A Pilot Study of the Effects of Individualized Home Dual Task Training by Mobile Health Technology in People with Dementia.

The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the effects of dual-task training implemented by mobile health technology on performance on motor and dual-task tests in subjects with dementia. Nineteen subjects with a medical diagnosis of dementia were assigned to an experimental group (EG, n = 12) or control group (CG, n = 7). The EG participated in 24 sessions (3/week) of a homebase dual-task exercises program, in addition to their ongoing cognitive and physiotherapy treatment. The training program was implemented individually in the patient's home by caregivers or relatives through electr

Upper-Extremity Dual-Task Function: An Innovative Method to Assess Cognitive Impairment in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Difficulties in orchestrating simultaneous tasks (i.e., dual-tasking) have been associated with cognitive impairments in older adults. Gait tests have been commonly used as the motor task component for dual-task assessments; however, many older adults have mobility impairments or there is a lack of space in busy clinical settings. We assessed an upper-extremity function (UEF) test as an alternative motor task to study the dual-task motor performance in older adults. METHODS: Older adults (≥65 years) were recruited, and cognitive ability was measured using the Montreal cognitive as

Impact of adding a cognitive task while performing physical fitness tests in women with fibromyalgia: A cross-sectional descriptive study.

Fibromyalgia symptoms cause a significant reduction in the ability to perform daily life activities. These activities often require the ability to perform more than 1 task at the same time. The aim was to investigate how the addition of a cognitive task modifies the performance in physical fitness tests in fibromyalgia and healthy controls.A total of 61 women participated in this study, 31 of them diagnosed with fibromyalgia by a rheumatologist. They performed 3 physical fitness tests (arm curl, handgrip, and 10-steps stair tests) in 2 conditions:The dual task cost was calculated as the differe

Associations between physical function, dual-task performance and cognition in patients with mild Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) causes a gradual decline in cognition, limitations of dual-tasking and physical function leading to total dependence. Hence, information about the interaction between physical function, dual-task performance and cognition may lead to new treatment strategies with the purpose of preserving function and quality of life. The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between physical function, dual-task performance and cognition in community-dwelling patients with mild AD. METHODS: Baseline results from 185 participants (50-90 years old) in th

Rough Auditory Alarms Mitigate Inattentional Deafness During Piloting-Like Task.

ObjectiveTo assess the efficiency of rough auditory alarms in capturing attention during a piloting-like task under high mental workload that may induce inattentional deafness.BackgroundUnder high mental workload and stress, pilots may experience inattentional deafness, leading them to miss critical auditory warnings. This results from early inhibition of the primary auditory cortex by prefrontal areas, shifting auditory processing oscillations from gamma to alpha frequencies. Recent studies suggest that roughness-an auditory perceptual feature of natural alarm signals generated by amplitude-m

The long-term effects of traumatic brain injury on the coordinative function of the central executive.

The objective of this study was to compare the coordinative function of the central executive of working memory in matched groups of controls and persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI) with long-term impairments in functioning, using a dual-task paradigm. The dual-task procedure required participants to complete digit span and tracing tasks separately and then together to produce a change index that reflects loss of productivity on the dual trial. A TBI group and a matched group of controls were compared on this task and on ratings of social competency and neuropsychological tests. The two

Effects of one night of sleep deprivation on single- and dual-task gait.

Sleep deprivation (SDEP) impairs cognitive control, which may affect movements that rely on these processes, such as walking. To test whether gait changes after one night of SDEP reflect reduced cognitive capacity, we compared its effects with those of dual-task walking (i.e. walking while performing a simultaneous cognitive task). We hypothesize that SDEP will produce gait changes similar to those under dual-task conditions. Eighteen healthy adults (nine female, nine male; age, mean (s.d.): 22.2 (2.3) years) were tested the morning after a SDEP and a control night. Participants completed two

Cognitive demands of bipedal locomotion during human foraging.

Human foraging requires cognitive and physical demands that influence each other. These demands include challenges of staying upright while walking bipedally in complex environments, along with other cognitive tasks (e.g. navigation, executive functions). The combination of cognition and movement is known as cognitive-motor dual-tasks, which can result in declines in performance. However, the influence of cognitive-motor dual-tasks has not been observed in ecologically relevant settings. By using a laboratory-based experiment with 45 healthy participants, as well as observations from foraging

Trade-offs between remembering and online evaluation in retrospective evaluation.

