Making decisions one drink at a time and the "just one drink" effect: A fuzzy-trace theory model of harmful drinking.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the decision factors that drive harmful alcohol use among young adults is of practical and theoretical importance. We apply fuzzy-trace theory (FTT) to investigate a potential danger that may arise from the arguably correct notion that a single drink carries no meaningful risk. Decisions that are mentally represented as one drink at a time could contribute to excessive drinking. METHODS: College students (N = 351) made a series of decisions to take or decline eight hypothetical drinks presented one at a time. Outcome measures included each decision, recent alcohol co

Daily Drinking Behaviors and the Influence of Rumination, Impulsivity, and Social Drinking Contexts.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity may mediate the effect of rumination on daily drinking behaviors via a negative emotional cascade, though few studies have examined temporal associations of rumination and impulsivity leading to drinking within the day. Social drinking contexts may also influence the negative emotional cascade, with social and solitary conditions potentially moderating these associations. METHODS: This study used multilevel structural equation modeling (MSEM) to examine the mediating effect of impulsivity between rumination and drinking behaviors at the within- and between-person level

Indirect effects of personality on high-intensity drinking: The role of drinking motives.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have long been interested in identifying risk factors for binge drinking behavior (4+/5+ drinks/occasion for females/males), but many studies have demonstrated that a substantial proportion of young adults are drinking at levels far beyond (often 2 to 3 times) the standard binge threshold. The consumption of such large quantities of alcohol, typically referred to as high-intensity drinking (HID), can cause severe alcohol-related problems, such as blackouts, unintended sexual experiences, and death. This study is the first to investigate whether personality is indirectly

Opportunities for reducing college drinking: The roles of drinking attitudes and blackout experience.

BACKGROUND: As many as 35% of college students report having been drunk in the past month, and greater alcohol use and alcohol-related problems are associated with a positive attitude toward heavy drinking. One serious consequence of heavy drinking is alcohol-induced blackout. When they occur, alcohol-induced blackouts present a unique opportunity to increase motivation to change drinking. However, it is unclear under what conditions an alcohol-related heavy drinking attitude and experiencing a blackout represent an opportunity to change and how experiencing a blackout(s) influences an individ

Drinking motives as mediators of social anxiety and hazardous drinking among college students.

Although social anxiety (SA) and alcohol use disorders commonly co-occur, the relationship between these variables in college populations has been inconsistent. The present study tested the hypothesized model that negatively reinforcing, but not positively reinforcing, drinking motives (or reasons for drinking) would mediate the association between SA and three aspects of hazardous drinking (quantity/frequency, consequences, and dependence symptoms) in an ethnically diverse sample of college drinkers (N = 817; mean age = 19.9 years, range = 18-29). Structural equation modeling (SEM) results us

Drinking patterns and drinking problems in 1984: results from a general population survey.

Findings on alcohol consumption and alcohol problems from a 1984 general population survey are presented and compared to previous survey findings. Eighteen percent of all men and 5% of all women were classified as frequent heavy drinkers; 6% of all men drinkers and 2% of all women drinkers reported that they got "drunk" as often as once per week or more. A system for measuring drinking problems, based largely on the work of Cahalan and Room, is presented and explained. As when interpreting any system of measuring drinking problems in a general population survey, readers must be aware that the

Moderate drinking or abstinence? Exploring the association of drinking status with multimorbidity in China.

AIM: To investigate the association between drinking patterns and multimorbidity in Chinese adults. METHODS: In this 2022 nationwide cross-sectional study of 30,505 participants from 31 provinces, drinking status was categorized as: nondrinkers (never consumed alcohol), constant drinkers (individuals with regular uninterrupted use), current drinkers (individuals with recently initiated), and ex-drinkers (with no alcohol consumption in the past 12 months). Multimorbidity was defined as ≥2 concurrent chronic conditions. Associations were assessed using binary and multinomial logistic regression

Early developmental processes and the continuity of risk for underage drinking and problem drinking.

Developmental pathways to underage drinking emerge before the second decade of life. Many scientists, however, as well as the general public, continue to focus on proximal influences surrounding the initiation of drinking in adolescence, such as social, behavioral, and genetic variables related to availability and ease of acquisition of the drug, social reinforcement for its use, and individual differences in drug responses. In the past 20 years, a considerable body of evidence has accumulated on the early (often much earlier than the time of the first drink) predictors and pathways of youthfu

The impact of maternal drinking during and after pregnancy on the drinking of adolescent offspring.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of prenatal maternal drinking on alcohol consumption in adolescent offspring was examined among boys and girls separately. METHOD: A prospective longitudinal sample of 185 mother-firstborn child dyads was used to examine the impact of maternal self-reported alcohol consumption during pregnancy on adolescent self-reported lifetime and current drinking, controlling for potential confounding factors. RESULTS: In this representative general population sample, maternal drinking during pregnancy, particularly continuous moderate to heavy consumption, had a significant positiv

Longitudinal effects of age at onset and first drinking situations on problem drinking.

The purpose of this study was to describe aspects of the first alcohol-use experience, and examine the predictive relations among age of first use, context of alcohol use initiation, and problem drinking with and without controls for psychosocial risk factors. Data were from the Rutgers Health and Human Development Project, a five-wave, prospective study of substance-use behaviors in a community sample. Respondents, who were first interviewed at age 12 (1979-81) and most recently at age 30 or 31 (1999-2000) (N=371), reported on their first drinking experience, and on a range of known risk fact

Offspring of parents with drinking problems: drinking and drug-taking as young adults.

