Evaluation of Chemotherapy-induced Dysgeusia in Patients With Gastrointestinal Cancer: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Dysgeusia, one of the adverse effects of cancer chemotherapy, and anorexia due to taste disorder can significantly impair the quality of life of patients. However, an evaluation method for dysgeusia has not yet been established. The present prospective study aimed to utilize a combination of subjective and objective assessment methods to evaluate dysgeusia in patients with gastrointestinal cancer initiating chemotherapy, to determine chemotherapeutic drugs and regimens causing dysgeusia, and to assess whether dysgeusia was associated with zinc deficiency. PATIENTS AND METHODS:

Anosmia (smell failure) and dysgeusia (taste distortion) in COVID-19: it is genetic.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a very contagious respiratory illness with has affected millions of individuals worldwide. In addition to the well-known symptoms of any respiratory virus, COVID-19 can present with anosmia (failure to smell) and dysgeusia (distortion of the sense of taste). It appears to be a genetic link to the biological mechanisms underlying COVID-19-related anosmia and dysgeusia. Significant locus in the vicinity of the UGT2A1 and UGT2A2 genes are currently considered as the main culprit of the symptoms. However, more studies are needed to delineate a clear pathophysiology.Communi

Self-reported anosmia and dysgeusia as key symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019.

OBJECTIVES: To slow down the transmission of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it is important to identify specific symptoms for effective screening. While anosmia/hyposmia and dysgeusia/ageusia have been identified as highly prevalent symptoms, there are wide geographic variations, necessitating the regional evaluation of the prevalence of the symptoms. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed to evaluate the self-reported symptoms among adults (over 18 years old) who underwent COVID-19 tests at an ambulatory assessment centre. We identified 1,345 patients (102 positive and 1,243 ne

Peculiar Unpleasant Dysgeusia as the Sole Initial Symptom of Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

Dysgeusia is rare in Guillain-Barré syndrome, particularly as the initial symptom. We herein report the case of a 59-year-old woman who presented with only dysgeusia as the initial symptom of Guillain-Barré syndrome, followed by gradually worsening muscle weakness and bilateral sensory disturbances in the extremities. Her dysgeusia was so unpleasant that she could not eat anything, so she received nasogastric tube feeding without dysphasia. We speculate that the dysgeusia in our patient was mainly caused by inflammation of the chorda tympani nerves. Guillain-Barré syndrome should be considered

Awareness of dysgeusia and gustatory tests in patients undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer.

PURPOSE: We analyzed the prevalence of gustatory test abnormalities in breast cancer (BC) patients undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS: We enrolled 43 BC patients undergoing chemotherapy and 38 BC patients who had never undergone chemotherapy (control group). Two gustatory tests were conducted: an instillation method examining the threshold for four basic taste stimuli and an electrogustometry method measuring the threshold for perception with electric stimulation at the front two-thirds of the tongue (cranial nerve VII) and at the back third of the tongue (cranial nerve IX). The results of the

Sensory Ataxic Guillain-Barré Syndrome with Dysgeusia after mRNA COVID-19 Vaccination.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has occasionally occurred in people who have received coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines. Dysgeusia is rare symptom of GBS. We herein report a rare case of sensory ataxic GBS with dysgeusia just after the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. Although autoantibodies against glycolipids were not detected, immunotherapy with intravenous immunoglobulin and methylprednisolone pulse therapy effectively ameliorated the symptoms. Our report suggests that the COVID-19 vaccine may induce various clinical subtypes of GBS, including a rare variant wi

Parosmia and dysgeusia after intravenous propofol-based general anesthesia: A case report.

Various drugs, including anesthetic agents, can cause parosmia in the perioperative period. There are reported cases of patients with alterations of smell and taste due to local anesthetics, nerve damage, or as a side effect of general anesthesia. We present a case of a 58-year-old male who developed parosmia and dysgeusia in the postoperative period after radical nephrectomy and inferior vena cava thrombectomy. The anesthetics used were fentanyl and propofol for general anesthesia and ropivacaine for epidural analgesia. Clinical examination did not reveal any pathology.

Successful treatment of dysgeusia after middle-ear surgery with amitriptyline: Case report.

INTRODUCTION: The chorda tympani branches off of the facial nerve within the petrous portion of the temporal bone, and is responsible for controlling the taste in the anterior two-thirds of the tongue on each side. Due to its location, it is commonly injured during middle-ear surgery resulting in dysgeusia. METHOD: A case of a 59-year-old male had recurrent otitis media resulting in tympanic membrane perforation. Patient subsequently underwent lateral graft tympanoplasty. Shortly after surgery patient reported onset of dysgeusia consisting of metallic taste at the tip of the tongue and salty

Weight loss and dysgeusia in relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma patients treated with talquetamab.

