Effect of drama training on self-esteem and personality strengths: A feasibility case control study of nidotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Although there are many case reports and qualitative studies on the likely positive effects of drama on mental health there have been few quantitative studies with mentally ill patients. AIMS: To assess the effect of drama training in patients receiving nidotherapy with a range of mental and personality disorders on changes in self-esteem and personality strengths over a 1-month period compared with two control groups, one with similar mental disorders and another without, who had similar assessments but no acting involvement. METHOD: A total of 19 patients were recruited from a

Effects of a combined physical activity and educational drama intervention on core symptoms and physical fitness in children with ASD.

This pilot study evaluated the effects of a 12-week combined physical activity and educational drama intervention on core symptoms and physical fitness in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Twenty children were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 10), receiving the combined intervention, or a control group (n = 10), receiving conventional physical activity. Outcomes were assessed using the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R), Social Responsiveness Scale-2 (SRS-2), and a physical fitness test battery. The results indicated that both interventions significantly improved re

Curriculum Innovation: The Impact and Benefits of Cross-Disciplinary Educational Collaboration Between a Department of Neurology and Department of Drama.

INTRODUCTION AND PROBLEM STATEMENT: Simulation-based education is increasingly used in neurology training. Incorporating drama students as simulated patients and family members is a feasible approach to high-fidelity simulation, but formal evaluations and longitudinal outcomes of cross-disciplinary educational collaborations are limited. To address this gap, our neurology and drama departments jointly developed a simulation curriculum and assessment of its impact on educational outcomes of residents, and healthcare perception and performance skills of drama students. OBJECTIVES: Objectives of

The Role of Exposure to Depictions of Bystander Intervention on Crime Dramas and Reality Dating Television on Bystander Intervention Behavior.

Sexual violence is a rampant problem on college campuses. One of the most popular ways to curb this issue in universities is bystander intervention training. Bystander intervention behavior involves identifying a problem and acting as a third party to de-escalate a situation. In this study, we explore how media can play a role in bystander intervention behavior, specifically where sex-related situations involving alcohol. The literature suggests that both crime dramas and reality dating television shows can influence sex- and relationship-related behaviors and attitudes. Based on that, we inve

How teacher support, peer connection, and embodied meaning-making interact in drama-based social-emotional learning in higher education.

Drama-based social-emotional learning has gained increasing attention in higher education, yet participation in embodied activities does not in itself ensure sustained engagement or social-emotional development. Less is known about how teacher support, peer interaction, and embodied participation become interconnected in classroom practice, or about the conditions under which this process may be disrupted. This multisite interpretive qualitative study was conducted across four universities in eastern China. Data were generated through interviews with 24 students and eight teaching staff, suppl

Review of type 3 macular neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration: no DRAMA (Deep Retinal Age-related Microvascular Anomalies).

Type 3 macular neovascularization (MNV) is a unique form of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) that presents distinct pathogenetic features, clinical manifestations, and prognostic considerations when compared to types 1 and 2 MNV. Insights gained from clinicopathological correlations, bridging in vivo examination techniques with ex vivo histological analysis, have significantly enhanced our comprehension of this MNV phenotype, shaped current management strategies and influenced future directions for therapeutics. The particularities of type 3 MNV, which may largely stem from i

Comparison of nutritional and hydration status in patients undergoing twice and thrice-weekly hemodialysis: a silent drama in developing countries.

PURPOSE: In low and middle- income countries, due to lack of financial resources, the number of patients receiving one or two hemodialysis (HD) sessions a week has increased, leading to a large number of complications. Protein-energy wasting (PEW) and overhydration (OH) are common complications; nevertheless, the evidence regarding the nutritional status of patients receiving 2 and 3 weekly dialysis sessions is scarce. Thus, our objective was to compare the nutritional and hydration status of patients with two and three HD sessions. Secondarily, we aimed to compare hospitalizations, infectious

Stop the drama Downunder: a social marketing campaign increases HIV/sexually transmitted infection knowledge and testing in Australian gay men.

INTRODUCTION: Since 2000, notifications of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have increased significantly in Australian gay men. We evaluated the impact of a social marketing campaign in 2008-2009 aimed to increase health-seeking behavior and STI testing and enhance HIV/STI knowledge in gay men. METHODS: A convenience sample of 295 gay men (18-66 years of age) was surveyed to evaluate the effectiveness of the campaign. Participants were asked about campaign awareness, HIV/STI knowledge, health-seeking behavior, and HIV/STI testing. We examined associations between recent ST

Effectiveness of drama and music therapies as health communication interventions for reducing anxiety and posttraumatic disorders among children-victims of flood.

This study examined the usefulness of drama and music therapies as communication strategies for reducing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) among school children (aged 10-16) who were victims of the 2022 floods in Nigeria. The researchers randomly assigned the children to control (n = 122) drama therapy (n = 120) and music therapy (n = 120) groups. The result of the study revealed that after the intervention, school children in the drama and music therapies (unlike those in the control group) reported a significant reduction in their PTSD a

I'm Great! I'm no good….: A case illustration of drama therapeutic work with a male offender of domestic violence in a forensic outpatient setting.

