BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) colonize only foveolar gastric-type mucosa and are associated with active chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer. The aim of this study was to investigate whether H. pylori can also be found in Meckel's diverticulum which contains heterotopic gastric mucosa.
METHODS: Biopsy specimens of Meckel's diverticulum resected in Queen Mary Hospital, University of Hong Kong, during the 10 year period 1986-1995 were retrieved and reviewed. Those containing gastric heterotopia were examined for the presence of H. pylori, using Warthin-Starry silver stain.

We treated a 12 year old boy with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. There were multiple diverticula in the oesophagus, stomach, colon and urinary bladder. Most prominent was the giant epiphrenic diverticulum of the oesophagus, a rare finding as a complication of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

RATIONALE: Gastric cancer associated with prepyloric diverticulum is the most uncommon form of gastric cancer. It may be very challenging to diagnose as the lesion located among gastric antrum, pancreas, and transverse colon. We here reported a rare case of gastric cancer associated with gastric diverticulum involved part of transverse colon and head of pancreas.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Abdominal pain and vomiting for 5 days.
DIAGNOSES: First diagnosis: colon cancer. Final diagnosis: gastric cancer from gastric diverticulum.
INTERVENTIONS: Three cycles of chemotherapy and operation.

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is rare neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract associated with high rates of malignant transformation. GIST has been found largely in the stomach, small bowel, colon and rectum, and esophagus, but about 5% are found in other locations. Gastric diverticula are uncommonly seen in childhood. They typically emanate from the posterior wall of the stomach near the gastroesophageal junction. The authors report on a 15-year-old adolescent boy who presented with a symptomatic gastric diverticulum that was surgically resected. Potential pitfalls in diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

BACKGROUND: In the developed world, small bowel obstruction accounts for 20% of all acute surgical admissions. The aetiology for majority of these cases includes postoperative adhesions and herniae. INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic pancreas is defined as pancreatic tissue without a real anatomical or vascular connection to the pancreas. It can be found in the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, Meckel's diverticulum, colon gall bladder, umbilicus, fallopian tube, mediastinum, spleen and liver. Complications of heterotopic pancreas are inflammation, bleeding, obstruction, malignant transformation, carcinoid syndrome, jejunojejunal intussusception and ileus, but it is usually asymptomatic and diagnosed only during examinations for other diseases.

The effect of cimetidine, an H2-receptor blocking agent, on the secretion of 99mTc-pertechnetate was studied in 11 dogs. In cimetidine-treated animals, there was increased retention of 99mTc-pertechnetate by the gastric wall as compared with the untreated animals. The results indicate the potential use of cimetidine for enhanced visualization of Meckel's diverticulum, Barrett's esophagus, and the stomach, with 99mTc-pertechnetate.
