the US, the 7/7 bombings in the UK, and the anthrax incident in the US on 10th October 2001 indicate that there is a need to have a nursing workforce who is able to respond effectively to mass casualty events and incidents involving chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear substances. Multi-agency collaboration is one of the fundamental principles of disaster preparedness and response. It was therefore necessary to take a similar multi-agency collaborative approach to develop modules on the

A cognitive developmental approach to understanding how children cope with disasters.

TOPIC: This paper applies cognitive developmental theory to explain how preschoolers, school-age children, and adolescents process and respond to disasters. PURPOSE: To help clinicians understand the disaster experience from a child's point of view, recognize age-specific reactions, identify symptoms that may signal coping difficulties, and plan effective interventions. SOURCES: Case examples from the author's work with flood victims illustrate typical reactions for children (preschool to adolescents) within a family context, along with developmentally appropriate interventions. CONCLUSIONS

INTRODUCTION: In the globalizing world, significant advances have been made in health services with the development of technology. These advances have led to an increase in the demand for qualified manpower, such as nurses, to ensure the sustainability of health systems. Disasters, especially disasters such as earthquakes, can cause the migration of qualified manpower out of the city. After earthquakes, the destruction of city infrastructure and the emergence of housing needs increase migration rates. This study aims to analyze the migration of nursing manpower after the February 6, 2023, eart
