Sleepiness enhances distraction during a monotonous task.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Although sleepiness appears to heighten distraction from the task at hand, especially if the latter is dull and monotonous, this aspect of sleep loss has not been assessed in any systematic way. Distractions are a potential cause of performance lapses (as are micro-sleeps). Here, we investigate the effects of sleepiness on a monotonous task, with and without distraction. DESIGN: Repeated Measures 2 x 2 counterbalanced design, comprising Sleepiness (night sleep restricted to 5 hours x normal sleep) and Distraction (distraction x no distraction). SETTING: Participants underwe

Osmotic pump with potential for bone lengthening distracts continuously in vitro and in vivo.

BACKGROUND: In pediatric orthopedics, long bone lengthening procedures are routinely performed using manual, motorized or magnetically controlled implants. This study aims to prove expansion of a newly designed osmotic pump prior to long bone lengthening in living organisms and to rule out any complications related to in vivo conditions, such as congestion of the semipermeable membrane, local infection, or lack of water to drive the osmotic pump, as well as to compare in vivo and in vitro expansion data. METHODS: Osmotic pumps, which were designed to distract a plate osteosynthesis, were inse

Driver Monitoring System Using Computer Vision for Real-Time Detection of Fatigue, Distraction and Emotion via Facial Landmarks and Deep Learning.

Car accidents remain a leading cause of death worldwide, with drowsiness and distraction accounting for roughly 25% of fatal crashes in Ecuador. This study presents a real-time driver monitoring system that uses computer vision and deep learning to detect fatigue, distraction, and emotions from facial expressions. It combines a MobileNetV2-based CNN trained on RAF-DB for emotion recognition and MediaPipe's 468 facial landmarks to compute the EAR (Eye Aspect Ratio), the MAR (Mouth Aspect Ratio), the gaze, and the head pose. Tests with 27 participants in both real and simulated driving environme

How dangerous is looking away from the road? Algorithms predict crash risk from glance patterns in naturalistic driving.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, the authors used algorithms to estimate driver distraction and predict crash and near-crash risk on the basis of driver glance behavior using the data set of the 100-Car Naturalistic Driving Study. BACKGROUND: Driver distraction has been a leading cause of motor vehicle crashes, but the relationship between distractions and crash risk lacks detailed quantification. METHOD: The authors compared 24 algorithms that varied according to how they incorporated three potential contributors to distraction--glance duration, glance history, and glance location--on how well the

Young driver risk taking: a description of dangerous driving situations among 16- to 19-year-old drivers.

Dangerous drinking and driving situations contribute heavily to morbidity and mortality among older adolescents. One hundred ninety-two high school drivers related 662 dangerous driving incidents (430 by males, 232 by females) in which they were involved in the preceding 6 months. Dangerous driving incidents were characterized by reckless intent, driving late at night, riding with other peers involving alcohol and drugs, reporting impaired driving, and distractions in the car. Adolescent drivers are commonly involved in dangerous drinking-driving situations with peers and without significant c

Heart rate dynamics for cognitive load estimation in a driving simulation task.

Cognitive load (CL) is one of the leading factors moderating states and performance among drivers. Heavily increased CL may contribute to the development of mental stress. Averaged heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) indices are shown to reflect CL levels in different tasks. The aim of this large-scale study was to explore how accurately HR and HRV metrics can differentiate between varying CL conditions during driving. Participants (N = 892, 44% female, from 18 to 79 years old) performed simulated driving in highway and urban scenarios. The n-back task was used as a mental distrac

The Mediating Effect of Smartphone Distraction Between Nomophobia and Intuitive Eating Among Lebanese Young Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Significant apprehension has been triggered concerning various behavioral modalities in humans, including eating habits, which have been influenced by the increasing omnipresence of smartphone reliance. In fact, extreme digital interaction, known as nomophobia, disturbs both cognitive functions and behavioral regulation. To illustrate, smartphone distraction, which is characterized as the attentional intrusion stemming from screen mediation, plays a major role in adjusting nutritional intake. However, the processes driving these relationships have yet to be investigated. T

Exploring inattention and distraction in the SafetyNet Accident Causation Database.

Distraction and inattention are considered to be very important and prevalent factors in the causation of road accidents. There have been many recent research studies which have attempted to understand the circumstances under which a driver becomes distracted or inattentive and how distraction/inattention can be prevented. Both factors are thought to have become more important in recent times partly due to the evolution of in-vehicle information and communication technology. This study describes a methodology that was developed to understand when factors such as distraction and inattention may

Is distraction on the road associated with maladaptive mobile phone use? A systematic review.

Maladaptive Mobile Phone Use (MMPU) (also known as Smartphone Addiction, Nomophobia, Fear of Missing Out, or Problematic Mobile Phone Use) is a growing mental health problem. However, the health and safety consequences of MMPU remain unexplored in many real-life contexts. A potential setting where MMPU may have some negative repercussions is on the road. It is well established that road users (e.g., drivers, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and cyclists) increasingly injure themselves or others due to distractions such as phone use while on the road. Emerging research suggests that MMPU is a possib

Profiling crash-associated factors and injury risk patterns among lost-in-thought (daydreaming) drivers: a combined cluster-sequence analysis approach.

