Development of the Australian Society of Forensic Odontology disaster victim identification forensic odontology guide.

The need for documented procedures and protocols are important in every specialist group to ensure a consistent service to the community. They provide guidance to members of the specialist group about responsibilities and appropriate practices, and confidence to the community that the services are of the highest possible standard. In a Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) incident, by enabling the process to be audited, they also serve to ensure that identifications are reliable. Implantation of radio frequency identification device (RFID) microchip in disaster victim identification (DVI).

The tsunami catastrophe of December 2004 left more than 200,000 dead. Disaster victim identification (DVI) teams were presented with the unprecedented challenge of identifying thousands of mostly markedly putrefied and partially skeletised bodies. To this end, an adequate body tagging method is essential. Conventional body bag tagging in terms of writing on body bags and placing of tags inside body bags proved unsatisfactory and problem prone due to consequences of cold storage, formalin (formaldehyde) embalming and body numbers inside storage facilities. The placement of radio frequency ident

The impact of PTSD symptoms on post-disaster consumption: tertiary victims of the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in Türkiye.

INTRODUCTION: The February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes reshaped everyday life well beyond the impact zone; however, how disaster-linked psychological states influence psychosocial wellbeing and everyday behaviors, including consumer responses among tertiary victims (geographically distant yet psychologically affected), remains underexplored. METHODS: We employ an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design (QUAN → QUAL): a cross-sectional survey of Istanbul adults (N = 350) is modeled using PLS-SEM, followed by 24 semi-structured interviews and reflexive thematic analysis, integrated via j

Role of forensic odontology in the identification of victims of major mass disasters across the world: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Forensic odontology (FO) is regarded in the literature as one of the most reliable and economical scientific methods for victim identification in mass disasters (MDs). The present paper systematically reviews the role of forensic odontologists in various global MDs. METHOD: A comprehensive search of the literature databases (PubMed, Medline, SCOPUS, Web of Science and Google Scholar), along with cross-referencing published peer-reviewed articles, was conducted. The search included full texts, abstracts or titles, had no inclusion year limit (searched until September 2017) and was

After the Indian Ocean tsunami: Singapore's contribution to the international disaster victim identification effort in Thailand.

This paper describes the international disaster victim identification (DVI) response mounted in Thailand, with particular reference to Singapore's contribution to this process, in the wake of the Asian tsunami of 26 December, 2004, which devastated parts of more than 10 countries in and around the Indian Ocean and claimed more than 200,000 lives. Although Singapore was unscathed by this natural calamity, over 30 Singaporean visitors were counted amongst the thousands of deceased victims, mostly in Thailand. The systematic application of forensic pathology, forensic dentistry, DNA profiling, an

The Role of Identification with Disaster Victims in Psychological Responses among Non-Exposed Rescue Workers Following an Airplane Crash.

OBJECTIVES: Identification, a cognitive process by which individuals think of themselves as similar to another person, may be associated with distress during traumatic events. This study examined the association of identification with psychological responses among disaster workers not directly exposed to an airline crash. METHODS: Participants were 421 workers (aged 18-60 [M (SD) = 36.2 (9.9)], 86.4% male, 98.3% White, 71.8% married). Surveys at 2 months (Time 1; T1) and 7 (T2) months post-disaster assessed identification (i.e., extent to which participants identified victims as similar to th

Bifidobacterium infantis M-63 improves mental health in victims with irritable bowel syndrome developed after a major flood disaster.

Individuals in a community who developed irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) after major floods have significant mental health impairment. We aimed to determine if Bifidobacterium infantis M-63 was effective in improving symptoms, psychology and quality of life measures in flood-affected individuals with IBS and if the improvement was mediated by gut microbiota changes. Design was non-randomised, open-label, controlled before-and-after. Of 53 participants, 20 with IBS were given B. infantis M-63 (1×109 cfu/sachet/day) for three months and 33 were controls. IBS symptom severity scale, hospital anxie

Cervicothoracic junction in disaster victim identification: Idiosyncrasies and relevance of body position for advanced chest radiograph comparisons.

Standard plain film medical radiographs often form a valuable line of evidence to identify individuals in large-scale fatality events. While commonly available, chest radiographs present a challenge that their analysis is somewhat more involved and complex than radiographic records of other body regions. For example, chest radiographs concern subtler morphological varieties of smaller anatomical features across a larger number of skeletal elements in contrast to frontal sinus comparisons that concern a large, (often) single, highly variable void within one bone. This does not detract from or d

Coping with traumatic loss: an interview with the parents of TWA 800 crash victims and implications for disaster mental health professionals.

The stories of survivors of traumatic events can be instructive to professionals who provide crisis intervention and/or psychotherapy to the bereaved. This paper provides excerpts from an interview with a middle-age married couple who lost two children in the 1996 explosion of TWA 800 over Long Island Sound. Their story illustrates important methods of coping with grief and sheds light on the value to survivors of recovering victims' remains. This case study is followed by a discussion about some elements of the interview that are helpful to an understanding of the grief process.

Archived medical specimens as antemortem DNA references for disaster victim identification, optimization study following the October 7 massacre.

The October 7, 2023 terrorist attack in Israel resulted in over 1,200 casualties, creating unprecedented disaster victim identification (DVI) challenges. Traditional ante-mortem (AM) reference methods using personal items proved insufficient as entire families were affected. We implemented a novel strategy utilizing archived medical specimens from Ministry of Health repositories to construct a self-direct-reference antemortem (AM) DNA database. This study systematically evaluates factors affecting STR profiling success from 151 archived clinical specimens (2003-2023): histological samples (FFP

Health concerns associated with disaster victim identification after a tsunami--Thailand, December 26, 2004-March 31, 2005.

The number of persons confirmed dead from the Indian Ocean tsunami that struck on December 26, 2004, had exceeded 174,000 as of March 31, 2005; the majority of decedents were buried or cremated without being identified. In contrast, in Thailand, disaster victim identification (DVI) continues, with approximately 1,800 persons identified among the 5,395 persons confirmed dead; of the dead, approximately 50% were not citizens of Thailand. This large-scale, multinational effort faced immediate challenges, including establishment of four temporary morgues, implementation of safeguards against envir

Classifications of Trauma Exposure and Their Associations With 3-Year Follow-up Psychological Symptoms Among Korean Victims of Disaster: A Latent Class Analysis.

This study aimed to classify patterns of trauma exposure among disaster victims using latent class analysis (LCA) and to examine group differences in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depressive symptoms over three years. Data were obtained from a 3-year panel survey of Korean disaster victims (male = 461, female = 513) who responded to four types of trauma experiences: threatened death, injury or disease, witnessing injury or death, and loss of family or relatives in 2017. The LCA yielded three classes: the low-threat (66.1%), life-threat (29.4%), and multi-threat (4.5%) gro

Periodontal Disease Is Associated with Insomnia among Victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake: A Panel Study Initiated Three Months after the Disaster.

In March 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE), which was followed by a devastating tsunami, destroyed the societal and the public hygiene systems in Japanese coastal areas. Insomnia, the greatest issue among disaster victims, has detrimental effects on both physical and psychological health. Periodontitis causes chronic discomfort and inflammation, and little is known about its impact on insomnia. Three months after the earthquake, a health panel survey was conducted over four surveys, till September 2013, in which information regarding 8,015 adults was collected and used. In addition
