Development and initial validation of the Child Disgust Scale.

Although disgust sensitivity (DS) has been implicated in the development of anxiety disorders in children, the absence of a measure of DS specifically for children has not allowed for an adequate test of this claim. To fill this important gap in the literature, this investigation presents a series of studies on the development and examination of the psychometric properties (including reliability, validity, and factor structure) of scores on a newly developed Child Disgust Scale (CDS). Exploratory factor analysis in Study 1 (N = 1,500) found that a bifactor model, which allows for a "g" DS fact

Disgust, fear, and the anxiety disorders: a critical review.

Anxiety disorders have traditionally been conceptualized as reflecting the emotions of fear and anxiety. A developing program of research demonstrates a relation between disgust and three specific anxiety disorders: blood-injection-injury (BII) phobia, spider phobia, and contamination-related obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This review serves three purposes. First, the authors review the response patterns predicted to be observed if the emotional response in these disorders involved disgust versus fear. The review suggests specific response patterns that characterize disgust and fear in t

Case study: disgust and a specific phobia of buttons.

The role of disgust in childhood phobias has received limited attention in the psychiatric literature. Available studies suggest that attention to the emotion of disgust is optimal for reduction of phobic symptoms given that the interaction between fear and disgust has been found to maintain and even exacerbate phobias. Disgust was targeted via imagery exposures as part of an exposure-based cognitive-behavioral intervention for a 9-year-old Hispanic American boy who presented with a specific phobia of buttons. Posttreatment, 6-month, and 12-month follow-up assessment results demonstrated maint

Disgust sensitivity and emotion regulation potentiate the effect of disgust propensity on spider fear, blood-injection-injury fear, and contamination fear.

Research consistently reveals a relation between disgust and specific anxiety concerns, but research has only begun to investigate possible mechanisms by which this relation occurs. The current study tested whether disgust sensitivity (DS; a specific difficulty regulating disgust) and general emotion dysregulation (GED; non-emotion-specific regulation difficulties) moderated the relation between disgust propensity (DP) and spider fear, blood-injection-injury (BII) fear, and contamination fear. A total of 594 undergraduate students completed verbal-report measures of DP, DS, GED, negative affec

Disgusted by Sexual Abuse: Exploring the Association Between Disgust Sensitivity and Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms Among Mothers of Sexually Abused Children.

Nonoffending mothers of sexually abused children often exhibit high levels of posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms. Emerging evidence suggests that trait-like individual differences in sensitivity to disgust play a role in the development of PTS symptoms. One such individual difference, disgust sensitivity, has not been examined as far as we are aware among victims of secondary traumatic stress. The current study examined associations between disgust sensitivity and PTS symptoms among mothers of sexually abused children (N = 72). Mothers completed the Impact of Event Scale-Revised and the Three

Disgust sensitivity and psychopathological symptoms in non-clinical children.

There is clear evidence in the adult literature that disgust sensitivity is implicated in various psychopathological syndromes. The current study examined the link between disgust sensitivity and psychopathological symptoms in youths. In a sample of non-clinical children aged 9-13 years, disgust sensitivity was assessed by two self-report questionnaires (i.e., the Disgust Scale and the Disgust Sensitivity Questionnaire) and a behavioural test. Furthermore, children completed scales for measuring the personality trait of neuroticism and various types of psychopathological symptoms. Results show

Does disgust increase parasympathetic activation in individuals with a history of fainting? A psychophysiological analysis of disgust stimuli with and without blood-injection-injury association.

People with blood-injection-injury fear can faint when being confronted with blood, injections or injuries. Page (1994) holds that people with blood-injury phobia faint, because they are disgust sensitive and disgust facilitates fainting by eliciting parasympathetic activity. We tested the following two hypotheses: (1) Disgusting pictures elicit more disgust in blood-injection-injury-anxious people with a history of fainting than they do in controls. (2) Disgust causes parasympathetic activation. Subjects were 24 participants with high blood-injection-injury fear and a history of fainting in a

Gay Men's Perceptions of Disgust Towards Their Social Group.

Over the past two decades, research has consistently reported a relationship between the emotion of disgust and homonegativity toward gay men. Yet these investigations have focused exclusively on heterosexual individuals' perceptions of the emotion, leaving gay men's own perspectives on disgust directed toward their social group unconsidered. The present online qualitative study addressed this gap by examining how exclusively gay men residing in Canada (N = 22) understand disgust in relation to their own social group. Using thematic analysis, four themes emerged: 1) Sex and Intimacy, 2) Disrup

Does Exposure to Thin Ideal Bodies Increase Self-Disgust?

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates whether exposure to thin-ideal body images, commonly encountered on social networking sites (SNSs), leads to increased body dissatisfaction, body-related anxiety, and self-disgust among young women. While previous research has established a link between SNS use and body dissatisfaction, the role of self-disgust in this context remains underexplored. METHODS: A total of 59 healthy young women (M age = 24.49, SD = 3.66) with a normal BMI (M = 22.38, SD = 3.27) participated. Exclusion criteria included current or past eating disorders, psychopathology, or psyc

Gender-Specific Relation Between Olfactory Sensitivity and Disgust Perception.