Cognitive distraction, particularly in the form of being lost in thought or daydreaming, is a significant yet underexamined contributor to traffic crashes. This study investigates crash patterns and risk profiles associated with drivers who experienced lost-in-thought distraction at the time of a crash in Washington State. Using cluster correspondence analysis (CCA), distinct associations between crash characteristics and driver attributes were uncovered. In addition, process mining was employed to identify typical sequences of crash events. Three meaningful clusters emerged. Cluster 1 involve

Driver inattention and driver distraction in serious casualty crashes: data from the Australian National Crash In-depth Study.

Driver inattention and driver distraction represent a major problem in road safety. Although both are believed to contribute to increased crash risk, there is currently limited reliable information on their role in crashes. The current study used in-depth data from the Australian National Crash In-depth Study to investigate the role of driver distraction and inattention in serious casualty crashes. The sample included 856 crashes from 2000 to 2011, in which at least one party was admitted to hospital due to crash-related injuries. Crashes were coded using a taxonomy of driver inattention that

Driving error and anxiety related to iPod mp3 player use in a simulated driving experience.

Driver distraction due to cellular phone usage has repeatedly been shown to increase the risk of vehicular accidents; however, the literature regarding the use of other personal electronic devices while driving is relatively sparse. It was hypothesized that the usage of an mp3 player would result in an increase in not only driving error while operating a driving simulator, but driver anxiety scores as well. It was also hypothesized that anxiety scores would be positively related to driving errors when using an mp3 player. 32 participants drove through a set course in a driving simulator twice,

The biomechanical evaluation of magnetic forces to drive osteogenesis in newborn's with cleft lip and palate.

This study examined the potential for dental magnets to act as a driving force for osteogenesis in the palate of newborns with a unilateral cleft lip and palate. In the first part of the study dental magnets were arranged in a set up mimicking a distraction device and the curves of the magnetic attraction force versus gap distance curves generated, with and without the presence of palatal rugae tissue in between both sides of the distraction device. The attraction forces ranged from 1 to 12 N depending on the gap distance and the presence of soft tissue in the gap. In the second part of the st

Optimizing variables for contingency management among infant caregivers using a simulated purchase task.

Behavioral economics offers a framework for understanding choice making around public health concerns such as drug use and distracted driving. Such a framework could be beneficial to understanding caregiver choices related to arranging an infant sleep environment. Nonadherence to infant sleep safety guidelines provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics increases the risk of sleep-related infant deaths. The present study adopted a willingness-to-accept purchase task procedure, used in previous research to evaluate variables that predict abstaining from consuming alcohol, to evaluate intenti

Mobile phones and "inattention" injuries: the risk is real.

Mobile phones though indispensable have a flip side: in fact, they adversely affect our ergonomics and mobility. They share an etiologic burden on the changed profile of inattention injuries; and now have proven to be a necessary evil in the changing lifestyles. We aimed to evaluate the role of mobile phones as a causative factor in these head and neck injuries. We evaluated various injury statistics published throughout the world that attributed the concurrence of neurological injuries to portable handheld communication devices. We evaluated the dangers posed by simultaneous engagement on pho

Effects of an integrated collision warning system on risk compensation behavior: An examination under naturalistic driving conditions.

Collision warning systems can improve traffic safety, while their safety benefit may be lessened due to improper risk compensation or system misuse. There are limited studies of advanced safety systems increasing unexpected risky driving behavior, especially with adolescent drivers. This study is designed to address this research gap in two main areas: 1) it seeks to examine whether and how the introduction of advanced driver-assistance systems influences drivers' risk compensation behavior (e.g., increase of hard braking frequency), and 2) it investigates key factors (e.g., distraction) that

Examining simultaneous associations of four emotion regulation strategies with abnormal eating behaviors/attitudes in early adolescents.

Previous research has suggested that emotion regulation strategies (ERSs) are associated with abnormal eating behaviors and attitudes (AEBs). Available data have demonstrated that frequent rumination, a major maladaptive ERS, is associated with elevated AEBs, whereas adaptive ERSs, such as problem-solving and cognitive reappraisal, showed negative associations with AEBs. Most previous studies examined the association of a single ERS with AEBs. Therefore, any significant associations between an individual ERS and AEB reported in previous research might stem from spurious correlations. The curre

Internal distraction osteogenesis to correct symptomatic cephalocranial disproportion.

BACKGROUND: Cephalocranial disproportion describes a state of volume mismatch between brain size and intracranial space. Nonsyndromic single-suture craniosynostosis patients can present with symptoms from elevated intracranial pressure because of inadequate or delayed treatment. The purpose of this study was to present five sagittal synostosis children with symptomatic cephalocranial disproportion treated with cranial vault distraction osteogenesis. METHODS: Asymmetric transverse internal distraction osteogenesis was performed to preferentially expand the posterior cranium. A wider base plate
