An observational study of safe and risky practices in funeral homes in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Funeral home personnel are at risk of exposure to infectious hazards. The high prevalence of infectious diseases in South Africa means that these workers and family members of deceased individuals are vulnerable to infection if proper safety measures and equipment are not used. OBJECTIVES: To collect observational information on funeral industry practices in order to assess the safety of handling corpses and exposure to risk that could result in disease transmission. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted across two locations from August to October 2015. Funeral homes in

The environmental impact of diagnosis and therapy in obstructive sleep Apnea: A systematic review.

Healthcare contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, yet the environmental impact of sleep medicine, particularly the diagnosis and therapy of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), remains poorly characterized. We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, and Embase (2015-2025) for studies on OSA care reporting environmental metrics (carbon footprint, energy use, resource consumption) or healthcare resource utilization. Supplementary searches identified additional non-peer-reviewed sustainability-focused studies that have been presented at conferences. Of 19 primary peer-revie

Sharp thinking.

Nurses are the healthcare professionals most at risk from neeldestick and sharps injuries, according to the latest figures from the RCN's EPINet project. During 2004, 1,990 injuries were reported from the 20 self-selecting participating sites. Nurses sustained 43 per cent of these injuries. Disposable syringes and needles were the most common equipment to cause injury. Although discouraged, 4 per cent of injuries occurred during recapping of needles. Just under a third of injuries were sustained by staff other than the original user of the sharp.

Gastrointestinal: cecal volvulus.

The concern that re-usable equipment may be a source of cross-infection has prompted the increased use of disposable laryngoscope blades. We conducted a study investigating the duration of laryngoscopy and the peak force generated using various laryngoscope blades. Five blades were studied: one reusable Macintosh 3 blade, one disposable metal blade and three plastic disposable blades. Sixty anaesthetists performed laryngoscopy on a mannequin using each of the five blades presented in a random order. This was then repeated with a rigid collar applied to the mannequin. The mean force applied wit

Healthcare waste management practice, associated factors and barriers among waste handlers in healthcare facilities of Gondar City, Ethiopia.

Healthcare waste poses significant risks to human health and the environment when improperly managed. In low-income countries such as Ethiopia, healthcare waste management remains a major public health concern, particularly among waste handlers who are directly exposed during waste handling processes. This study aimed to assess healthcare waste management practices, associated factors, and barriers among waste handlers in healthcare facilities in Gondar City, Northwest Ethiopia. An institution-based mixed-methods study was conducted from May 30 to June 30, 2025, among 372 waste handlers select

Steam sterilisation of disposable surgical gowns does not compromise resistance to wet microbial penetration.

BACKGROUND: Reuse of disposable medical products is common practice in veterinary medicine; however, studies on the safety of such reuse are often lacking. This study aimed to determine whether steam sterilisation of disposable surgical gowns compromises their resistance to wet microbial penetration. METHODS: Twenty surgical gowns were removed from their sterile packaging, manipulated, wetted, dried and subsequently repacked and steam sterilised. The protocol was performed once (groups A and C) or twice (groups B and D) for both spunbond/meltblown/meltblown/meltblown/spunbond (SMMMS) (groups

[Design and application of a disposable self-destructed and sheath-encased sterile acupuncture needle].

A kind of disposable self-destructed and sheath-encased sterile acupuncture needle is designed to efficiently solve the issues of safety and sterilization encountered in the routine operation of acupuncture. The needle consists of three components, i.e. the needle body, the sheath and the locker. The needle body is movable and rotatable in the sheath, but can not be separated from the sheath. It is convenient for the operator to perform the lifting-thrusting and twisting techniques, and to prevent the non-punctured portion of the body from being out off the sheath so that a sterile confined ro

Safety and reliability of reused expensive disposables in shoulder arthroscopy procedures.

SummaryReprocessing single-use arthroscopic instruments - particularly radio-frequency devices and suture-passing devices - has become standard practice in Zhejiang Province, China. Although this approach offers substantial economic advantages, emerging evidence suggests that reuse of certain items may pose elevated risks of thermal injury and mechanical failure. Here, we discuss the prevalence of this practice within China, outline documented hazards, propose evidence-based mitigation strategies, and explore the ethical dimensions of resource-limited surgical care.

Disposable Ureteroscopes in Urology: Current State and Future Prospects.

Ureteroscopy is the most common surgical modality for stone treatment. Reusable flexible ureteroscopes are delicate instruments that require expensive maintenance and repairs. Multiple single use ureteroscopes have been developed recently to combat the expensive and time-intensive sterilization and repair of ureteroscopes. Although multiple studies have looked at different aspects of reusable and single use ureteroscopes, there is significant heterogeneity in performance measures and cost between the 2 categories, and neither has a clear advantage. Both can be used successfully, and individual

Association of ethylene-oxide-induced IgE antibodies with symptoms in dialysis patients.

IgE-type antibodies to human serum albumin/ethylene oxide conjugates were determined in 153 patients (140 unselected, 13 selected for presence of eosinophilia) on regular dialysis treatment by radioallergosorbent test (RAST) techniques. In 10.7% of unselected patients and 30.8% of selected patients, RAST values suggested ethylene oxide sensitisation. High RAST values were commonly associated with anaphylactoid reactions during dialysis and with chronic asthma. Ethylene oxide antibodies should be sought routinely in patients presenting with these symptoms and the necessity of ethylene oxide ste

Trends in distribution of harm-reduction equipment for persons who use drugs in Norway, 2016-2022. Archival analysis based on nationwide data collections.

Harm-reduction strategies are interventions designed to mitigate the adverse effects of substance use, without requiring abstinence. Evidence supports the effectiveness and efficacy of harm reduction as a broad framework for addressing illicit drug use. To ensure the implementation of these measures, Center for Alcohol and Drug Research (KORFOR) was mandated by the Norwegian Directorate of Health in 2016 to annually assess municipalities' adherence to harm-reduction guidelines. This study aims to present national trends in the distribution of harm-reduction equipment for the prevention of infe
