Festival testing: A survey of suspected drugs seized from New Zealand music festivals, December 2018 to March 2019.

Music festivals and other recreational events are common settings for illicit drug use with the intention of socialising, relaxing and creating a memorable experience. The use of stimulants is commonly reported at music festivals, with a general preference for MDMA, cocaine, cathinones and LSD. The results from this survey of drugs seized at New Zealand music festivals show a similar trend, with MDMA accounting for two-thirds of the 305 samples seized. The second most popular drug in this survey was cannabis plant material, which is not generally noted as being a common festival drug but refle

Barriers to family planning services among patients in drug treatment programs.

In July 1989, family planning services were integrated into 13 drug treatment programs in Philadelphia. To obtain information on the family planning needs of women in drug treatment programs, baseline interviews were conducted with 599 women. Three-quarters of these women had had a sexually transmitted disease, and although they were in a drug treatment program, 41 percent had injected drugs in the previous month. In addition, 62 percent of the women who were sexually active in the previous month had not used a contraceptive. Twelve months into the program, seven focus groups were conducted wi

Substance abuse treatment as HIV prevention: more questions than answers.

This report examines associations between the availability of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related health services in substance abuse treatment programs and characteristics of the programs and the patients they serve. In a cross-sectional, descriptive design and via a validated survey, program administrators within the National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network provided information on program characteristics, patient characteristics (rates of risky sexual and drug behaviors and HIV infection), and the availability of 31 different HIV-related health services. Of 319 programs, 8

Long term effectiveness on prescribing of two multifaceted educational interventions: results of two large scale randomized cluster trials.

INTRODUCTION: Information on benefits and risks of drugs is a key element affecting doctors' prescribing decisions. Outreach visits promoting independent information have proved moderately effective in changing prescribing behaviours. OBJECTIVES: Testing the short and long-term effectiveness on general practitioners' prescribing of small groups meetings led by pharmacists. METHODS: Two cluster open randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were carried out in a large scale NHS setting. Ad hoc prepared evidence based material were used considering a therapeutic area approach--TEA, with information

Assessing service and treatment needs and barriers of youth who use illicit and non-medical prescription drugs in Northern Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Illicit drug use rates are high among Canadian youth, and are particularly pronounced in Northern Ontario. The availability and accessibility of effective substance use-related treatments and services are required to address this problem, especially among rural and remote Northern communities. In order to assess specific service and treatment needs, as well as barriers and deterrents to accessing and utilizing services and treatments for youth who use illicit drugs in Northern Ontario, we conducted the present study. METHODS: This study utilized a mixed-methods design and incorpor

"That would be such a game changer": A qualitative study of the acceptability and feasibility of a digital harm reduction support tool among people who use drugs.

INTRODUCTION: People who use drugs (PWUD) in the U.S. are often unable to effectively access social services and medical treatment including harm reduction services. A digital harm reduction support tool (DHRST) that would identify a client's needs and match them to existing community services, is a potential strategy for reducing harms and optimizing access to preferred available services. We examined the feasibility and acceptability of a DHRST among PWUD and its potential for facilitating safer drug use practices and increasing engagement with social and medical services. METHODS: We recru

Getting closer to people: family planning provision by drug shops in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Private-sector drug shops are often the first point of health care in sub-Saharan Africa. Training and supporting drug shop and pharmacy staff to provide a wide range of contraceptive methods and information is a promising high-impact practice for which more information is needed to fully document implementation experience and impact. METHODS: Between September 2010 and March 2011, we trained 139 drug shop operators (DSOs) in 4 districts of Uganda to safely administer intramuscular DMPA (depot medroxyprogesterone acetate) contraceptive injections. In 2012, we approached 54 of thes

[Brief review of documents with data on the toxicity and hazards of chemical substances developed in various countries].

