The validity and clinical utility of night eating syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To review the empirical literature for evidence in support of inclusion of Night Eating Syndrome (NES) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. METHOD: Based on a literature search using PubMed, 47 empirical studies of NES were identified. RESULTS: The literature reflects use of varying definitions; progress has been made toward reliable measurement of night eating symptoms; evidence regarding a differentiation of NES from "normalcy" or from other eating disorders is based largely on samples of convenience; only one controlled treatment st

The crying baby.

BACKGROUND: Up to 20% of parents report a problem with their infant crying in the first 3 months of life. The majority of babies have no organic cause of crying and most crying subsides by 3-4 months. OBJECTIVE: This article describes the management of persistent crying in the first 3 months of life. DISCUSSION: Management includes exclusion of medical causes and ensuring the baby is adequately rested and fed. Unexplained episodes of crying can be managed by: carrying the baby, going for a walk with baby in the pram, giving baby a deep, warm bath, or playing white noise or environmental soun

[Correlation between eating disorders and sleep disturbances].

Anorectics and bulimics often complain sleep onset insomnia and disrupted sleep. During awakenings bulimics can have binges. Conversely, eating disorders can be a clinical expression of a concomitantly occurring sleep disorder. Two clinical entities have been recently described: the Night Eating Syndrome (NES) and the Sleep Related Eating Disorders. The main goal of this literature review was to better characterize the relationships between eating disorders and sleep disturbances. No specific EEG sleep pattern emerges in anorectic and bulimic patients. However, all studies include several meth

[Sleep-related breathing disorders in children and teenagers: diagnosis, consequences and comorbidities].

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a frequent sleep-related breathing disorder in children with a prevalence of approximately 3% between the ages of 3 and 8. Its origin is multifactorial (hypertrophy of pharyngeal soft tissues, narrowing of the bone airways, damage to the neuromuscular tone). The symptoms and clinical signs to look for during the day and at night are directly related to upper airway (UA) obstruction or poor sleep quality. After a complete anamnestic and clinical evaluation, including nasofibroscopy, the ENT specialist will refer to an adeno-amygdalectomy or night reco

Pediatric sleep disorders: exploratory modulation of their relationships.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study explores relationships between clinically encountered sleep problems in children. DESIGN: The Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) (Bruni et al 1996), which screens 26 sleep problems and results in 6 sleep disorder-subscales, was used as core in a larger health-behavior questionnaire (HBQ). PARTICIPANTS: Caregivers of 3045 6- to 12-year-olds filled out the HBQ. INTERVENTIONS: N/A. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: 21 SDSC-items plus 15 new sleep items were selected. Via structural equation modelling we explored (1) relations within and between disorder-subscales

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-concussion Syndrome: Treatment and Related Sequela for Persistent Symptomatic Disease.

Sport-related concussion typically resolves within a few weeks of the injury; however, persistent symptoms have been reported to occur in 10% to 15% of concussions. These ongoing symptoms can cause significant disability and be frustrating for the patient and family. In addition, factors other than brain injury can cause complications for these patients, such as adjustment disorder or exacerbation of preexisting conditions such as depression or migraine. Individuals with prolonged symptoms of concussion may be classified as having post-concussion syndrome. A careful and thoughtful evaluation i

Heavy Hitters, Light Sleepers: Collision Frequency and Locomotor Load on Sleep Architecture in Professional Rugby Union Players.

To assess whether certain players are more vulnerable to postmatch sleep disturbances by examining the relationship between match demands-collision frequency and locomotor load-and sleep in professional male rugby union players. A linear mixed-effects regression examined the relationship between match variables and sleep in 13 rugby players across three matches. Match variables included six physical demand variables derived from video analysis and GPS data (collision frequency, total distance, high-speed distance, sprint distance, acceleration load and fast acceleration count) and two contextu

Thermoregulation, scratch, itch and sleep deficits in children with eczema.

Successful sleep onset and maintenance is associated with a reduction in core temperature, facilitated by heat loss at the distal periphery. Problems with initiating and maintaining sleep in children with eczema may relate to impaired thermoregulatory mechanisms, which also contribute to itching and scratching. Our hypothesis was that nocturnal distal skin temperature in eczematous children would be lower than controls, and would also be related to poor sleep quality. We compared overnight polysomnography and distal (finger) and proximal (clavicle) skin temperature in 18 children with eczema a

Sleep-related non epileptic motor disorders.

Sleep-related non epileptic motor disorders represent a frequent but often neglected or trivialized source of neurological disability. In recent decades, the widespread adoption of videopolygraphic techniques has better characterized already known nosographic entities and described a bewildering variety of previously unrecognized clinical entities (such as REM sleep behaviour disorder, sleep-related eating disorder, benign neonatal sleep myoclonus, facio-mandibular myoclonus during sleep, fragmentary hypnic myoclonus, propriospinal myoclonus at the wake-sleep transition, rhythmic feet movement

Sleep complaints in panic disorder patients.

Patients with anxiety disorders often report difficulty sleeping. The present study assesses the prevalence of sleep complaints in panic disorder (PD) patients, compares them with sleep complaints in a normal population, and investigates the role of comorbid depression and nocturnal panic attacks in sleep complaints in the PD patients. Seventy PD patients and 70 healthy controls were asked about their subjective sleep characteristics by means of the Sleep-Wake Experience List, which assesses sleep/arousal complaints over a 24-hour period. Sixty-seven percent of the PD patients reported sleep c

Assessment and treatment at a pain clinic: A one-year follow-up of patients with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pain is one of the most common reasons for patients to seek primary health care. Pain relief is likely to be achieved for patients suffering from acute pain, but for individuals with chronic pain it is more likely that the condition will persist. These patients have the option of being referred to specialised pain clinics. However, the complexity surrounding chronic pain patients is not well studied in these settings. This study aimed to describe patients with chronic pain referred to a pain clinic by using the information submitted during their first visit and one year la

Gender Difference in Associations Between Telomere Length and Risk Factors in Patients With Stroke.

Multiple risk factors of stroke are associated with telomere length shortening. Although leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is shorter in patients with stroke, the heterogeneity is high. Risk factors may be differentially associated with LTL in male and female patients contributing to the heterogeneity. However, the gender difference in associations between LTL and risk factors in stroke patients has not been investigated. In this study, we investigated the gender difference in associations between LTL and risk factors in 312 stroke patients. Real-time quantitative PCR was used to determine relat

Long-term neuropsychiatric consequences of aseptic meningitis in adult patients.

Aseptic meningitis is considered a benign and self-limiting clinical condition. In contrast to viral encephalitis and bacterial meningitis, the prognosis is usually good. The existing literature is scarce on the potential long-term neuropsychiatric consequences of aseptic meningitis. Previous studies have primarily been retrospective and differences in methodologies make it difficult to draw conclusions regarding the prevalence and nature of neuropsychiatric manifestations. However, studies have reported decreased psychomotor speed and impaired executive and visuo-constructive functions follow

[CME: Jet Lag Jetlag].

CME: Jet Lag Jetlag Abstract. Crossing several time zones by air travel leads to a temporary desynchronization of the internal clock with the external light/dark cycle. In the following jet lag occurs typically including difficulties falling asleep or waking up early as well as day-time sleepiness and significant reduction of wellbeing and fitness. To provide optimal medical advice, it is necessary to understand the human circadian rhythm and sleep-wake regulation. In consideration with additional information on travel plans, an approach to alleviate jet lag symptoms can be developed. This art
