Psychosocial influences on female 'protection' among cynomolgus macaques.

We evaluated atherosclerosis (coronary artery, aortic and carotid bifurcation), plasma lipids, and blood pressure in 15 male and 23 female cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis). In addition, female social behavior and ovarian function were monitored. The females lived in stable (unmanipulated) or unstable (periodically altered composition) social groups while males lived in stable groupings. All animals were fed for 30 months an atherogenic diet which resulted in moderate hyperlipoproteinemia (median total plasma cholesterol congruent to 275 mg/dl). Socially dominant females had less exten

Allopregnanolone promotes success in food competition in subordinate male rats.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Allopregnanolone or 3α-hydroxy-5α-pregnan-20-one (AlloP) is normally sedative and anxiolytic, but can under provoking circumstances paradoxically induce aggressive behavior. Therefore, it is of particular interest to determine if there is a relationship between an anxiolytic effect and aggressive behavior following AlloP administration. METHOD: Male Wistar rats were housed in triads comprising of 1 young rat (35 days) and 2 older rats (55 days), with the intent of producing a social hierarchy. The triads were sampled for total serum testosterone and submitted to a social chal

CRH receptor antagonism reverses the effect of social subordination upon central GABAA receptor binding in estradiol-treated ovariectomized female rhesus monkeys.

Persistent exposure to environmental stressors causes dysregulation of the limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (LHPA) axis and alters GABAA receptor (GABAAR) levels throughout the brain. Social subordination in socially housed female rhesus results in distinctive stress-related physiological and behavioral phenotypes that are dependent on the ovarian hormone estradiol (E2). In the present study, we utilized ovariectomized adult female rhesus monkeys undergoing hormone replacement with E2 to test the hypothesis that the chronic psychosocial stress of subordination alters GABAAR binding potent

A battle in the hive against the Queen Bee: reaction of female subordinates' unconcious mind.

When women in leadership roles act antagonistically toward female subordinates, it's referred to as the Queen Bee Syndrome. Though it often appears as a top-down dynamic, little is known regarding possible subordinate blowback. With the goal to look into the unconscious reactions of female subordinates performing under female leaders in male-dominated workplaces, this exploratory study utilized a qualitative method. Nine female professionals from an array of industries took part in semi-structured interviews, and MAXQDA was employed to assess the data using both inductive as well as deductive

When Nerve Growth Factor Met Behavior.

Since its first characterization in the early 1950s, the role of the polypeptidic nerve growth factor (NGF) in controlling behavior remained elusive. Since the mid-1980s, we undertook a series of experiments aimed at elucidating the biological role(s) played by neurotrophins, particularly NGF, in adult rodents. At the beginning, we concentrated on the submandibular salivary gland of the male mouse, which was known to store massive amount of NGF. We found that under specific stress conditions, the salivary NGF is released in the bloodstream: intermale fighting between isolated males was the fir

Naltrexone blocks amphetamine-induced hyperactivity, but not disruption of social and agonistic behavior in mice and squirrel monkeys.

Significant anatomical overlap of opioid and dopamine receptors as well as reciprocity of control over synthesis, metabolism, and release of opioid peptides and dopamine in brain suggests functional interactions between the two systems. In the first of two studies, the behavioral effects of amphetamine and naltrexone alone, and in combination were studied in established groups of socially interacting squirrel monkeys. Naltrexone (0.1-10.0 mg/kg, IM) increased locomotion and marking behavior in subordinate monkeys. The frequency of social initiatives directed at treated subordinate monkeys by u

Testosterone removal in rats results in a decrease in social aggression and a loss of social dominance.

Alpha male rats from mixed sex colony groups were tested for aggressiveness toward nonaggressive male intruders. Afterward, they were castrated and implanted with testosterone filled Silastic tubes, castrated and implanted with empty tubes, or sham castrated and implanted with empty tubes. There were significant declines in the aggressiveness (lateral attacks, bites, and piloerection but not on-top) of castrated rats without testosterone replacement but not in castrated rats with testosterone replacement. At a second operation, castrated animals had their testosterone capsules removed or had t

A disrupted human shield: the COVID lockdown alters carnivore dynamics in favour of a dominant competitor.

A 'human shield' effect occurs when a species associates with humans to avoid predators or competitors. Understanding how this effect shapes species interactions is critical as anthropogenic pressures increase globally. Despite broad theoretical support for this effect, its context-dependency remains unclear, especially in urban systems. We used the COVID-19 lockdowns as a natural experiment to separate the effects of the (static) human footprint and (dynamic) human recreational activity increases during lockdowns to test hypotheses related to a 'dynamic human shield' in a competitive species

Infertility in Nigeria as portrayed in movies: the role of cultural beliefs and societal attitudes.

Infertility remains a contentious cultural and social issue in Nigeria, where reproductive competence for women is still entangled with femininity as well as acceptability in society. This study examined the effects of cultural beliefs, societal expectations, and gender in Nigerian (Nollywood) films portraying infertility, with special reference to stigma, psychological distress, and their effects. Results show that the films predominantly portray infertility as a problem of women, with portrayals being strongly influenced by societal expectations regarding motherhood. Female characters are fr

[Genotype-related changes in the reproductive function under social hierarchy in laboratory male mice].

