Exposure levels to brominated compounds in seawater swimming pools treated with chlorine.

Despite evidence of formation of brominated compounds in seawater swimming pools treated with chlorine, no data about exposure levels to these compounds have been reported. To address this issue, a survey has been carried out in four establishments (representing 8 pools) fed with seawater and devoted to relaxing and cure treatments (thalassotherapy centres located in Southeast of France). Carcinogenic and mutagenic brominated disinfection byproducts (trihalomethanes -THM- and halogenated acetic acids -HAA-) were quantified at varying levels, statistically related to organic loadings brought by

Levels of drunkenness of customers leaving licensed premises in Perth, Western Australia: a comparison of high and low 'risk' premises.

A measure of the risk of licensed premises having customers involved in road traffic accidents and drink-driving offences was utilised in order to identify seven 'High Risk' and eight 'Low Risk' premises in metropolitan Perth, Western Australia. This measure, or 'Risk Ratio', was defined as the ratio of incidents of alcohol-related harm to an estimate of on-premises alcohol sales for a particular establishment. A study was conducted to test the hypothesis that a High Risk status would be associated with greater levels of customer intoxication. Interviews concerning drinking behaviour and breat

Bringing it home: community survey of HIV risks to primary sex partners of men and women in alcohol-serving establishments in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Concurrent sexual relationships facilitate the spread of HIV infection, and sex with non-primary partners may pose particularly high risks for HIV transmission to primary partners. OBJECTIVE: We examined the sexual and alcohol-related risks associated with sex partners outside of primary relationships among South African men and women in informal drinking establishments. METHODS: Men (n=4959) and women (n=2367) with primary sex partners residing in a Xhosa-speaking South African township completed anonymous surveys. Logistic regressions tested associations between having outside

HIV Prevalence, Virological Suppression, and Consistent Condom Use Among Social Venue-Going Men in Zimbabwe: Insights from the 2022 Priorities for Local AIDS Control Efforts (PLACE) Surveys.

Men attending social venues face barriers to accessing HIV prevention and care services. These venues-such as bars, guesthouses, nightclubs, and transport hubs-facilitate new sexual partnerships but lack cohesive social networks, making it challenging to design and implement effective HIV prevention strategies. Men who attend social venues are more likely to pay for sex, potentially increasing their risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV. However, data on how HIV-related behaviours and service engagement differ between men who do and do not pay for sex among those attending venues remain limite

Outreach mpox vaccination at sex-on-premises venues in Sydney: an audit of a collaborative intervention by public health nurses and LGBTQI+ peer workers.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: In 2024, in response to a re-surge in mpox transmission in New South Wales, Australia, Kirketon Road Centre (KRC) partnered with an HIV and LGBTQI+ community organisation, ACON, to conduct outreach vaccination in two sex-on-premises venues (SOPVs), also known as "saunas". SOPV attendees were approached by an ACON peer worker who offered health education and referral to on-site mpox vaccination (Jynneos®) by a registered nurse. We aim to describe the scope, the acceptability, and the outcomes of mpox vaccination outreach at SOPVs in Sydney, and compare characteristics of

Long-term drinking stability in the open-access self-administration monkey model.

The Non-Human Primate (NHP) model for the study of Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD) as developed in our laboratories is critical to our understanding of the pathophysiology of voluntary, chronic, ethanol consumption. Previous work in this model established categories of ethanol consumption that parallel reported categories of human consumption across a spectrum spanning low drinking, binge drinking, heavy drinking, and very heavy drinking, albeit at generally higher daily intakes across categories than documented in people. Original categories assigned to ethanol consumption patterns were establish

Seek, Test and Disclose: knowledge of HIV testing and serostatus among high-risk couples in a South African township.

OBJECTIVES: HIV testing and disclosure of results to partners is an important strategy in HIV prevention but is under-researched within heterosexual partnerships. To address this gap, we describe patterns of HIV testing, discrepancies between beliefs and biologically confirmed HIV status of each partner, and characteristics of mutually correct knowledge of HIV status among heterosexual couples in a high-prevalence community. METHODS: The study recruited 290 high-risk heterosexual couples in stable relationships from a township in Cape Town, South Africa. Male patrons of shebeens (drinking est

Feasibility and acceptability of a bar-based sexual risk reduction intervention for bar patrons in Tshwane, South Africa.

Alcohol consumption is a recognised risk factor for HIV infection. Alcohol serving establishments have been identified as appropriate venues in which to deliver HIV prevention interventions. This paper describes experiences and lessons learnt from implementing a combined HIV prevention intervention in bar settings in one city- and one township-based bar in Tshwane, South Africa. The intervention consisted of peer-led and brief intervention counselling sub-components. Thirty-nine bar patrons were recruited and trained, and delivered HIV and alcohol risk reduction activities to their peers as pe

Assessing sexual motives for drinking alcohol among HIV-positive men who have sex with men.

Individuals who drink alcohol for the explicit motive of facilitating or enhancing sex may be more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior, including having sex under the influence of alcohol. However, efforts to assess sexual motives for drinking (SMDs) have been very limited to date. We examined the psychometric properties of a 5-item measure of SMDs in a sample of HIV-positive heavy drinking men who have sex with men. Findings provided excellent support for the scale's internal consistency and concurrent validity with a well-established measure of sexual alcohol expectancies (SAEs). Good

A comparative study of the effects of three modes of 4-Nitroquinoline N-oxide induction of Sprague Dawley rats in animal models of oral leukoplakia.

