Depressed patients and non-psychiatric controls: discriminant analysis on social environment variables.

A set of variables from the social environment (e.g. social contacts, confiding relationships, leisure activities, loneliness) was used to differentiate between a consecutive series of 111 patients diagnosed as having a depressive illness and a sample of 98 non-psychiatric controls. The function derived from the discriminant analysis correctly classified 83% of the subjects. The results indicate shortcomings in the social environment of depressives and point to the discriminating power of such variables.

Discriminant function analysis as an aid to the diagnosis of flax byssinosis.

A simple discriminant function in four variates (area of mill, average number of cigarettes currently smoked per day, a complex of dyspnoea, cough, and wheezing grades, and occupation) was derived to discriminate between non-byssinotic (grade o) and byssinotic (grades I and II) preparers. This function diagnosed 14% of non-byssinotics as byssinotic and 35% of byssinotics as non-byssinotic, giving a total misclassification rate (24·5%) that agreed closely with the theoretically expected rate (26·4%). Similar misclassification rates were found in a randomly selected check sample of preparers. Th

Discriminant score for celiac disease based on immunohistochemical analysis of duodenal biopsies.

OBJECTIVES: Celiac disease (CD) represents a spectrum, which includes cases with minor histological abnormalities (potential CD). The aim of this work is to evaluate the contribution of immunohistochemical analysis of duodenal biopsies to the diagnosis of gluten-related minor enteropathy. METHODS: Duodenal biopsies from 56 patients with untreated CD and 56 controls were analyzed for CD3 and γδ intraepithelial lymphocyte number, γδ/CD3 ratio, and density of CD25+ lamina propria cells. A discriminant equation was obtained by which 61 more biopsies with normal villous architecture were blindly e

Discriminant analysis prediction of the need for ventriculoperitoneal shunt after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Shunt operations have conventionally been performed to deal with normal-pressure hydrocephalus after subarachnoid hemorrhage. The indication and timing of shunt operations are often based on clinical symptoms and head computed tomography findings, and the early identification of the need for such surgery would be advantageous. The present study examined whether this need could be predicted solely on the basis of data collected on patient admission. A total of 120 consecutive patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage who underwent radical surgery for aneurysm were analyzed for potential risk factor

Predictors of hyoid fracture in hanging: Discriminant function analysis of morphometric variables.

Hyoid is a U-shaped bone present in the ventral aspect of neck at the level of fourth cervical vertebra. It is a small bone placed between the root of tongue and the thyroid cartilage. Fracture of hyoid has great significance and importance in forensic pathology. It is well documented that fracture of hyoid is a recognized finding and indicator of strangulation (more common in manual or throttling than by ligature). Fracture of hyoid is less frequently reported in hanging. Discriminant function analysis was used with all predictors (width of hyoid, antero-posterior length of hyoid and length o

[Clinical and biological markers of secondary uveitis: results of a discriminant analysis].

BACKGROUND: The association of uveitis and systemic disease is well known. Patients suffering from uveitis often undergo a extensive battery of tests in order to detect underlying disease, but the efficiency of such screening is uncertain. The aim of this study was to investigate useful clinical data for recognizing secondary uveitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective analysis of 115 patients with uveitis of unknown etiology. All of them were included in an extensive protocol study. Four groups were considered: specific ocular disease (SOD), idiopathic uveitis, HLA-B27 associat

Analytical methods to differentiate similar electroencephalographic spectra: neural network and discriminant analysis.

Differences in electroencephalographic (EEG) power spectra obtained under similar, but not identical, conditions may be difficult to discern using standard techniques. Statistical analysis may not be useful because of the large number of comparisons necessary. Visual recognition of differences also may be difficult. A new technique, neural network analysis, has been used successfully in other problems of pattern recognition and classification. We examined a number of methods of classifying similar EEG data: standard statistical analysis (analysis of variance), visual recognition, discriminant

Incisor root resorption associated with palatally displaced maxillary canines: Analysis and prediction using discriminant function analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Incisor root resorption associated with palatally displaced canine (PDC-IRR) is an important phenomenon that might alter the orthodontic treatment plan. The aims of this study were to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of PDC-IRRs, to compare PDC-IRR and PDC-No-IRR groups, to identify predictors for PDC-IRR, and to produce a valid PDC-IRR prediction model using discriminant function analysis. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography images for 107 palatally displaced canines (PDCs) and 51 fully erupted nondisplaced canines (NDC) were analyzed for the presence of inciso

Fractal analysis of trabecular bone texture on radiographs: discriminant value in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Trabecular bone microarchitecture cannot be routinely evaluated. We have developed and validated a fractal analysis of trabecular bone texture on calcaneus radiographs. The aim of this work was to evaluate the ability of the fractal analysis to discriminate a group of 39 postmenopausal women with osteoporotic (OP) vertebral crush fractures (68.0 +/- 10.8 years) from an age-matched control group of 39 women (68.0 +/- 10.7 years). The value of the fractal analysis was compared with the value of the femoral neck bone mineral density (FNBMD) and trochanteric bone mineral density (TRBMD). The resul

Outcome prediction in adult respiratory distress syndrome using discriminant analysis of cardiorespiratory data.