The study was designed to investigate genetic differences in reproductive consequences of social hierarchy using inbred mice strains BALB/cLac, PT and CBA/Lac. Two adult males of different genotypes were housed together for 5 days. Hierarchical status of both partners was determined by asymmetry in agonistic behavior. The number of epididymal sperm and a proportion of abnormal sperm, weights of reproductive organs, serum concentration and testicular content of testosterone, and the testosterone response to introduction of a receptive female were determined. The testosterone measures were signi

[Chemical submission: a literature review].

The aim of this review is to describe the present knowledge about chemical submission. The number of scientific publications on this phenomenon has increased over the last 10 years. Perpetrators choose drugs which act rapidly, produce desinhibition, sedation, and anterograde amnesia during the abuse. Ethanol and benzodiazepines are the most frequently used. A few drugs, including flunitrazepam and gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), have received widespread media coverage. Toxicological investigations on blood, urine or hair samples allow to detect the substance used. Every effort should be made

Intimidation and violence by males in high school athletics.

This study examined verbal intimidation (VI), physical intimidation (PI), and physical violence (PV) in high school athletics, both by program and by sport. Antecedents were identified via principal component analysis; they included contextual setting, attitude, pressure, and coaching. Multiple regression analysis was used to assess relationships between antecedents and VI, PI, and PV. Coaching was the only significant predictor in 9 of 15 regression analyses of overall VI, PI, and PV, and one of two significant predictors in 4 of 6 additional analyses. Coaching was the only significant predic

Higher dominance rank is associated with lower glucocorticoids in wild female baboons: A rank metric comparison.

In vertebrates, glucocorticoid secretion occurs in response to energetic and psychosocial stressors that trigger the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Measuring glucocorticoid concentrations can therefore shed light on the stressors associated with different social and environmental variables, including dominance rank. Using 14,172 fecal samples from 237 wild female baboons, we test the hypothesis that high-ranking females experience fewer psychosocial and/or energetic stressors than lower-ranking females. We predicted that high-ranking females would have lower fecal glucocorticoid (f

Social subordinance in wild baboons is associated with suppressed high density lipoprotein-cholesterol concentrations: the possible role of chronic social stress.

Atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease are promoted by elevated serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and are retarded by increased high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Considerable variability in these lipoproteins has been observed in studies of captive animals subjected to extensive experimental manipulations, or by epidemiological studies of human beings. We have examined these variables in wild male baboons living undisturbed in their natural habitat in the Serengeti Ecosystem of East Africa. Among socially subordinate males, HDL-C and apolipoprotein A-I concentra

The interaction between social hierarchy and depression/anxiety: Involvement of glutamatergic pyramidal neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC).

Social hierarchy greatly impacts physical and mental health, but the relationship between social hierarchy and depression/anxiety and the underlying neural mechanism remain unclear. The present study used the tube test to determine the social hierarchy status of mice and then performed several behavioral tests to evaluate depression-like and anxiety-like behaviors. Electrophysiological techniques were used to record the firing activities of glutamatergic pyramidal neurons and local field potentials in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). The results suggested that the mice in each cage (4 per

PET imaging of kappa opioid receptors and receptor expression quantified in neuron-derived extracellular vesicles in socially housed female and male cynomolgus macaques.

Recent positron emission tomography (PET) studies of kappa opioid receptors (KOR) in humans reported significant relationships between KOR availability and social status, as well as cocaine choice. In monkey models, social status influences physiology, receptor pharmacology and behavior; these variables have been associated vulnerability to cocaine abuse. The present study utilized PET imaging to examine KOR availability in socially housed, cocaine-naïve female and male monkeys, and peripheral measures of KORs with neuron-derived extracellular vesicles (NDE). KOR availability was assessed in d

Puncture and drainage of the subordinate follicles at timed artificial insemination prevents the risk of twin pregnancy in dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to determine whether fluid drainage from the subordinate follicles by ovum pickup procedures prevents the risk of twin pregnancy without reducing the fertility of the cow. Lactating dairy cows with at least two follicles over 12 mm diameter located one on each ovary and selected from synchronized groups for fixed-time insemination were assigned to a Control (n = 49) or Drainage (n = 49) group. The largest follicle was considered as the dominant follicle. Draining of all subordinate follicles (≥10 mm) was performed in the Drainage group. All drained follicles dev

cAMP signaling mediates behavioral flexibility and consolidation of social status in Drosophila aggression.

Social rituals, such as male-male aggression in Drosophila, are often stereotyped and the component behavioral patterns modular. The likelihood of transition from one behavioral pattern to another is malleable by experience and confers flexibility to the behavioral repertoire. Experience-dependent modification of innate aggressive behavior in flies alters fighting strategies during fights and establishes dominant-subordinate relationships. Dominance hierarchies resulting from agonistic encounters are consolidated to longer-lasting, social-status-dependent behavioral modifications, resulting in
