Congenital heart diseases in the boxer dog: A retrospective study of 105 cases (1998-2005).

Subaortic stenosis (SAS) is one of the most common congenital heart diseases (CHD) in dogs with Boxers being predominantly affected. However, the increasing availability of modern diagnostic imaging systems now allows a better assessment of cardiac morphology and function, thereby facilitating early detection of CHD in awake animals. In this context, the case records of Boxer dogs diagnosed with CHD using echocardiography combined with Doppler mode, were retrospectively reviewed (1998-2005). One hundred and five Boxers exhibiting either a single CHD (53/105, 50.5%) or association of several CH

Evaluation of hepatobiliary ultrasound scores in healthy dogs and dogs with liver diseases.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Ultrasonography is the first-line method for examining the canine liver. Hepatic ultrasound scoring systems are widely described in human medicine, yet there is no information on the use of semi-quantitative ultrasound scoring systems in canine liver diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the hepatobiliary ultrasound scores between physically healthy dogs and dogs with primary liver diseases confirmed by clinical, biochemical, and histological parameters. We also evaluated the putative correlations between ultrasound scores and ALT or ALP levels. Moreover, the severity of u

Parasite control practices and public perception of parasitic diseases: A survey of dog and cat owners.

Drugs used in the control of internal and external parasites in companion animals play a crucial role in Animal and Public Health. To ensure continuing protection, these drugs should be administered regularly and in intervals, as suggested by the manufacturers. To assess parasite control practices and other related factors, including the degree of public awareness on the topic, 312 dog and cat owners were surveyed while attending the Small Animal Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Lisbon University. Results showed that 89.7% of the dogs were currently being treated with endoparasitic dr

Exploring the Role of the MAPK Signalling Pathway in Dog Immunity: From Cancer to Parasitic Diseases.

Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are intracellular signalling proteins that modulate several cellular processes, such as proliferation, cytokine production and survival. Like humans, dogs may exhibit changes in MAPK signalling under pathological conditions. Alterations in this pathway have been observed in several types of cancers in dogs and have been widely studied in veterinary oncology. In humans, several studies have focused on the MAPK pathway in cancer, inflammatory diseases and parasitic diseases; however, the role of the MAPK pathway in parasitic diseases has not been extensi

It shouldn't happen to a dog … or a veterinarian: clinical paradigms for canine vector-borne diseases.

Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) comprise a diverse group of viral, bacterial, protozoal, and helminth pathogens, transmitted predominantly by ticks and fleas, and cause significant health problems for dogs worldwide. Growing numbers of reports indicate that CVBDs are emerging in regions where they previously did not exist and this, combined with pathogens that are inherently difficult to detect, is providing companion animal veterinarians with some significant diagnostic challenges. This review discusses six paradigms concerning the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and zoonotic implicati

A comparison of five different bone resorption markers in osteosarcoma-bearing dogs, normal dogs, and dogs with orthopedic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Various bone resorption markers in humans are useful for supporting the diagnosis of malignant skeletal pathology, with certain bone resorption markers appearing to be more discriminatory for detecting cancer-induced osteolysis than others. Canine osteosarcoma (OSA) is characterized by focal bone destruction, but a systematic investigation for determining which bone resorption marker best supports the diagnosis of OSA in dogs has not been reported. HYPOTHESIS: Dogs with OSA will have increased concentrations of bone resorption markers compared with healthy dogs and dogs with ortho

Nonhypoalbuminemic Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Dogs as Disease Model.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing worldwide, emphasizing the need of relevant models, as dogs spontaneously affected by IBD may be, for better knowledge of the disease's physiopathology. METHODS: We studied 22 client-owned dogs suffering from IBD without protein loss and 14 control dogs. Biopsies were obtained from the duodenum, ileum, and colon. Inflammatory grade was assessed by histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and chemokine analysis. The expression of Toll-like receptors (TLR) in mucosa was immunohistochemically evaluated. Antibody levels agai

Relation between periodontal disease and systemic diseases in dogs.

Periodontal disease (PD) is one of the most frequent and widespread inflammatory diseases in dogs. The onset of PD pathogenesis is prompted by the dental microbial biofilm combined with the animal immune-inflammatory response. Along with local effects, systemic consequences can occur secondary to dental plaque-associated bacteraemia, affecting distant tissues and organs. The main goal of this retrospective study was to access and evaluate the association between PD and systemic consequences (renal, hepatic and cardiac) in a group of 136 dogs. Clinical records of all animals were assessed for g

Prevalence of leptospirosis in healthy dogs and dogs with kidney disease in Klang Valley, Malaysia.

Leptospirosis is under-reported and remarkably neglected in Malaysia, especially in companion animals. In recent years, dogs have become popular pets and potentially act as one of the risk factors for human leptospiral infection. The purpose of this study was to determine the serological and molecular status of leptospirosis in healthy and dogs with kidney disease in Klang Valley, Malaysia and to gain insight of the possible serovars involved in the dog population in Klang Valley, Malaysia. Blood samples were obtained from 57 dogs (19 kidney disease patient; 38 healthy dogs, respectively). Ser

Urinary markers in healthy young and aged dogs and dogs with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine concentrations only detect a decrease of > 75% of renal functional mass. Therefore, there is a need for markers that allow early detection and localization of renal damage. HYPOTHESIS: Urinary albumin (uALB), C-reactive protein (uCRP), retinol binding protein (uRBP), and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (uNAG) concentrations are increased in dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD) compared with healthy controls and in healthy older dogs compared with young dogs. ANIMALS: Ten dogs with CKD, 10 healthy young dogs (age 1-3 years), and 10 health

Diseases associated with hypercobalaminemia in dogs in United Kingdom: A retrospective study of 47 dogs.

Cobalamin concentration is often assessed in clinical practice but little is known about the significance of hypercobalaminemia. The objective of this retrospective study was to identify the conditions associated with hypercobalaminemia in dogs and to investigate association with clinicopathological variables. Medical records of dogs having serum cobalamin measured between 2016 and 2018 were reviewed. One hundred sixty dogs were included and 47 (29%) showed hypercobalaminemia. Dogs with hypercobalaminemia had gastrointestinal (57%), hepatic (11%), neurological (11%), endocrine (9%), renal (4%)

Legg Calvé Perthes disease in the dog.

Legg Calvé Perthes disease (LCPD) is a developmental abnormality that usually affects young small breed dogs. Although the etiology is still uncertain, the pathogenesis is very similar to that described in humans. Diagnosis with physical examination and medical imaging is relatively easy. Treatments offered in dogs, mainly surgical, are also presented. Legg Calvé Perthes disease has many similarities between children and puppies. Dog is therefore an interesting spontaneous model of aseptic osteonecrosis.