Animal models are essential for advancing disease research. However, models for oral leukoplakia (OLK) remain relatively underexplored. This study sought to identify an optimal strategy for establishing a rat OLK model using 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO). The experimental groups included 0.002 % 4NQO drinking, 0.5 % 4NQO painting, and 0.002 % 4NQO drinking combined with 0.5 % 4NQO painting groups. Morphological changes, behavioral status, body weight, water intake and mortality were monitored. Histopathological features of rat tongue lesions were compared with those of human OLK. Drinking co

Cations and anions in drinking water as putative contributory factors to endemic goitre in Plateau State, Nigeria.

The prevalence of endemic goitre in Plateau State, Nigeria was established and an attempt was made to identify some of the possible environmental goitrogenic agents in the region to establish their likely relationship with the goitre endemicity. Iodine deficiency appears to be a major aetiological factor for the disease as indicated by low iodine levels observed in portable drinking water and in daily urinary excretion. The carbonate (CO3-) content of drinking water supply was found to bear a significant positive correlation with the goitre rate for the entire state (p less than 0.005). The ca

Do adolescent delinquency and problem drinking share psychosocial risk factors? A literature review.

Despite the prevalence and damaging effects of adolescent problem drinking, relative to delinquency, far less research has focused on drinking using an integrated theoretical approach. The aim of the current research was to review existing literature on psychosocial risk factors for delinquency and problem drinking, and explore whether integrating elements of social learning theory with an established psychosocial control theory of delinquency could explain adolescent problem drinking. We reviewed 71 studies published post-1990 with particular focus on articles that empirically researched risk

Alcohol Use, Drinking Venue Utilization, and Child Physical Abuse: Results from a Pilot Study.

A positive relationship between parents' drinking and child physical abuse has been established by previous research. This paper examines how a parent's use of drinking locations is related to physical abuse. A convenience sample of 103 parents answered questions on physical abuse with the Conflict Tactics Scale-Parent Child version (CTS-PC), current drinking behavior, and the frequency with which they drank at different venues, including bars and parties. Ordered probit models were used to assess relationships between parent demographics, drinking patterns, places of drinking, and CTS-PC scor

Prevalence and predictors of intestinal parasites among food handlers in Yebu Town, southwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: As a result of urbanization, eating and drinking from food service establishments is becoming a common practice in developing countries like Ethiopia, which increases the chances of food borne diseases. The health status and hygiene practices of food handlers are the major determinants of food contamination. In developing countries where there are poor regulatory systems for food hygiene, food handlers are often appointed without screening for possible infections associated with poor hygiene like intestinal parasites. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at determining the prevalence and p

Occurrence of antibiotics in rural drinking water and related human health risk assessment.

Antibiotic residues in drinking water can have a negative impact on both human and environmental health. However, drinking water purification processes employed in rural areas are often less complicated than those used in urban areas. The occurrence of antibiotic residues in rural drinking water and their potential effects on residents' health remains to be established. In this study, we measured antibiotic levels in rural drinking water using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), and evaluated the associated health risks based on Chinese population expo

In vitro simulation of drinking events in cattle.

Drinking causes a rapid decline in reticulorumen temperature (RT) followed by an exponential recovery, which may potentially impact the reticulorumen ecosystem. However, the nexus between drinking events and their effects on ruminal fermentation and microbial diversity has not yet been studied, either in vitro or in vivo. Although artificial (in vitro) rumen systems are widely used in ruminant research to simulate the reticulorumen environment, no such simulation has been described to consider the impact of drinking events on the reticulorumen environment. Therefore, we have developed a method

When weight-loss drugs reduce drinking: glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists as phenotype-enriched harm-reduction therapy for alcohol use disorder.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have attracted interest as potential treatments for alcohol use disorder (AUD) after patients receiving these agents for obesity or type 2 diabetes reported a reduced desire to drink. This editorial examines whether current evidence supports their classification as broadly applicable addiction treatments or as phenotype-enriched therapies. Randomized trials evaluating exenatide and semaglutide suggest a clinically relevant but endpoint-selective signal. Reductions have been most consistent in heavy-drinking days, drinks per drinking day, na

Rapid nongenomic estrogen signaling controls alcohol drinking behavior in mice.

Ovarian-derived estrogen can signal non-canonically at membrane-associated receptors in the brain to rapidly regulate neuronal function. Early alcohol drinking confers greater risk for alcohol use disorder in women than men, and binge alcohol drinking is correlated with high estrogen levels, but a causal role for estrogen in driving alcohol drinking has not been established. We found that female mice displayed greater binge alcohol drinking and reduced avoidance when estrogen was high during the estrous cycle than when it was low. The pro-drinking, but not anxiolytic, effect of high endogenous

Heavy drinking relates to positive valence ratings of alcohol cues.

A positive family history of alcohol use disorders (FH) is a robust predictor of personal alcohol abuse and dependence. Exposure to problem-drinking models is one mechanism through which family history influences alcohol-related cognitions and drinking patterns. Similarly, exposure to alcohol advertisements is associated with alcohol involvement and the relationship between affective response to alcohol cues and drinking behavior has not been well established. In addition, the collective contribution that FH, exposure to different types of problem-drinking models (e.g. parents, peers) and pers

Alcohol binge drinking in early pregnancy and the effect on fetal growth: a cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol binge drinking is common in early pregnancy and is a well-established risk factor for subsequent child health. Yet, very few studies have investigated the effect on fetal growth. Furthermore, it has been speculated that the timing of binge drinking may be a determining factor for neonatal growth. The objective of this study was to assess the potential effect of binge drinking and different drinking patterns (timing and number of binge drinking episodes) in early pregnancy on fetal growth estimated by birthweight and birth length. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 1 March to 31