The perception of disgust is a powerful but yet puzzling emotion, aiming at the prevention of potential microbial pathogens and being directly linked to olfactory processing in its neurophysiological pathways via the anterior insular cortex. In sample of healthy participants with a natural variation in olfactory function, we investigated the relation between olfactory sensitivity and disgust perception. A total of 123 healthy individuals were surveyed with a disgust sensitivity questionnaire. Olfactory threshold was assessed in all participants using the Sniffin' Sticks. Additionally, tactile

Disgust-Related Personality Traits in Men with Olfactory Dysfunction.

Individuals differ in disgust-related personality traits, such as disgust proneness (DP: tendency to experience disgust), disgust sensitivity (DS: tendency to perceive one's own disgust experiences as difficult to control), and self-disgust (SD: strong dislike/aversion of yourself). Olfaction is one crucial input for the disgust system. The present study investigated disgust dispositions in individuals with persistent olfactory dysfunction. We studied 16 male patients with anosmia, 20 patients with hyposmia, and 20 normosmic men, and compared DP, DS, and SD scores between the groups. Dysosmic

Altered state and trait disgust in borderline personality disorder.

Clinical experience suggests that the emotion disgust plays an important role in borderline personality disorder (BPD). We investigated 30 female patients with BPD and 30 healthy women who answered different measures of trait disgust, specifically disgust proneness, disgust sensitivity, and self-disgust. Moreover, all participants rated affective facial expressions as well as affective scenes according to perceived or elicited basic emotions. The patients with BPD reported elevated trait disgust, especially for the area of self-disgust. They also rated facial expressions of disgust as more int

Preliminary examination of disgust learning as a potential OCD endophenotype.

Endophenotypes (intermediate phenotypes) are traits hypothesized to represent genetic risk for disorders such as OCD. However, it is unclear if disgust conditioning abnormalities may function as an OCD endophenotype. The present study sought to examine the extent which disgust conditioning abnormalities characterize OCD in a manner that is consistent with an endophenotype. Participants with OCD (n = 30), first-degree relatives (n = 27), and unrelated age-matched healthy controls (n = 25) completed a disgust conditioning task in which one neutral food item (conditioned stimulus; CS+) was follow

Disgust as a primary emotional system and its clinical relevance.

This paper advocates for considering disgust as a primary emotional system within Panksepp's Affective Neuroscience framework, which has the potential to improve the efficacy of psychotherapy with obsessive-compulsive disorder, hypochondriasis, and emetophobia. In 2007, Toronchuk and Ellis provided comprehensive evidence that DISGUST system, as they defined it, matched all Panksepp's criteria for a primary emotional system. A debate ensued and was not unambiguously resolved. This paper is an attempt to resume this discussion and supplement it with the data that accumulated since then on DISGUS

Disgust sensitivity mediates the effects of race on contamination aversion.

African Americans report greater contamination aversion than European Americans. Few studies have attempted to identify potential causes for this elevated contamination aversion, though existing research and theory suggests this may be partly due to concomitant heightened disgust sensitivity. The present study examined the relations between race, disgust sensitivity, and contamination aversion among African and European Americans. A convenience sample of fourhundred and twenty-nine participants completed the Disgust Scale - Revised (DS-R) and the Padua Inventory - Revised (PI-R). African Ameri

Disgust and Sexual Arousal in Young Adult Men and Women.

Previous research suggested that disgust may interfere with healthy sexual functioning by demonstrating that women with sexual pain disorders are characterized by heightened disgust propensity, relatively strong (physiological and subjective) disgust responses when exposed to sexual stimuli, and relatively strong automatic sex-disgust memory associations. To broaden the understanding of the relationship between sex and disgust, Study 1 tested the relationship between trait disgust and sexual functioning in both men (N = 109) and women (N = 187), and showed that specifically for women both rela

Dissociation of neuronal, electrodermal, and evaluative responses in disgust extinction.

Disgust extinction is an important mechanism relevant for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. However, only a few studies have investigated disgust extinction. Moreover, because disgust sensitivity (DS) is considered as a relevant factor for learning processes, this study also investigated the potential relationship between DS and disgust extinction learning. The aim of this study was to explore the neuronal correlates of disgust extinction, as well as changes in skin conductance responses (SCRs) and evaluative conditioning. Twenty subjects were exposed to a differential extinction paradig

Trait anxiety, disgust sensitivity, and the hierarchic structure of fears.

This paper describes an evaluation of Taylor's (1998) hierarchic model of fears and its relationship to trait anxiety and disgust sensitivity (DS). In Study 1 (N=420), a confirmatory factor analysis supported a hierarchic structure of fears. Next, an analysis using structural equation modeling indicated that trait anxiety is associated with claustrophobic and social fears, whereas DS is associated with all four fear subtypes examined (claustrophobic, social, blood-injection-injury and animal). However, trait anxiety and DS did not account for all variance shared by fear subtypes. The addition

The role of disgust in faintness elicited by blood and injection stimuli.

To examine the role of disgust in blood-injection fear and faintness, 79 individuals high and low in disgust and distressed either more by blood or injections were exposed to both a blood slide and a needle slide. Self-reported faintness and systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured. High disgust individuals reported more faintness to both slides, but those who were more distressed by blood reported more faintness to the blood slide and those who were more distressed by needles reported more fear to the needle slide. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure assessments manifested a
