Rotational swimming tendencies in the dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Anecdotal evidence suggests that dolphins placed in a pool exhibit stereotypic swimming in circles. The present study confirmed these observations in a sample of thirteen dolphins. The majority of dolphins (84.6%) showed highly consistent directional swimming in counterclockwise circles. The latter directionality held throughout the circadian cycle and resisted environmental manipulations. Only social interaction was capable of altering the directionality of circumnavigation. The consistency of unidirectional swimming is considered paradoxical in view of the existing evidence regarding the alt

The Morphology of the Tongue in the Spinner Dolphin (Stenella longirostris).

Assessments of the tongue morphology contribute to the understanding of evolutionary processes associated with food and feeding habits. In this sense, this study aimed to describe the tongue morphology in the Spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris) and understand possible morphological associations with its food and feeding habits. Macroscopic dissections and light as well as scanning electron microscopy analyses of three Spinner dolphin tongues were performed. The tongues are elongated and exhibit a dorsal surface divided into three regions, namely the apex, the body and the root. Two types o

Cardiorespiratory coupling in the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Introduction: The bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is an intermittent breather, where the breath begins with an exhalation followed by inhalation and an extended inter-breath interval ranging from 10 to 40 s. Breathing has been shown to alter both the instantaneous heart rate (if H) and stroke volume (iSV) in the bottlenose dolphin, with a transitory ventilatory tachycardia following the breath, and an exponential decrease to a stable if H around 40 beats • min-1 during the inter-breath period. As the total breath duration in the dolphin is around 1 s, it is not possible to assess the c

Biomechanical properties of female dolphin reproductive tissue.

Whales, dolphins, and porpoises have unusual vaginal folds of unknown function(s) that are hypothesized to play an important role in sexual selection. The potential function of vaginal folds was assessed by testing the mechanical properties of common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) reproductive tract tissues in 6 different regions and across age classes in post-mortem specimens. We assessed the regional (local) and overall effective elastic modulus of tissues using indentation and tensile tests, respectively. We explore the non-linear mechanical response of biological tissues, which ar

Bacterial infection in an Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris).

One pregnant captive Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris), with a body length of 225 cm, was found dead on 8 June 2009. The dolphin was anorexic and circling at the bottom of the pool before death. Laboratory tests revealed an increased leukocyte count and decreased platelet count; increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate; and slightly decreased red blood cell count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit. Alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, and glucose were significantly decreased. Moreover, uric acid and alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels were elevated. A 57-cm fetus was r

Lymphangiomyomatosis in the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

The first case of lymphangiomyomatosis in a marine mammal is reported from a stranded male Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). This progressive proliferative disease involved the lungs and the mediastinal and probably mesenteric lymph nodes. An extraordinarily low level of testosterone may have been pathologically significant since all reported cases of this disease in humans occur in females.

Natural fatal infection of Tembusu virus in bottlenose dolphins in Thailand.

Interspecies transmission of viruses poses significant risks to animal and human health. Tembusu virus (TMUV), an emerging flavivirus, is primarily associated with avian diseases. This study reports the first documented natural infection of TMUV in mammals, specifically zoo dolphins in Thailand, offering insights into its evolution, transmission dynamics, and zoonotic potential. In July 2023, three bottlenose dolphins developed neurological symptoms and died. Postmortem analyses, including histopathology, immunohistochemistry, high-throughput sequencing, and transmission electron microscopy, c

Dolphins reduce hearing sensitivity in anticipation of repetitive impulsive noise exposures.

The auditory steady-state response (ASSR) was continuously measured in two bottlenose dolphins during impulse noise exposures to determine whether observed head movements coincided with actual changes to auditory system sensitivity. Impulses were generated by a seismic air gun at a fixed inter-pulse interval of 10 s. ASSR amplitudes were extracted from the instantaneous electroencephalogram using coherent averaging within a sliding analysis window. A decline in ASSR amplitude was seen during the time interval between air gun impulses, followed by an elevation in ASSR amplitude immediately afte

Output compensation of auditory brainstem responses in dolphins and sea lions.

Cochlear dispersion causes increasing delays between neural responses from high-frequency regions in the cochlear base and lower-frequency regions toward the apex. For broadband stimuli, this can lead to neural responses that are out-of-phase, decreasing the amplitude of farfield neural response measurements. In the present study, cochlear traveling-wave speed and effects of dispersion on farfield auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were investigated by first deriving narrowband ABRs in bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions using the high-pass subtractive masking technique. Derived-band

Assessing the effectiveness of environmental enrichment in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

Environmental enrichment is often used to improve well-being and reduce stereotyped behaviors in animals under human care. However, the use of objects to enrich animal environments should not be considered to be effective until its success has been scientifically demonstrated. This study was conducted at Asterix Park in France in April 2009. The study investigated the use of 21 familiar objects with a group of six bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). The dolphin trainers introduced four different objects into the dolphin pool every day on a rotating basis. Using a focal-object sampling me

Herpesvirus in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus): cultivation, epidemiology, and associated pathology.

We studied the pathology, epidemiology, and clinical significance of genital herpesvirus infection in a zoo collection of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Samples from the genital mucosa of male (n=21) and female (n=15) dolphins were tested by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the DNA polymerase of herpesvirus. Herpesvirus infection was significantly associated with the occurrence of mucosal plaques on penis (n=3) or vulva (n=4). Biopsies from a penile plaque showed epithelial hyperplasia by histology, contained herpesvirus-like particles by electron microscopy, and tes

Polyparasitism in Two-Stranded Dolphins: Multisystem Pathological Alterations and Cellular Responses.

Polyparasitism is frequently documented in cetaceans; however, the pathological consequences of concurrent multispecies helminth infections and their associated tissue responses remain incompletely understood. This study characterized multispecies helminth infections in two live-stranded dolphins from the Andaman coast of Thailand, a spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris) and a pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), using integrated postmortem, parasitological, molecular, histopathological, and immunohistochemical approaches. Both dolphins harbored helminths involving multiple orga

Skin Marks in Critically Endangered Taiwanese Humpback Dolphins (Sousa chinensis taiwanensis).

As long-lived apex predators, Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) are key indicators of marine coastal environmental health. Skin marks can be observed on dorsal body surfaces that are visible during mark-recapture studies that rely on photo-identification (photo-ID) methods. Skin mark prevalence may be an indicator of environmental or anthropogenic stressors in the ecosystem, which may lead to individual and/or population-level health concerns. The prevalence of marks of anthropogenic origin was assessed in the Critically Endangered S. chinensis taiwanensis population along the c

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia and submersion bradycardia in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

Among the many factors that influence the cardiovascular adjustments of marine mammals is the act of respiration at the surface, which facilitates rapid gas exchange and tissue re-perfusion between dives. We measured heart rate (fH) in six adult male bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) spontaneously breathing at the surface to quantify the relationship between respiration and fH, and compared this with fH during submerged breath-holds. We found that dolphins exhibit a pronounced respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) during surface breathing, resulting in a rapid increase in fH after a breath

Measurement of hydrodynamic force generation by swimming dolphins using bubble DPIV.

Attempts to measure the propulsive forces produced by swimming dolphins have been limited. Previous uses of computational hydrodynamic models and gliding experiments have provided estimates of thrust production by dolphins, but these were indirect tests that relied on various assumptions. The thrust produced by two actively swimming bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) was directly measured using digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV). For dolphins swimming in a large outdoor pool, the DPIV method used illuminated microbubbles that were generated in a narrow sheet from a finely porous h
