Cytogenetic analysis was carried out in unrelated schizophrenic patients, unrelated controls and patients and family members in multiplex families. The size distribution of chromosome 1 heterochromatic region (1qH, C-band variants) among 21 unrelated schizophrenic patients was different from that found in a group of 46 controls. The patient group had 1qH variants of smaller size than the control group (P < 0.01). Incubation of phytohemagglutinin-treated blood lymphocytes with 5-azacytidine (which causes decondensation and extension of the heterochromatin) led to a lesser degree of heterochroma

Among a small group of Saudi Arabs the Duffy blood group (Fy(a-b-)) was found to be associated with the sickle cell trait more often than could be explained by random gene combination thus supporting the concept that African gene flow brought the sickle cell trait to the Arabian peninsula. Based on recent observations concerning the possible role of Fy(a-b-) as a resistance factor against vivax malaria, it is proposed that the gene combination AS FyFy is likely to be selected in areas where falciparum and vivax infections are endemic and mixed infections occur frequently.

We report on our experiences since 2010 with pregnant women with rare blood types. The lack of compatible blood is a challenge for the anaesthetist whose priority is to prevent and treat anaemia in late pregnancy in order to avoid immunisation after transfusion of incompatible blood. In our hospital, the blood type is checked during the first obstetric consult, which is variable, starting from the fourth month of pregnancy. Rare blood types are most often diagnosed in an advanced stage of pregnancy (30 weeks of gestation: WG) due to the late inscription for obstetrics consult, resulting in eve

INTRODUCTION: Hemolytic reactions are adverse complications associated with red blood cell transfusion. These reactions are associated with clinically important erythrocyte antigens, such as those of Duffy blood Meny (2010). Individuals with the Duffy null phenotype Fy (a-b-) are more likely to develop an alloimmunization reaction, resulting in an incompatibility with all available red blood cell units, thus increasing the risk of complications from their underlying disease Höher et al. (2018). Hence, it is important to determine the prevalence of the Fy (a-b-) phenotype in blood donors in our

Invasion of human erythrocytes by Plasmodium knowlesi requires the Duffy blood group antigen. P. knowlesi merozoites synthesize a 135-kDa polypeptide which binds to the Duffy antigen with receptor-like specificity. In this study, we show that the sulfated polysaccharide fucoidan and the glycosaminoglycan dextran sulfate inhibit the binding of the 135-kDa polypeptide to human Duffy-positive and rhesus erythrocytes while the chondroitin sulfates do not. Fucoidan and dextran sulphate also blocked the in vitro invasion of human Duffy b and rhesus erythrocytes cells by P. knowlesi merozoites. These

The interaction between merozoites of the human pathogen, Plasmodium vivax, and the Duffy blood group glycoprotein on the surface of human erythrocytes is essential for the invasion of erythrocytes and the survival of the parasite. We have identified a P. vivax protein of 135 to 140 kDa which binds with receptor-like specificity to the human Duffy blood group glycoprotein. This interaction can be specifically inhibited by purified Duffy glycoprotein and by pretreating erythrocytes with a monoclonal antibody directed against a novel Duffy determinant. A protein with similar specificity for the

Fya antibodies were detected in 5 Fy(a-b-) black patients during a 5-year period. The Duffy phenotype was confirmed using anti-Fya, anti-Fyb, and anti-Fy3 by an adsorption-elution technique. These 5 patients had sickle cell disease and had received multiple blood transfusions. The antibodies were all found during the investigation of a hemolytic transfusion reaction or failure to achieve the desired red cell increments after transfusion.

A wealth of research focused on African American populations has connected rs2814778-CC ("Duffy-null") to decreased neutrophil (neutropenia) and leukocyte counts (leukopenia). Although it has been proposed that this variant is benign, prior studies have shown that the misinterpretation of Duffy-null-associated neutropenia and leukopenia can lead to unnecessary bone marrow biopsies, inequities in cytotoxic and chemotherapeutic treatment courses, underenrollment in clinical trials, and other disparities. To investigate the phenotypic correlates of Duffy-null status, we conducted a phenome-wide a