This paper examines the trade-off between remembering and online evaluation in retrospective judgments. In two experiments, we compared conditions where participants performed only one task (evaluation or recall) versus both tasks, with task expectancy manipulated through pre-cueing or post-cueing. Participants (N=139 and N=262) viewed sequences of numbers representing monetary values and were asked to either recall the numbers or evaluate the sequence through willingness-to-pay judgments. Results showed that when both tasks were potential (Experiment 1) or actual (Experiment 2) candidates to

The Dynamic Gait Index Does Not Sufficiently Capture the Ability to Adapt Walking Under Dual-Task Conditions.

Walking in daily life requires the performance of multiple tasks simultaneously, such as walking and talking. Thus, dual-task performance is critical in assessments of functional gait and mobility. The Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) is used widely to evaluate walking capacity, but its ability to capture changes in walking function while under cognitive load is unclear. In this study, we examined whether DGI scores are associated with the dual-task cost (DTC) of walking performance in adults (aged 41 [19]) across a spectrum of walking abilities. Participants completed treadmill walking trials under s

Revisiting Dual-Task Paradigms for Listening Effort: Dual-Task Interference in Adults With and Without Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: In light of concerns about the traditional dual-task approach for behavioral listening effort, this study explored a novel dual-task interference (DTI)-based method in adults with and without hearing loss (HL). METHOD: Fifty-two normal-hearing individuals and 52 with HL were matched for age, sex, and education (M age overall = 67.38 years). The dual-task paradigm combined a primary speech understanding task under five listening conditions with a secondary visual memory task. Dual-task effects (DTEs; performance change from baseline to dual-task) were calculated for both tasks. Linear

The Effect of Increased Cognitive Demand on Auditory Processing Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Auditory processing (AP) is commonly regarded as the perceptual processing of auditory information in the central nervous system. However, the degree to which higher level cognitive processes are involved in AP or its disorders is contentious. Furthermore, there is little evidence regarding the effects of nonauditory cognitive processes on the various tests of AP in common clinical usage and thus on clinical diagnoses of auditory processing disorder. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of increased cognitive demand, generated by using a dual-task paradigm, on performance on differen

Dual-Tasking Exacerbates Force and Neural Control Unsteadiness in Older Adults With Sarcopenia.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is associated with impaired physical function. Dual-task conditions, which increase cognitive demand during motor performance, may reveal deficits in neuromuscular control that are not evident during isolated motor tasks. We investigated whether older adults with sarcopenia exhibit poorer force and neural control (i.e., greater force and motor unit inter-spike variability and altered common synaptic input) during single- and dual-task conditions compared with non-sarcopenic controls and masters athletes. METHODS: Sarcopenia was defined using Sarcopenia Definitions and O

Obstacle crossing when dual-tasking in children with and without developmental coordination disorder.

One of the essential motor skills in children’s lives is obstacle crossing. This ability is frequently employed in everyday scenarios, such as stepping over toys or miscellaneous objects on the floor. In a real-life context, the execution of this task is often influenced by concurrent cognitive demands, leading to potential cognitive-motor interference. Its effect could be more apparent in younger children or children with some motor difficulties. Thus, the aim of this study is to assess the obstacle crossing performance and post-obstacle movement under single and dual-task conditions (motor a

Modified Gait Support in Adults Three to Eighteen Months After Concussion.

Concussion is associated with persistent motor control deficits that may not be detected using standard clinical assessments. This study examined differences in average velocity, average step length, and single- and double-support percentages during gait under increasing task demands in individuals with a history of concussion. Sixty participants aged 18 to 35 years were recruited, including 32 individuals with a concussion within the past 3 to 18 months and 28 healthy controls. Gait data were collected using an instrumented pressure-sensitive walkway across four conditions: single-task and du

The role of dual-tasking, mindfulness, and rumination on gait in older adults with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a debilitating condition in older adults that can lead to mobility impairments, disability, and premature death. While older adults with chronic pain demonstrate gait impairments compared to healthy older adults, how gait patterns change following cognitive or psychological tasks remain unclear. RESEARCH QUESTION: How do gait patterns change from usual walking to dual-task walking, following an acute rumination task, and following an acute mindfulness task in older adults with chronic pain? Secondarily, what is the relationship between pain, number of pain medicati

Dual-Task vs. Single-Task Gait Training to Improve Spatiotemporal Gait Parameters in People with Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: People with Parkinson's disease (pwPD) present alterations of spatiotemporal gait parameters that impact walking ability. While preliminary studies suggested that dual-task gait training improves spatiotemporal gait parameters, it remains unclear whether dual-task gait training specifically improves dual-task gait performance compared to single-task gait training. The aim of this review is to assess the effect of dual-task training relative to single-task gait training on specific gait parameters during dual-task tests in pwPD.