In order to examine the prognostic value of different cardiopulmonary variables in adult respiratory distress syndrome the data of 30 patients with this illness were studied retrospectively. The patients were divided into 3 groups: Group A: survivors (9 cases, 40 examinations), Group B: early stage nonsurvivors (8 cases, 37 examinations), Group C: late stage nonsurvivors (19 cases, 89 examinations). In 6 nonsurvivor patients a few measurements were done in the early and late stage, too. There were highly significant differences between Groups A and C (mean pulmonary arterial pressure, pulmonar

Relative reliability of three different discriminant analysis methods for detecting PKU gene carriers.

A previously derived discriminant function for detecting classical PKU gene carriers without a priori pedigree probability was reevaluated using a large sample size. The test involves fluorometric measurement of fasting phenylalanine and tyrosine plasma levels. Among 75 controls and 45 known carriers, 95% could be classified as to their carrier status with greater than 98% accuracy. The accuracy of our method in classifying our population compared favorably to that of two other discriminant analysis methods requiring a priori probability.

Discriminant analysis to predict graduation--nongraduation in a master's degree program in nursing.

Discriminant analysis was used to predict graduation and two categories of nongraduation from readily available admissions data at the University of Kansas nursing master's degree program. The traditional admissions indices, baccalaureate grade point average (GPA) and Graduate Record Examination (GRE)-verbal and -quantitative scores, were used as predictors. Criterion categories were composed of 102 graduates, 103 individuals who dropped out of the program, and 65 individuals who were not accepted. The first discriminant function was, chi 2 (6) = 87.567, p less than .0001, and extracted 98% of

Enhancing feature selection for ordinal outcomes using resampling-based sparse linear discriminant analysis.

MOTIVATION: High-dimensional biomedical datasets with ordinal outcomes-such as cancer stages or treatment responses-pose significant challenges for feature selection due to strong predictor correlations and limited sample sizes. Sparse Linear Discriminant Analysis (sLDA) is widely used for simultaneous classification and feature selection. However, concerns about model stability and reproducible feature selection persist, particularly in the presence of pronounced collinearity inherent in biomedical data. Consequently, direct application of sLDA often fails to capture a reproducible set of bio

Reliability, and Convergent and Discriminant Validity of Gaming Disorder Scales: A Meta-Analysis.

Background: An association between gaming disorder (GD) and the symptoms of common mental disorders is unraveled yet. In this preregistered study, we quantitatively synthesized reliability, convergent and discriminant validity of GD scales to examine association between GD and other constructs. Methods: Five representative GD instruments (GAS-7, AICA, IGDT-10, Lemmens IGD-9, and IGDS9-SF) were chosen based on recommendations by the previous systematic review study to conduct correlation meta-analyses and reliability generalization. A systematic literature search was conducted through Pubmed, P

[Comparison of Discriminant Analysis and Decision Trees for the Detection of Subclinical Keratoconus].

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic keratectasia is one of the most dreaded complications of refractive surgery. In most cases, keratectasia develops after refractive surgery of eyes suffering from subclinical stages of keratoconus with few or no signs. Unfortunately, there has been no reliable procedure for the early detection of keratoconus. In this study, we used binary decision trees (recursive partitioning) to assess their suitability for discrimination between normal eyes and eyes with subclinical keratoconus. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The method of decision tree analysis was compared with discriminant

[Discriminant analysis to predict the clinical diagnosis of primary immunodeficiencies: a preliminary report].

BACKGROUND: The features in a clinical history from a patient with suspected primary immunodeficiency (PID) direct the differential diagnosis through pattern recognition. PIDs are a heterogeneous group of more than 250 congenital diseases with increased susceptibility to infection, inflammation, autoimmunity, allergy and malignancy. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is a multivariate supervised classification method to sort objects of study into groups by finding linear combinations of a number of variables. OBJECTIVE: To identify the features that best explain membership of pediatric PID pa

Dental and minor physical anomalies in children with developmental disorders--a discriminant analysis.

A discriminant analysis was performed in a sample of 303 children with developmental disorders (DD) and 303 healthy controls (C) in order to test whether some oro-dental and physical minor anomalies could discriminate these groups of children. DD sample comprised 176 mentally retarded (MR) children. 70 children with impaired hearing (IH) and 57 children with impaired vision (IV). The control group included 303 healthy subjects, matched for sex and age. The analysis comprised seven common oral and dental anomalies: median diastema, hypodontia, impacted teeth, microdontia, dens invaginatus, uppe

Striatal antibodies in children with Tourette's syndrome: multivariate discriminant analysis of IgG repertoires.

Antineuronal antibodies have been postulated to be the underlying pathophysiology in TS and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Serum antibodies from 20 children with TS, and 21 control subjects against human striatum, globus pallidus, muscle, and HTB-10 cells were assayed by Western blot techniques. A MANOVA differentiated between TS and control blots, and a discriminant analysis demonstrated which variables contributed most to differences between groups. Prominent differences between TS and control blots were identified using striatal epitopes in contrast to similar patterns shown between grou