Talquetamab is an approved therapy for relapsed multiple myeloma. This study examined dysgeusia and weight loss occurrences, alongside investigating symptom reversibility post-treatment cessation. Dysgeusia was prevalent, persisting in 15% of patients. On average, patients lost 6% of their weight during treatment, with weight loss persisting in about half of the patients post-discontinuation. Weight loss and dysgeusia are important adverse events to consider while on talquetamab treatment. Extending dose intervals can potentially prevent such adverse events and should be studied in future pros

Managing Severe Dysgeusia and Dysosmia in Lung Cancer Patients: A Systematic Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer (LC) is highly prevalent worldwide, with elevated mortality. In this population, taste and smell alterations (TSAs) are frequent but overlooked symptoms. The absence of effective therapeutic strategies and evidence-based guidelines constrain TSAs' early recognition, prevention and treatment (Tx), promoting cancer-related malnutrition and jeopardizing survival outcomes and quality of life. OBJECTIVES: To systematically review the literature on TSAs in LC patients, understand the physiopathology, identify potential preventive and Tx strategies and to further encourage

Dysgeusia, gustatory sweating, and crocodile tears syndrome induced by a cerebellopontine angle meningioma.

Facial nerve involvement in cerebellopontine angle tumors, both during their development and after excision, may be expressed in irreversible dysfunction of the parasympathetic pathways. The exact location of the lesion along the efferent nerve fibers can be established through evaluation of the functional level of those organs supplied by the cholinergic motor secretory components. This report deals with a female patient in whom peripheral facial palsy developed shortly after removal of a right cerebellopontine angle meningioma. She had slight facial asymmetry and deafness in the right ear an

Prevalence of Dysgeusia in Head and Neck Cancer Patients: A Meta-Analysis and Moderator Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dysgeusia is a frequent yet underrecognised complication among head and neck cancer (HNC) patients, adversely affecting nutritional intake, psychological well-being and quality of life. Accurate prevalence estimates are essential to guide supportive care interventions. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis aimed to determine the global pooled prevalence of dysgeusia in HNC patients and identify potential moderators influencing prevalence estimates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted following MOOSE and PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Online databases were

A Lithium-Containing Hydrogel for Topical Prevention of Radiation-Induced Oral Mucositis and Dysgeusia.

Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) and taste dysfunction (dysgeusia) are common complications of radiotherapy in cancer patients. Current clinical interventions for RIOM mainly focus on symptom alleviation but with limited efficacy and nonevidenced taste protection. Our previous study showed that systemic administration of lithium (a Wnt agonist) ameliorated radiation-induced oral mucositis and dysgeusia by promoting basal cell proliferation and taste bud renewal. However, the potential cytotoxicity of systemic administration of lithium necessitates topical application. In this study, a p

[A case of left dysgeusia due to hemorrhage near the left superior cerebellar peduncle].

We report a rare case with unilateral dysgeusia due to cerebrovascular disease. A 45-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with a sudden onset of dysesthesia in the right face and upper and lower limbs. A CT scan revealed a left pontine hemorrhage. A day after onset, the patient became aware of unilateral dysgeusia. Electrogustometry showed significantly higher thresholds in the left chorda tympani nerve and glossopharyngeal nerve compared to the right nerves. We diagnosed the hemorrhage caused unilateral dysgeusia. Although dysesthesia in the right face and upper and lower limbs disappear

Dosiomic-based prediction of dysgeusia in head & neck cancer patients treated with radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: To investigate the potential of dosiomics in predicting radiotherapy-induced taste distortion (dysgeusia) in head & neck (H&N) cancer. METHODS: A cohort of 80 H&N cancer patients treated with radical or adjuvant radiotherapy and with a follow-up of at least 24 months was enrolled. Treatment information, as well as tobacco and alcohol consumption were also collected. The whole tongue was manually delineated on the planning CT and mapped to the dose map retrieved from the treatment planning system. For every patient, 6 regions of the tongue were examined; for each of them, 145 dosiomic

Acupuncture in chemotherapy-induced dysgeusia (AcuDysg): study protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Dysgeusia is a common side effect of chemotherapy in patients with cancer, but to date, there is no effective treatment. Many patients with cancer request complementary medicine treatment in addition to their cancer treatments, and acupuncture is highly accepted for patients with cancer; however, evidence regarding the effectiveness of acupuncture for dysgeusia is scarce. The study investigates the effectiveness of an additional dysgeusia-specific acupuncture plus self-acupressure intervention compared with supportive acupuncture plus self-acupressure intervention alone for chemot

Attributes of dysgeusia and anosmia of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in hospitalized patients.

OBJECTIVES: While chemosensory dysfunctions, dysgeusia and anosmia/hyposmia, are recognized as distinctive symptoms of COVID-19, their temporality of presentation and association with the patient age, gender, disease severity, and comorbidities has been sparsely studied. Hence, we evaluated the latter associations of chemosensory dysfunction, in hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Information on chemosensory dysfunction and history of chronic systemic comorbidities, if any, was obtained from 149 COVID-19 patients in an infectious disease ho