Nowadays various information documents on toxicity and danger of chemical substances exist, i. e., toxicologic certificates, data profiles, trade certificates, etc. An attempt has been made to analyze 15 available data lists used in various countries for the description of noxious and hazardous characteristics of chemicals. The indices on toxicity and danger of chemicals enumerated in the lists are grouped by 9 main categories. The degree of detailed description of the data presented is determined by the aim of the document. The results thus obtained can be used in the further work aimed at th

Online searching of the pharmaceutical literature.

Online databases that cover pharmaceutical topics are described and then illustrated with four sample searches. The online databases useful for searching pharmaceutical topics can be grouped into three categories: (1) databases devoted exclusively to drugs and the pharmacy profession, such as International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, Pharmaceutical News Index, and Ringdoc; (2) databases covering the clinical medicine literature, such as MEDLINE and its related files and Excerpta Medica; and (3) other scientific databases that include coverage of the pharmaceutical literature, such as BIOSIS Prev

Anesthesia considerations for patients with narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy is a derangement of the normal sleep-wakefulness rhythms. Originally, narcolepsy was thought to be a form of epilepsy; however, with the development and subsequent refinement of the electroencephalograph, this notion is no longer accepted. The disorder is characterized by inappropriate intrusions of rapid eye movement sleep into the wakeful state and multiple disruptions of the sleep cycles. Narcolepsy usually has its onset anytime between the ages of 10 years and 50 years, with the greatest majority of patients first reporting noticeable symptoms between the ages of 15 and 35 years

[Statutory pediatric informations available for anticancer drugs: inventory and proposals].

UNLABELLED: Paediatric medicines are often prescribed off label because appropriate clinical and pharmacological studies have not been conducted in children. A European directive is being written to promote the development of paediatric medicines through incentives to pharmaceutical companies, as is already the case in the US. METHOD: In order to evaluate the status of anticancer drugs, we analyzed the paediatric information available in the Vidal 2000 dictionary for cytotoxic chemotherapy. RESULTS: Among the 76 products, 48 were currently used to treat children with cancer. An indication fo

Addressing drug-drug and drug-food interactions through personalized empowerment services for healthcare.

Personalized healthcare systems support the provision of timely and appropriate information regarding healthcare options and treatment alternatives. Especially for patients that receive multi-drug treatments a key issue is the minimization of the risk of adverse effects due to drug-drug interactions (DDIs). DDIs may be the result of doctor prescribed drugs but also due to self-medication of conventional drugs, alternative medicines, food habits, alcohol or smoking. It is therefore crucial for personalized health systems, apart from assisting physicians for optimal prescription practices, to al

Sweeteners, flavorings, and dyes in antibiotic preparations.

Even though a variety of adverse effects caused by sweeteners, flavorings, and dyes in susceptible individuals have been reported, there is no good single reference with information about these substances in pediatric antimicrobials. Data on sweeteners, flavorings, and dyes in 91 antimicrobial preparations were collected. Sucrose was present in 74 (85%) of 87 preparations, followed by saccharin in 30 (34%) preparations. Mannitol, lactose, and sorbitol were each present in 7 preparations. None of the preparations were free of sweeteners. Thirty-four (37%) of 91 preparations did not specify the

What are excipients doing in medicinal products?

Medicinal products contain not only active drugs but also other ingredients included for a variety of purposes and collectively known as excipients (from the Latin word excipere, meaning 'to take out or receive'). Prescribers may wrongly overlook or dismiss excipients on the assumption that these are inactive. In reality, such substances are not always inert and may have risks. Here we consider why excipients are present in medicines, their potential unwanted effects, how they are regulated and where to find out more about them.

Patient-interactive computer system for obtaining medication histories.

A portable, patient-interactive computerized system for obtaining medication histories is described. A comprehensive interview script modeling pharmacist-conducted medication-history interviews was written in lay language. The script contains sections on demographics, current medical conditions, medication regimen, medication compliance, symptoms, allergy history, dietary history, psychosocial history, and occupational and environmental exposure; it also asks the patient to evaluate the system. Some of the information requested is often not obtained by physicians during the history and physica