The null variant of the Duffy antigen is a non-pathological mutation that is partially protective against Plasmodium vivax and results in a lower absolute neutrophil count (ANC) in peripheral blood without increasing the risk of infection. Healthcare practices, clinical trials eligibility and medication dosing are often influenced by the definition of neutropenia. In many regions, however, neutropenia has been defined by the ANC distribution of Duffy-positive individuals, which may be unsuitable for decision-making in Duffy null individuals. This review describes the association between Duffy

Plasmodium knowlesi, a malaria of Old World monkeys, invades all Duffy blood group positive human erythrocytes and various New World monkey erythrocytes except Cebus apella. We had previously identified a 135 kDa parasite protein in supernatants of P. knowlesi cultures that bound to Duffy positive but not to Duffy negative human erythrocytes [Haynes et al., J. Exp. Med. 167, 1873-1881 (1988)]. We now use New World monkey erythrocytes as a reagent to identify P. knowlesi proteins in culture supernatants that will bind to all New World monkey erythrocytes susceptible to invasion but not to C. ap

A 135-kD parasite protein, a minor component of the Plasmodium knowlesi malaria radiolabeled proteins released into culture supernatant at the time of merozoite release and reinvasion, specifically bound to human erythrocytes that are invaded and carry a Duffy blood group determinant (Fya or Fyb), but did not bind to human erythrocytes that are not invaded and do not carry a Duffy determinant (FyFy). Specific anti-Duffy antibodies blocked the binding of the 135-kD protein to erythrocytes carrying that specific Duffy determinant. Purified 135-kD protein bound specifically to the 35-45-kD Duffy

The Duffy-null phenotype is associated with fewer circulating blood neutrophils. This phenomenon, termed Duffy-null-associated neutrophil count (DANC), is common among individuals of African and Middle Eastern ancestry. Despite growing evidence that DANC does not increase the risk of infectious complications, oncology treatment protocols often rely on standardised absolute neutrophil count (ANC) thresholds to guide chemotherapy dosing and clinical trial candidacy. This reliance risks inappropriate dose reductions or treatment delays in patients with DANC. We present a patient with DANC and hig

The term "benign ethnic neutropenia" describes the phenotype of having an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) <1500 cells/μL with no increased risk of infection. It is most commonly seen in those of African ancestry. In addition, ANC reference ranges from countries in Africa emphasize that ANC levels <1500 cells/μL are common and harmless. The lower ANC levels are driven by the Duffy null [Fy(a-b-)] phenotype, which is protective against malaria and seen in 80% to 100% of those of sub-Saharan African ancestry and <1% of those of European descent. Benign ethnic neutropenia is clinically insignifica

The Duffy blood group plays a key role in Plasmodium knowlesi and Plasmodium vivax invasion into human erythrocytes. The geographical distribution of the Duffy alleles differs between regions with the FY*A allele having high frequencies in many Asian populations, the FY*B allele is found predominately in European populations and the FY*Bes allele found predominantly in African regions. A previous study in Peninsular Malaysia indicated high homogeneity of the dominant FY*A/FY*A genotype. However, the distribution of the Duffy genotypes in Malaysian Borneo is currently unknown. In the present st

Examination of blood groups, plasma proteins and red cell enzyme types (23 loci), in a sample of 145 Bhils, a tribal group of Madhya Pradesh, Central India, demonstrates their genetic uniqueness. They differ in a number of systems from the nearby nontribal groups both of Hindus and Muslims. The results suggest that the Bhil frequencies include vestiges of the ancestral genepool of a more widespread aboriginal population whose influence is detectable in the gene frequencies of some other populations in India.

We report a B Rh negative patient undergoing total pelvic exenteration, who received both ABO and Rh incompatible packed red blood cells in an emergency situation. After this experience, we revised the manual of emergency blood transfusion. We defined level of severity to share information with surgeon, nurses, anesthesiologists and the member of the blood center. We changed anesthesia information management system for showing blood type including Duffy blood group system and checking out whether we can transfuse Rh positive blood to Rh negative patient in an emergency situation at the timeout

Plasmodium knowlesi merozoites invade erythrocytes by a sequence of events: attachment, widespread deformation of the erythrocyte membrane, endocytosis, and resealing of the membrane and vesicle. The possible mechanisms by which these events occur are discussed. In particular, there is a detailed discussion of the role of the Duffy blood group system in invasion.