Treating perpetrators of aggressive behavior, like verbal aggression, intimidation, and bullying behavior resulting in aggressive incidents with others, is difficult. This group is often diagnosed with personality disorders and when legal measures applied, they are more often treated in a forensic setting for their problems. This article presents the case of a 54-year-old man, diagnosed with Borderline personality disorder, narcissistic and antisocial traits, mild depressive symptoms, and loss and grief, who has voluntarily had treatment in a forensic outpatient center to reduce aggression and

"Arbitrary Factors": A Hospice Chaplain's Reflection on Deeply Human Dramas Among Healthcare Chaplains and Within their Organizations During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Various "arbitrary factors" shaped healthcare chaplains' experiences during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. The author's reflection provides personal recollection, uniquely situated in the particular local organizational dynamics and inter-personal relationships among the professionals, supplementing the qualitative survey articles by the field's on-going effort to collect, organize, and interpret the pandemic's impact on the spiritual care practitioners.

Effect of diet video-drama and telephone messages on improving parental knowledge and diet diversity of malnourished children in Kenya: A randomised controlled trial.

Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) accounts for 1 million deaths globally each year. Ready-to-use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), recommended for treatment, is often replaced with low-nutrient home foods. We sought to determine the effect of enhanced caregiver counselling, using a dramatized video with contextualized demonstrations of local high-nutrient food (video-drama) and telephone messages on high-nutrient foods (SMS), on children's dietary diversity scores (DDS), weight gain, and caregiver knowledge. This randomised trial enrolled 213 severely malnourished children and caregivers at Mbagathi Hosp

"Shut down and restart": immersion in rebirth micro-dramas and narrative career disruption among Chinese university students-an interpretative phenomenological analysis.

Rebirth micro-dramas have become a popular form of short-form entertainment in China. In these stories, a protagonist dies or is betrayed, returns to an earlier life stage with memories of the future, avoids previous mistakes, and quickly achieves success. For university students approaching graduation, this narrative may be especially attractive because it offers what real career development cannot: certainty, reversibility, and foreknowledge. Real career choices are slow, uncertain, and irreversible, and students must continue investing effort without knowing whether their decisions will lea

Debunking highly prevalent health misinformation using audio dramas delivered by WhatsApp: evidence from a randomised controlled trial in Sierra Leone.

INTRODUCTION: Infectious disease misinformation is widespread and poses challenges to disease control. There is limited evidence on how to effectively counter health misinformation in a community setting, particularly in low-income regions, and unsettled scientific debate about whether misinformation should be directly discussed and debunked, or implicitly countered by providing scientifically correct information. METHODS: The Contagious Misinformation Trial developed and tested interventions designed to counter highly prevalent infectious disease misinformation in Sierra Leone, namely the be

Finding the right words: preparing medical students for communication on the wish for hastened death - medical students' perceptions of drama-based and online communication training.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, assisted suicide is legal, placing ethical and communicative demands on physicians. Medical students (MS), however, often feel inadequately prepared for such conversations. This study explores how MS perceive two teaching formats designed to support communication skills in such a context. METHODS: As part of the Erasmus+-funded ELPIS project (E-Learning on Palliative Care for International Students), in 2023 a drama seminar (DS) and an online tool (OT) were offered to MS of the RWTH Aachen University on a voluntary basis to support communication skills training. For ev

How do AI micro-dramas lead to addictive use among older adults? A chain mediation model of escapism motivation and flow experience.

Generative AI is deeply involved in the production and recommendation distribution of micro-short dramas, allowing older adult users to face a higher risk of out-of-control use while obtaining emotional compensation and immersive experience. This study mainly examines how three types of characteristics of AI micro-drama content (emotional realism, narrative involvement, and algorithmic personalization) affect the addictive use of older adults, and examines the chain mediation model between escapism motivation and flow experience. A total of 658 valid samples were obtained by questionnaire surv

Development of a Video-Delivered Serial Drama Designed to Reduce Community Homophobia and HIV Stigma, Decrease Sexual Risk Behavior, and Increase HIV Testing Among Black Youth.

This article describes the development of a video serial drama intervention that was designed to address factors that influence HIV in the United States among Black youth. These include HIV testing, sexual behaviors not protected by condoms, negative attitudes towards sexual minorities, and HIV stigma. Behavior-change principles (social learning theory and education-entertainment) and input from members of the priority audience formed the basis of this 27-episode (3 minutes each) drama for dissemination on multiple platforms, including in public spaces or privately online. The long-term and spillover effects of a radio drama on HIV knowledge, expressed stigma, willingness to disclose, and political priorities: Evidence from a cluster-randomized trial in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Entertainment-education can influence public health knowledge and attitudes, but evidence on persistence and spillovers is limited. METHODS: We conducted a placebo-controlled, cluster-randomized trial in 30 villages in rural Tanzania. Within 15 matched ward pairs, we randomly assigned villages to a community screening of a radio drama modeling HIV disclosure and obtaining treatment or to a screening of an unrelated drama. Of 1205 respondents enrolled at baseline, 87% attended the screening and 97% completed the endline survey. Participants and enumerators were blinded to assignmen