One hundred and seventy 16 to 35 year-old offspring of parents with drinking problems and 80 comparison young adults were recruited from a variety of clinical and community sources. Each was interviewed at length using a semi-structured interview and 86% were re-interviewed one year later. No between-group differences were found in current quantity of alcohol consumption nor in percentages who had ever used or were currently using illicit or prescribed drugs. However, larger numbers of offspring had commenced alcohol use in their early teens and had used other drugs in their later teens, and m

Commentary: if you drink alcohol, drink sensibly: is this guideline still appropriate?

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol abuse remains one of the most serious substance abuse disorders in South African society, resulting in inordinately large social, economic and health problems at all levels of society. Alcohol consumers in South Africa are estimated to drink 16.6L per annum with a per capita consumption of 7.1L. South Africa has one of the highest rates of death attributable to crime, violence, traffic accidents, and HIV/AIDS in the world. These rates have been directly related to the high prevalence of alcohol abuse and risky drinking patterns. A food-based dietary guideline that encourages

Pre-pregnancy drinking: how drink size affects risk assessment.

AIMS: We considered the role of drink size in determining average daily consumption among groups at risk for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. DESIGN: In-person hour-long interviews gathered cross-sectional retrospective data about drinking before an index pregnancy. SETTING: Subjects were recruited at public clinics in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area. To reach those not necessarily seeking prenatal care, community outreach in the same urban areas was undertaken. PARTICIPANTS: Three hundred and twenty-one pregnant women were interviewed: 102 Native Americans, 185 African Americans, and 34

Drinking locations of drink-drivers: a comparative analysis of accident and nonaccident cases.

This study utilizes data collected by the Perth (Australia) Traffic Police on the last drinking location of persons arrested for drink-driving either as a consequence of their being involved in a road traffic accident or as a result of failing a roadside breath test. A comparison of these data has found that significantly more persons involved in traffic accidents had been drinking at unlicensed locations, that is at private residences or in public places such as parks, than at licensed premises. It was also found that accident cases were more likely to involve males under 25 years; for those

Development of low erosive carbonated fruit drinks 2. Evaluation of an experimental carbonated blackcurrant drink compared to a conventional carbonated drink.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies demonstrated that a non-carbonated blackcurrant juice drink with added calcium produced little erosion of enamel in vitro and in situ by comparison with other low pH fruit drinks. The aim of this study is to evaluate the erosive effects in situ of an experimental formulation carbonated drink with added calcium, compared to a conventional carbonated drink over a 20 day period using a similar design as in previous studies. METHOD: The study was a single centre, single blind, randomised placebo controlled three cell crossover design involving 15 volunteers. The test d

Stress and the urge to drink.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding why people drink alcohol is important for the health and safety of individuals and the public. The aim of this study was to examine from a cognitive point of view the hypothesized link between drinking and stress. METHODS: 25 scenarios were constructed by combining two items, either two life-change events or a social situation and an emotional state. In the initial three experiments, 159 male and 43 female alcoholics and 157 male and 93 female nonalcoholics in France judged the degree to which these scenarios were stressful and subsequently the degree to which they st

Baseline trajectories of heavy drinking and their effects on postrandomization drinking in the COMBINE Study: empirically derived predictors of drinking outcomes during treatment.

The Combined Pharmacotherapies and Behavioral Interventions (COMBINE) Study sought to answer questions about the benefits of combining behavioral and pharmacological interventions (naltrexone and acamprosate) in alcohol-dependent patients. Our goals were to identify trajectories of heavy drinking before randomization in COMBINE, to characterize patients in these trajectories, and to assess whether prerandomization trajectories predict drinking outcomes. We analyzed daily indicators of heavy drinking 90 days before randomization using a trajectory-based approach. Each patient was assigned to th

Alcohol-attributable injuries in admissions to a swiss emergency room--an analysis of the link between volume of drinking, drinking patterns, and preattendance drinking.

BACKGROUND: An association between alcohol consumption and injury is clearly established from volume of drinking, heavy episodic drinking (HED), and consumption before injury. Little is known, however, about how their interaction raises risk of injury and what combination of factors carries the highest risk. This study explores which of 11 specified groups of drinkers (a) are at high risk and (b) contribute most to alcohol-attributable injuries. METHODS: In all, 8,736 patients, of whom 5,077 were injured, admitted to the surgical ward of the emergency department of Lausanne University Hospita

Hemodynamics and Drinking in the Giraffe.

BACKGROUND: The circulation of 4-6 m tall giraffes is markedly affected by gravity. To ensure cerebral perfusion, upright giraffes generate a blood pressure in excess of 200 mmHg. Before drinking, the head is lowered by 3-5 m, providing exceptional hemodynamic challenges. Here, we provide quantitative hemodynamic measures during head movement and drinking. METHODS: We measured carotid pressure, jugular pressure, heart rate, and blood flow in awake giraffes, along with circulating blood volume and cerebrospinal fluid pressure in anesthetized giraffes. We also analyzed the contractility and inn
